Revealed in Mecca Consist of 34 verses LESSONS FROM LUQMAN Br. Wael Ibrahim How can we implement the lessons in our daily lives?
The Chapter of Child Education The chapter is about Luqman s education and advices to his son. The advices given conveys some wonderful methods to raise up children it covers up religious and worldly advices. Luqman was not a prophet according to almost all scholars. Yet he was honored in the Qur an by having a whole chapter after his name. WHY?
Every Child must know the following... Tawheed Honoring one s parents The importance of worship and being positive in life Understanding the reality of the world Good behavior and manners Planning one s life
HOMEWORK My buddy Qur an teacher 34 verses that covers up all what we mentioned earlier, must be taught, memorized and acted upon We will assign some brothers and sisters to teach those who can t read the Qur an in Arabic yet on how to memorize this chapter. WHO CAN VOLUNTEER FOR THIS NOBLE CAUSE?
1. TAWHEED 1 st and most important advice The theme of the entire chapter revolves around the concept of Allah & His monotheistic nature. And this is the first principle in which our children should be taught. To believe in the absolute Oneness of Allah SWT and to stay away from all acts of Shirk.
Not to associate partners with Allah. He begins by a severe warning not to commit Shirk See how he talked to him? A way of INSTRUCTION/ ADVICE Addressed him with the term O MY SON و إ ذ ق ال ل ق م ان لا ب ن ه و ه و ي ع ظ ه ي ا ب ن ي لا ت ش ر ك ب الل ه إ ن الش ر ك ل ظ ل م ع ظ يم [٣۳١۱:١۱٣۳] And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: "O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed. Q. 31:13
Practicality in advice ي ا ب ن ي إ ن ه ا إ ن ت ك م ث ق ال ح ب ة م ن خ ر د ل ف ت ك ن ف ي ص خ ر ة أ و ف ي الس م او ات أ و ف ي الا ر ض ي ا ت ب ه ا الل ه إ ن الل ه ل ط يف خ ب ير [٣۳١۱:١۱٦] O my son! surely if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard-seed, even though it is in (the heart of) rock, or (high above) in the heaven or (deep down) in the earth, Allah will bring it (to light); surely Allah is Knower of subtleties, Aware; Q.31:16 2 verses later he started to open up his mind to reality Verse 15 The advice is applicable to parents as well (adults) i.e. Allah is over watching you Take them out to show them Allah s creation Ask them later Who created this and that?
The Last Will Worshipping Allah Were you witnesses when death appeared before Jacob? Behold, he said to his sons: "What will you worship after me?" They said: "We shall worship your God and the God of your fathers, of Abraham, Isma'il and Isaac,- the one (True) Allah: Q. 2:133 Jacob s last will was to worship One True God only We should dedicate our life to teach them the concept of pure and One God; and die while reminding them of the same. ق ل إ ن ص لا ت ي و ن س ك ي و م ح ي اي و مم ات ي ل ل ه ر ب ال ع الم ين : Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds: Q. 6:162
2. Honoring Parents 2 nd command after worshipping Allah Our parents who have provided the most care for us. Sadly many have neglected their rights and treated them badly to teach our children how to respect parents is a must so that they can learn gratitude and to praise Allah for this great favor.
STAND UP How many times your mum changed your diapers? How many times your father carried you to the hospital? How many times their hearts were restless because of you? How many times you took money from them? How many times you made them cry? How many times they asked you not travel because they want you by their side? How many times you shouted at them? How many times they made Du a for you?
Second command after worshipping Allah Allah is instructing us and reminding us of what our mothers went through to give birth to us. Show gratitude to ME and to your PARENTS And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination. Q.31:14
Honor them and don t commit Shirk Even though we are commanded to be dutiful to our parents, but when it comes to the most serious of all sins, i.e. Shirk, we are told not to follow them
Don t follow them in SHIRK, BUT. Treat them kindly so long as you are alive Behave with them in the world kindly. Q. 31:15
3. Importance of worshipping Allah and being positive in life Worshipping the Creator is the main purpose in this life. So it is important to make them love prayers rather than make it a sort of punishment for them. Also, teaching them to be positive and active in life is essential in shaping their personality
Observe the order in the advices Prayer. Enjoin the good. Forbid the evil Patience ي ا ب ن ي أ ق م الص لا ة و أ م ر ب الم ع ر وف و ان ه ع ن الم نك ر و اص ب ر ع ل ى م ا أ ص اب ك إ ن ذ ل ك م ن ع ز م الا م ور [١۱٧۷:٣۳١۱] O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination. Q.31:17
What is child upbringing? Not only to secure child s food, drink, home, clothes, medicine etc.. Raise them up on worshipping Allah SWT Its not only to teach them how to pray, but to love prayers, love Allah, His prophet and the religion acceptable to Him. They must learn how to be positive in life. i.e. helping others, becomes leaders in the community, command what is right and forbid what is evil (i.e knowing what is Halal and Haram), guiding others to what which is pure and good, and of course the love to do Daw ah
4. Understanding the reality of this world The world is not going to be eternal for the parents, therefore we must teach our children to depend on themselves
Things to teach our children We should teach them not to be wasteful Not to always depend on their parents' money Don t assume that money can always secure your children future. It can destroy it also We should inform them that stability in this world is impossible. Life changes and they need to know how to cope with changes Teach them to be independents.
