1 Sunday 20 May 2018 The Gospel Jesus said, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Jn 14: Prayer Spirit of the Living God, breathe your life into our souls and our parishes. Make us a fire of love burning brightly for all those in need of your peace and healing. Drive us out of our hiding places, and send us forth to renew the face of the Earth. Amen! And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2: 1-21

2 Light from the Word Pentecost The Catechism Pentecost is being awakened to the knowledge that the Spirit of God dwells within you. Right from the beginning God has always existed and will eternally be. From the commencement of Creation we read, In the beginning when God created... darkness covered the face of the deep, while the Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters (Gen 1:1-2). Then God created humans, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Gen 2:7). This breath of life, this Spirit of God is within us, is here, is everywhere and Pentecost is an awakening to God s presence among us. In today s Gospel we read that the Spirit of truth, the Advocate, abides with you, and he will be in you (Jn 14:17) and again Jesus says, I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you (Jn 14:20). Pentecost can happen at any time and in any place. It is the calling to recognise we are God s and God is ours. The Holy Spirit has been given to us humans who are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26) and our yearning and restlessness will cease only when we can rest in God. The Holy Spirit beckons within us. So hear the words of the Holy Spirit that whisper deep in you, Be still and know that I am God (Ps 46:10). Amen Pentecost is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in fulfillment of Jesus promise Was there any symbolic meaning to the manifestation of the wind and the tongues of fire? The wind recalls the Spirit of God moving over the waters at the creation of the world (Genesis 1:1-2). The manifestation of the Holy Spirit through the strong, driving wind indicates that a new creation is taking place: the renewal of humanity in God s Holy Spirit. The tongues of fire denote the Presence of God, purification, and Judgment. Traditional catechesis saw the tongues of fire as signifying the sacredness and divine (God-given) authority of the preaching and teaching of the Apostles, by whose words, fervour, and witness, and example all people were to be converted to the knowledge, love, and service to God. The Servant s Word Sr Margaret Ghosn MSHF I will not leave you orphaned. This Sunday marks the commencement of a new season in our Maronite Church, the Season of Pentecost. This is a special time in our Church and the universal Church, as it celebrates the anniversary of the first Church and the descent of the Holy Spirit, on Mary and the Apostles, in the Upper Room. Pentecost is a time of great joy in the fulfilment of the promise of Christ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. (Jn 14:16) This Paraclete is the Holy Spirit, proclaimed in our Creed as the giver of life. The sending of the Holy Spirit ensures that we are not left orphaned but rather we become adopted children of the Father and brothers and sisters of Jesus. This Paraclete grants us a sense of belonging; we become a Church united in faith, hope and love; we become the voice of God, the voice of righteousness, mercy and forgiveness in our world; we become beacons of love and hope to the unloved and hopeless. This special Feast of Pentecost will be celebrated in a special Maronite way with the Rite of Adoration of Pentecost. During this special rite, the clergy together with the faithful will adore three times, the Holy Trinity. The first adoration will be to the Father, the Creator. The second will be in adoration of the Son, through whom all things were made. The final adoration will be to the Holy Spirit, the giver of life. The blessing of the water that becomes holy and the sprinkling of this water will also follow this. The sprinkling over the heads of the faithful is a reminder of our baptism and the baptismal promise we make. This coming Tuesday, 22nd May, is the Feast of St Rita and I invite all parishioners to join us in prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord for giving us the example of St Rita and seeking her intercession. Also on the 26th May we will be celebrating a Mass in honour of His Excellency Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay s 25th Anniversary to the Priesthood and 5th Anniversary of his Episcopate. Furthermore, there will be a procession for the end of May, the month of Mary and this will also be held on the 26th May at 5pm. I encourage all our faithful parishioners to attend these special and commemorative celebrations and I pray that our lives always reflect and glorify the Holy Trinity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our stewardship committee for their continued dedication and work within our parish and to all committees who are working tirelessly to ensure our parish is vibrant and alive in the love of Christ. 