3 1. WELCOME RAMADAN The blessed month of Ramadan is here. It is the 9 th month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) during this month. Fasting means to not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Fasting teaches us to be patient and control ourselves. While fasting we should also avoid things God does not like. We should not hurt anyone or speak any evil. If anyone tries to hurt you or argue with you, do not argue back but just say I am fasting, I am fasting. During this month, we should recite the Holy Qur an, we must help the poor and be kind and generous to them. All Muslims should try to give up bad habits during Ramadan and try to become better Muslims. Ramadan is a time to spend with family and friends by breaking the fast and sharing the evening meal together. At the end of Ramadan there is a big festival called Eid-ul-Fitr. This is a big celebration where all the Muslims wear nice clothes and give lovely presents and gifts to the children. They must also give money to charity for the poor so they can celebrate too. 2
4 2. A HADITH The Messenger of Allah (swt) said: Islam is built on five (pillars): 1) The testimony that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; 2) Establishing prayer; 3) Zakah, giving charity to the porr and needy; 4) Fasting in Ramadan; 5) Hajj - pilgrimage to the House (the Ka bah). (Bukhari and Muslim) When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of hell are closed and the devils are chained. (Bukhari and Muslim) Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving then times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, 'Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.' for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk." [Imam Bukhari] 3

My money is right here with me and there are lots of donkeys in that market replied the man. His friend only shrugged and didn t say anything more. The man began walking towards the market. On the way, a thief stole his money bag and he didn t find out until he had reached the market. All of a sudden, he realized that his money was gone, and he had no choice but to go back home.
