This year we have completed 66 years with our constitution. India's president takes the military salute during the parade. The U. S. President Barack Obama was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations The main attraction of Republic day is the special Republic Day parade taken out at Raj-path, in front of India gate. The event starts with India's Prime Minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, to remember soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our country. A procession starts from Vijay Chowk. All the 3 armed forces take part in the parade. There is a display of various tanks, big guns and other weapons of war. Military bands play different tunes. 6 Page 6 Lord, place Thy Hand on the yoke of those who fly, And guide them through the vast reaches of the sky. Bring them safely through their perilous flight, And may they ever look to Thee as their Guiding Light. Lord, protect the sailors who sail the treacherous seas. Calm the roiling waters that they may cruise with ease. May they always look to Thee as their Pilot for support, And with Thy guiding hand, bring them safely home to port. Lord, protect the soldier with Thy mighty sword midst the battle. Give him strength to press on despite the muskets' rattle. Hear his fervent supplication for Thy protection from all harm, And provide him with courage as he leans on Thy eternal arm. Lord, shield the brave marine as he storms the dangerous strand. Strengthen him with fortitude and provide Thy protective hand. Surround him with Thy angels as he strives to overcome the foe. Bring him safely through the conflict and upon him honor bestow. Lord, bless and provide comfort to his family, for they also serve. Until that day they are one again, give them hope and steady nerve. Hear their prayers O' Lord, for the safe return of heroes dear, And from their trust, hope and faith in Thee, may they never veer. 7 Page 7 A positive approach is essential for success in examination - 'Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you're right' - Henry Ford If you are disciplined and motivated, then it is easier to achieve your goals. Decide when are you most productive - morning, afternoon, or evening? It will help you study the difficult topics more easily as you can focus more. Start with a good night time routine. Relax your body and mind by doing meditation. The key to being positive and managing negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, feeling the pressure during examination is to "fuel" yourself up. Do things you like doing, which gives you happiness. The best advice to students is not to make big changes in their lifestyle just before exams e.g. giving up coffee, change your diet. It can adversely affect them mentally and physically. It is important to note that only studying does not decide that one can score good marks in exams. Examinations create anxiety, but there are different ways to deal with stress and become more confident for the exam day. Students, especially those who are going to sit for the class XII examinations shortly, must develop a positive approach to overcome exam phobia' which might put a negative effect on overall performance. Students must have faith and trust in themselves, so that they can achieve their goals. Examinations may be a burden when you are not prepared well, hence, you may panic; the key is to study the subjects one by one, stay optimistic, be focussed and diligent. Hence, when we make the first step towards life it should be firm and positive! By : Rupal Handoo (X B)

14 Page 14 Meluha by Amish is the first book of a proposed trilogy that focuses on the making of the legend of Lord Shiva. It attracts the readers from all walks of life. The story unfolds the odyssey of a person called Shiva. He is like a clan leader who came down from his home territory to Meluha in search of safety and shelter. Shiva, had to abandon his native place as it was frequently attacked by neighboring ethnic groups. Nandi, who according to legends is a close follower of lord Shiva; but, here has a different identity. He was an outsider who came from Meluha and offered Shiva a safe passage to their land. Shiva accepted it only to save his men and women from the barbarians. Shiva's arrival in Meluha started his journey of becoming Neelkanth. Shiva s throat turned azure as soon as he drank Somras. The Meluhans who call themselves Suryavanshi were a staunch believer in the Neelkantha legends and they believed that he would lead them to triumph over the Evil of Chandravanshi. Shiva, without knowing the implications of such a forced title and the honor attached to it, took the occurrence as a mere accident. But he was gleefully accepted by the king Daksh. Only Parvatraj had doubts. He was a follower of Lord Rama and was not ready to accept the supremacy of an outsider. Sati is the daughter of king Daksha which truly has a mythical base. On the other hand, she is the god-daughter of Parvatraj and legend says that Sati is often called Parvati as she is a descendant of Parvatraj. The marriage of Shiva-Sati serves the subplot where the main plot revolves round the battle between two kingdoms.. Rating : ***** By: Sourish Mahajan (VII D)