3 Article of the Week Keeping the Commandments of Christ When we consider the Commandments of Christ, in particular, the call to love one another as He has loved us, it is not uncommon that one starts to feel that Our Lord is asking us to love beyond ourselves. Well, the truth is, this is precisely what He is asking of us! That s because the love that Christ spoke of was like no other love preached before. Christ s love was a love to death, literally! Now we may not all be called to a red martyrdom in our lifetime but we are definitely called to a white martyrdom in our day to day dealings with one another. Firstly, Our Lord s command is a call to action. Because love is not just a feeling. It is an act of the will for the good of another. We can be sure that dying on the cross would not have felt good! Christ s love is one that is unconditional and sacrificial. It includes everybody from family to friends to work colleagues and most importantly, even our enemies. Our Lord commands us to love as He loved, but as difficult as this is, we should never lose heart. Why? Because Our Lord will never ask of us something that He Himself has not done, better still, something that He won t give us the grace to do. Finally, this love of Christ is the essential mark of true Christianity, which He predicted will be the sign of our discipleship to Him. So let us not merely parade our Christianity by wearing our crosses, let us indeed proclaim our Christianity by carrying our crosses. We can be sure as promised, that if we are to share in Christ s cross on earth, the cross of love, we will definitely share in Christ s crown in Heaven, the crown of glory. Matthew Semaan Fersen Corner Family Corner - The Spirit Comes Last Saturday, the Fersen Al Adra from across Sydney met up at St Charbel's Parish for Fersen Day. Fersen Day is an annual event where we all get together to learn and socialise. This year's theme was: "Fulfilling God's Will". We had the opportunity to meet new people who make the same promises as us and learn new things from them. One of our tasks was to show how we can fulfill God's Holy Will in our daily lives and one of our Fersen children prepared the following for the day: "To show love and kindness, one has to do simple acts. For example, at school I help the teachers, students and my buddy. At home I help my mum clean the house, empty the dishwasher, help with the laundry and help cook. At Fersen I listen to the teachers and I learn how to perform acts of charity. Also if you see people you don't know, for example the elderly, you can hold their shopping bags, have a little chat with them or simply just smile at them. Doing an act of charity is as simple as that." - Clara Saab, Year 6 It was truly a day to remember and we look forward to it being bigger and better next year! Eliana Gerges The Pentecost event is a time when we reflect on and remember the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is also a time of increased awareness and appreciation of our role in our family. As a family, make a list of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit which are evident in the lives of each member of your family. Decorate and display the list in your home as a reminder of God s generous gifts to us. Try making a Spirit Flame. One of the most important aspects of the Holy Spirit is that it first appeared above each Apostle as a tongue of fire. Create a Spirit Flame craft by drawing a small heart shape in a larger heart onto cardboard. Ask your children to write or draw in the smaller heart one gift they are to other people e.g. I can share. Then decorate the heart in red and orange. These colours can make the heart look like fire. The fire heart can then be hung with a piece of ribbon. Finally, keep in mind St. Augustine s prayer to the Holy Spirit: Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, That my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, That my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, That I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, To defend all that is holy. Guard me, then O Holy Spirit, That I always may be holy. Rita Saade