Luqman and the reality of the world. BE PATIENT و اص ب ر ع ل ى م ا أ ص اب ك إ ن ذ ل ك م ن ع ز م الا م ور and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination. Q.31:17 BE PROACTIVE و أ م ر ب الم ع ر وف و ان ه ع ن الم نك ر enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong Q. 31:17 NOTE: Being active and calling people to Allah require patience, because this path is full of difficulties and much problems.
5. Good behavior and manners One of the most important topics that we need to teach our children. Good behavior I have not been sent except to perfect manners Muhammad PBUH
Good manners و لا ت ص ع ر خ د ك ل لن اس و لا تم ش ف ي الا ر ض م ر ح ا إ ن الل ه لا ي ح ب ك ل م خ ت ال ف خ ور "And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not each arrogant boaster. Q.31:18 و اق ص د ف ي م ش ي ك و اغ ض ض م ن ص و ت ك إ ن أ نك ر الا ص و ات ل ص و ت الح م ير And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys. Q. 31:19
Good Manners It is very important to teach our children how to deal politely and courteously even in the smallest details. i.e. the way we walk, talk. We should humble ourselves and never show arrogance to anyone, we should not raise our voice more than necessary
6. Planning one s life One of the amazing teaching of Luqman in this chapter is that it covers even how one should plan his life
Having purpose in life 1. This verse completed the series of manners discussed in the chapter 2. It means that one should walk with dignity and without arrogance. 3. It also mean that we must have a purpose and goal in our life. In every step that we take we should know exactly where are we heading and why. What is the intention behind coming to this gathering or that. Teach your children to plan their life in accordance with the way that pleases Allah SWT. And be moderate in your pace, and lower your voice Q. 31:19 The word AQSID in Arabic also mean purpose, so the verse could read as: and have purpose in your walking
REFLECTIONS Let us ponder over how should parents instill a firm belief about Allah SWT in the hearts of their children.
Allah s power and knowledge Monotheism. The main theme of chapter 31. How can we draw our children s attention to Allah s magnificent creation. He has created the heavens without any pillars, that you see and has set on the earth firm mountains, lest it should shake with you. And He has scattered therein moving (living) creatures of all kinds. And We send down water (rain) from the sky, and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein.
Verse no. 10&11 are guidelines To use in order to teach children Tawheed. NOTE: Don t get board if your kids asked so many and endless questions. Strive to provide an answer without frustration. ه ذ ا خ ل ق الل ه ف ا ر ون ي م اذ ا خ ل ق ال ذ ين م ن د ون ه ب ل الظ الم ون ف ي ض لا ل م ب ين [٣۳١۱:١۱١۱] Such is the Creation of Allah: now show Me what is there that others besides Him have created: nay, but the Transgressors are in manifest error. Q. 31:11
Remarkable verse V.27 Using nature to instruct children and draw their attention to Allah s creation. Can you imagine after teaching them at home, then go out and show them the trees and oceans to instill the idea in their heart and mind و ل و أ ن م ا ف ي الا ر ض م ن ش ج ر ة أ ق لا م و ال ب ح ر يم د ه م ن ب ع د ه س ب ع ة أ ب ح ر م ا ن ف د ت ك ل م ات الل ه إ ن الل ه ع ز يز ح ك يم [٢۲٧۷:٣۳١۱] And if all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean (were ink), with seven oceans behind it to add to its (supply), yet would not the words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom. Q. 31:27
The Construction of the chapter TAWHED Moral teachings, worshipping Allah, planning TAWHED
Allah s knowledge of the Hour Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. Q. 31:34
We gave Luqman wisdom This chapter also focuses on the importance of wisdom. Alif, Lam, Meem. These are verses of the wise Book. Q. 31:1-2 The first time Luqman is mentioned in the chapter Allah says: و ل ق د آت ي ن ا ل ق م ان الح ك م ة أ ن اش ك ر ل ل ه و م ن ي ش ك ر ف ا ن م ا ي ش ك ر ل ن ف س ه و م ن ك ف ر ف ا ن الل ه غ ن ي ح م يد And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. Q. 31:12 It is as if the advice of Luqman was the result of his wisdom and experience in life.
Go practical 1. Take Luqman & his wisdom as an example for you to raise up your children. 2. Enough reading the Qur an with the intention of ONLY gaining the reward of reading it. Implement its meaning for greater benefits. 3. Go home and make notes of the points you learned. 4. Read the chapter this time while planning of implementing its structure in your daily life. 5. Make a Du a/supplication that may Allah SWT assist all of us in raising healthy Muslim children. Ameen THANK YOU J