19 Page 19 Indian National Flag symbolises national pride and is one of the most respectable National Symbols. It was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on 22nd July 1947, when it became the official flag of the Dominion of India. The flag was subsequently retained as that of the Republic of India. The Indian national flag represents India's long struggle for freedom and is a national treasure. It signifies the status of India as an independent republic. Design The Indian national flag is popularly known as Tiranga which means three colours. It is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is 2:3. At the centre of the white band, is a wheel with 24 spokes in navy blue colour that indicates the Dharma Chakra (the wheel of law). Functions of Colours Saffron: Saffron is the upper most colour of the flag and is a symbol of courage and selflessness. White: The white colour in the Tiranga represents honesty, peace and purity. It highlights the importance of maintaining peace in the country. Green: The green colour of the flag represents faith and chivalry. It is a symbolism of prosperity, vibrance and life. Ashoka Chakra: The Ashoka Chakra or the Dharma Chakra (Wheel of Law) has 24 spokes and appears on the number of edicts of Ashoka. Code of Conduct Being a national symbol it is respected by every Indian. There are certain dos and don'ts laid down for common people regarding the Indian flag: When the National Flag is raised, the saffron colour band should be at the top. No flag or emblem should be placed either above the National Flag or to its right. All other flags to be placed to the left of the National Flag, if they are hung in a line. When the National Flag is carried out in a procession or parade, it shall be on the marching right or in front of the centre of the line, if there is a line of other flags. Normally the National Flag is flown over important government buildings like the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Parliament House, the Supreme Court of India, the High Courts, the Secretariats, the Commissioners' office etc. The National Flag or any imitation of it must not be used for purpose of trade, business, or profession. The National Flag should always be taken down in the evening at sunset. By: Shivam Roy (VI D)

21 Page 21 Parents are the first role model of their children Most of the parents would be amused to know that they are being observed every single day, did we know that from infancy period till adulthood our children observe and follow us. Do we understand and realize that our children observe our day to day behavior very carefully? We want and expect our children to learn and exhibit the right behavior in the society. The million dollar question arises that are we doing so? Let s see as Parents Answer truthfully to yourself that how will you react in the following hypothetical situations? If your child has scored less marks and didn t tell you? If your child breaks your favorite showpiece while playing? If teacher complaints about your ward? If your child doesn t study much? If you get aggressive and violent with your child then you have just inculcated aggression in them. So let s bring a desirable change in ourselves first. Let s try to be more patient, understanding, a good listener, non judgmental with our kids. Points to Ponder- We all are the product of nature (Heredity) and nurture (Upbringing and rearing). Always remember that you are your child s first hero Never let them down. Model the appropriate behavior you will see your child following it By : Manika Pal (Counsellor)

22 MODI MANIA - DOSTI Chale Saath Saath I could not help, but write once again about the dynamic and political astute leader of our country, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. While penning this down, my vision was filled with the images of Mr.Modi and the recent visit by the U.S.President, Barack Obama accompanied with his wife Michelle Obama for the Republic Day. It is such a great honour to have them both at our country s 66 th Republic Day Celebrations. Our charismatic leader, the voice of the nation Mr. Modi, deserves all the accolades and credit that goes in uniting and maintaining bilateral ties with the neighbouring countries. He definitely has all the agenda well laid out with the help of his able ministers to guide him well. The remarkable change that he bought in Gujarat as the Chief Minister, today has made the state of Gujarat as a sought out state, viable for investments and progress. As the leader of the state, he made the administrative process tech savvy; and he made sure that he himself was very approachable. This resulted in him accessing the remote corners, which further helped him to administer reforms at the grass root level. His speeches, oratory skills and vision won the heart of the people of colourful Gujarat. When such an enigmatic and media savvy leader becomes the Prime Minister of the second most populous democratic country in the world, then he surely is capable of bringing about the winds of change. He has very thoughtfully extended his hand with other nations to fight the problem of terrorism, cross border disputes. He has further taken the initiative to launch the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan advocating the ideology of the great Mahatma - Gandhi. With such an appealing leader amidst us, I am sure we are going to perceive more of the Chai pe Charcha meets. Let s look forward to a Bharat, endowed with its rich cultural heritage, values and ethics, blending the traditional with the modern, ready to succeed in its conduit ahead.