7 حين كان ال ا رب يسوع يمن تالميذه س لطان ا كي يجعلوا الناس يولدون في اهلل من جديد كان يقول لهم: "اذه بوا وت لم ذوا ج ميع األ م م وع م دوهم ب اس م اآلب وا لب ن والر وح الق د س". بالفعل كان ال ا رب قد وع د بأن ي فيض روحه في األزمنة األخيرة كما جاء على لسان ال ا نبي يوئيل: "سي كون ب عد هذه أ ن ي أ فيض روحي على ك ل ب ش ر في ت ن ب أ بنوكم وب نات كم..."كذلك وعد ر ا بنا الم أرة السامرية بأن ا ي" الاذي يعطيه لن "يعطش الى األبد" ولن يعود بحاجة من يشرب من "الماء الح إلى أن يشرب ماء ي ست قى بعناء وأضاف ال ا رب قائال : "بل الماء ال ذي أ عط يه إ ي اه يصير فيه ع ين ماء ي تف ج ر ح ياة أ ب دي ة". ما قصده ال ا رب هو أن يستطيع اإلنسان أن يشرب ما اخذه ال ا رب يسوع بذاته من اآلب وهو يعطيه بدوره الى الذين ي قيمون فيه بإرساله الر وح القدس على ا لرض كلاها. هذا الر وح هو بالضبط الذي حل على ال ا رب يسوع: "روح الح كم ة والف ه م روح الم شور ة والق و ة روح المعرفة وت قوى الر ا ب". وبدوره لقد أعطى الر ا ب هذا الر وح للكنيسة حين أرسل من السماء ال ا روح الم ؤ ي د إلى كل األرض. أل ا ن الر ا ب سلام الى الر وح القدس م لك ه الخاص أي اإلنسان الذي كان قد "وق ع ب أ يدي الل صوص". غير أن قلب ال ا رب أرى حال اإلنسان "فأ شف ق عل يه ود نا منه وض م د ج ارح ه" ثم "أ خر ج دينار ي ن" عليهما صورة الم لك وذلك لكي بعد حصولنا بواسطة ال ا روح على "الصورة والكتابة" الاتين هما لآلب وا لبن نجعل هذه القطعة من المال تعطي ثمارها قطعة قد س لام ت إلينا كي نعيدها الى الر ا ب وقد أثمرت وتكاثرت. كلمة الخادم تأم ل في اإلنجيل الحقيقة المحر رة والجامعة - لماذا هذه الوثيقة تشكر كنيستنا المارون ا ية اهلل على انتشار اإليمان وا للت ازم الديني بين أبنائها وبناتها وعلى ازدياد اهتمامهم ورغبتهم الصادقة بالتع ا رف على تعليم الكنيسة والمواضيع الالهوت ا ية. وتث ا من الجهود الكبيرة التي يقوم بها الرعاة واآلباء والالاهوت ا يون بالتعاون مع الهيئات الكنس ا ية كالحركات والمنظامات ال ا رسول ا ية بهدف تثقيف المؤمنين ومنحهم مجا ل للتع ا مق في محتوى اإليمان ولعيش حياتهم الروح ا ية بشكل أفضل. ولكن ل يخفى على أحد أ ا ن تعليم الكنيسة بما فيه من مضمون لهوتي يحتاج الى فهم سليم ويصعب أحيان ا التعبير عنه بصورة دقيقة م ا ما يؤادي إلى عدم فهم بعض العبا ارت وسوء استعمال أخرى. هذا ا ي ما يحصل م ا رات عديدة وينتشر بشكل ملحوظ عبر وسائل التواصل ا لجتماع وفي عظات وارشادات وتعاليم وتعليقات. م ا ما يثير بعض الشكوك والتساؤ لت وا لحتجاجات لدى المؤمنين ويدفعهم إلى التو ا جه إلى السلطة الكنس ا ية المسؤولة عن ص ا حة التعليم طالبين منها إيضاح ما فيه التباس وشرح بعض الحقائق الصعبة ووضع حاد للتجاو ازت. بل ارح بعضهم يراد من خالل مواقع التاواصل ا لجتماعي م ا ما خلق بلبلة وشكوك ا في صفوف المؤمنين. لذلك أرى آباء سينودس أساقفة الكنيسة البطريرك ا ية المارون ا ية ضرورة إصدار وثيقة لهوت ا ية تذ اكر اإلكليروس والمؤمنين والمؤمنات بمعنى مضمون الحقائق الواردة في تعليم الكنيسة الكاثوليك ا ية وتشرح بعض التعابير الملتبسة من أجل حماية ص ا حة التعليم وتثقيف اإليمان. فأنشأنا لجنة أسقف ا ية إلعداد مشروع هذه الوثيقة. ومن بعد اإلد لء بالمالحظات عليها واألخذ بالمقترحات نصدرها اليوم لتكون وثيقة رسم ا ية يلتزم بها أبناء وبنات كنيستنا المارون ا ية إكليروس ا وعلماني ين. من الرسالة العامة السابعة للبطريرك الماروني بشارة الراعي "لن أترككم يتامى" في هذا األحد يبدأ زمن جديد في كنيستنا المارونية زمن العنصرة. إنه زمن مم ا يز في كنيستنا والكنيسة الجامعة ففيه نحتفل بو لدة الكنيسة األولى وحلول الروح القدس على مريم العذ ارء والتالميذ في العلية. العنصرة هو زمن الفرح العظيم بإتمام وعد المسي : "وأنا أسأل اآلب فيعطيكم برقليطا آخر مؤيدا يكون معكم إلى األبد" )يو ٤١ : ٤١(. هذا البرقليط هو الروح القدس المعل ن في قانون اإليمان على أنه "الرب المحيي". إرسال الروح القدس يضمن عدم تركنا يتامى لنصب أو لدا تبناهم اآلب واخوة وأخوات ليسوع. يعطينا هذا البرقليط ح ا سا با لنتماء فنصير كنيسة متحدة باإليمان والرجاء والح ا ب ونكون صوت اهلل صوت الحق والرحمة والمغفرة في عالمنا ونصب منائر ح ا ب ورجاء للذين ل يح ا بهم أحد واليائسين. سيتم ا لحتفال بعيد العنصرة على الطريقة المارونية المم ا يزة وهي رتبة السجود الخاصة بالعنصرة. خالل هذه الرتبة الخاصة يقوم الكهنة و المؤمنون معا بالسجود ثالث م ارت للثالوث األقدس. السجدة األولى لآلب الخالق. السجدة الثانية لالبن الذي به كان كل شيء. السجدة األخيرة للروح القدس المحيي. يتبع ذلك تبريك الماء ليصب مقدسا ومن ثم راشه. رش الماء فوق رؤوس المؤمنين تذكير بمعموديتنا والوعد الذي نقطعه عند العمادة. هذا الثالثاء ٥٥ أيار عيد القديسة ريتا. أدعو جميع أبناء وبنات الرعية لمشاركتنا صالة الشكر للرب إلعطائنا القديسة ريتا مثا ل ولطلب شفاعتها. وفي ٥١ أيار سوف نحتفل بالقداس اإللهي على نية سيادة المط ارن أنطوان شربل طربيه في الذكرى الخامسة والعشرين لسيامته كاهنا والذكرى السنوية الخامسة لتنصيبه أسقفا. وفي التاريخ ذاته أي 62 أيار الساعة 5 مساء سيقام زياح الختام للشهر المريمي. أشجع جميع المؤمنين على المشاركة في هذين ا لحتفالي ن المم ا يزي ن وأسأل اهلل أن تعكس حياتنا دائما الثالوث األقدس وتمجده. أود أن أغتنم هذه الفرصة ألشكر لجنة الوقف لتفانيها المستمر وعملها الدؤوب في رعيتنا وألشكر كل اللجان التي تعمل بال كلل لجعل رعيتنا نابضة بالحياة حبا بالمسي. الخوري طوني سركيس
