Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions. They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. They give us a distraction from our day to day, exhausting routine of life, and give us some inspiration to remember the important things and moments in life. Festivals were started to pass the legends, knowledge and traditions onto the next generation. All festivals are cultural in one way or another. There are many types of cultural festivals such as National, Religious and Seasonal. They all serve the purpose of bringing happiness to our lives, and strengthen our sense of community. By : Aditi Gupta (IX D) Women Empowerment Women empowerment means emancipation of women from the vicious grips of social, economical, political, caste and gender-based discrimination. It means granting women the freedom to make life choices. Women empowerment does not mean defying Women rather it means replacing patriarchy with parity. It is to bring equality in the society for both male and female in all areas. Women empowerment is very necessary to make the bright future of the family, society and country. Women need fresh and more capable environment so that they can take their own right decisions in every area whether for themselves, family, society or country. In order to make the fully developed country, women empowerment is an essential tool to get the goal of development. There are many formulating strategies and initiating processes started by the Government of India in order to bring women into the mainstream of development. Women constitute half population of the whole country s population and need to be independent in every area for the holistic development of women and children. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said To awaken the people, it is the women who must be awakened. Once she is on the move, the family moves, the village moves, the nation moves. By : Anurag Singh (IX D)

Page 13 Follow The Moon I followed the moon Or did it follow me? I turned a corner It was still there you see. I tried to trick it In the shadows I hid; But the moon kept on watching That's what it did. A cloud passed before it; Now was my chance. But the stars in the sky Never could lie I walked on through the night. The moon followed me home Or did I follow the moon? I don't quite know. By : Ridhima Ghosh (V C)

Page 14 Corruption is not a new phenomenon in India. It has been prevalent in society since ancient times. History reveals that it was present even in the Mauryan period. Great scholar Kautilya mentions the pressure of forty types of corruption in his contemporary society. It was practiced even in Mughal and Sultanate period. When the East India Company took control of the country, corruption reached new height. Corruption in India has become so common that people now are averse to thinking of public life with it. Corruption has been defined variously by scholars. But the simple meaning of it is that corruption implies perversion of morality, integrity, character or duty out of mercenary motives, i.e. bribery, without any regard to honour, right and justice. Corruption is not a unique Indian phenomenon. It is witnessed all over the world in developing as well as developed countries. It has spread its tentacles in every sphere of life, namely Business Administration, Politics, Officialdum, and Services. In fact, there is hardly any sector which can be characterized for not being infected with the vices of corruption. Corruption is rampant in every segment and every section of society, barring the social status attached to it. To root out the evil of corruption from society, we need to make a comprehensive code of conduct for Politicians, Legislatures, Bureaucrats, and such code should be strictly enforced. Judiciary should be given more independence and initiatives on issues related to corruption. Special courts should be set-up to take up such issues and speedy trial is to be promoted. Law and order machinery should be allowed to work without political interference. NGO s and media should come forward to create awareness against corruption in the society and educate people to combat this evil. By : Tanmay Ranjan (X A)

Page 16 The way we live today, is significantly different from the way our forefathers lived fifty sixty years ago. Thanks to modern technology, today we have got just about every amenity we need to live a comfortable life. Some people believe that modern technology has made our lives more complicated. They are of the opinion that we should learn to do away with it. Is that possible? Modern technology might have made our lives more complicated, but one has got to admit that it has improved our lives in several other ways. For example, cars and buses have made commuting easier. Electricity has literally brightened our lives. Air conditioning has made summer months tolerable. Cell phones and internet make it possible to stay connected wherever we are. Home appliances are a boon for homemakers. Technology has also considerably improved our productivity. On the flip side, technology has made our lives complicated too. There is no escaping from the always-on connectivity. Before the advent of cell phones and internet, taking a break was a whole lot easier. People just had to pack their bags and go to the place they like to unwind. Now that cell phone terminals are available in virtually every part of the world, people can never escape from their work or problems. Even when they are on a family vacation, few people can resist the temptation to check their work . This need to stay constantly connected has only made our lives more stressful. Modern technology has also made us physically inactive and prone to develop several lifestyle diseases. Does that mean that we should do without modern technology? Well, it is not as easy as it sounds. Technology is addictive. It is not easy to live without the technological innovations we are used to enjoying. Can anybody now think of a world where we don t have access to electricity or telephone? The truth is that we can t. After analyzing the situation it is felt that though modern technology has made our lives more complicated, it is not something that we can do without. What we need to do is to use it responsibly. 19 Page 19 Endeavour Batteries. Everyone has used at least one type of these little metal cylinders [or cuboids, for that matter]. And surely you would have heard about DIY batteries such as a potato battery or maybe a lemon battery. But what about a Candle Battery?? Wait, what did you just say?? Are you NUTS? This might be your reaction. But I m not kidding! It s true, candles can generate enough DC current to light up LED s, Motors and Bulbs used in science models. Just think about it, a pair of candles as the powerhouse of your Science Model!!! So with no further delay, let s begin. Prerequisites Subsided Excitement (Excitement + DIY = Disaster) A pair of candles (Big, Thick ones recommended) A pair of five-inch nails (Any long conductor shall do the trick) At least a metre of thin insulated wire (The one used for small motors, LEDs and the like) Matches (for lighting up the candles ) DC Motor / LED / Bulb / Buzzer etc. Caution : Young/Over excited/inexperienced DIYers should seek help from a elder before handling matches or any sharp object Procedure Take the candles and ram in a nail in each, horizontally across its width such that the nail is parallel to the base of the candle when it is stood on a level surface. Take care to ensure to go at least half the thickness of the candle. Cut the wire in half and strip its insulation from both ends. Attach one end of each piece of wire to one nail using either crocodile clips or by just wrapping it round the nail. Connect the loose/free ends of the wires to whatever device you want to power up, may it be LED, Motor, Buzzer or something else. Light up the candles. If everything went well, you ll find your connected device working. Have Fun and Enjoy.

Page 20 Oliver Twist, published in 1838, is one of Charles Dickens' best-known and well-loved works. Oliver is born in a workhouse in the first half of the nineteenth century. His mother died during his birth, and he was sent to an orphanage where he was poorly treated. Oliver ran away from there and found himself under the wing of the London crime boss Fagin. Along with other young thieves working for Fagin, Oliver turned to a life of crime against his better judgment. Still, he doesn t hesitate to show his kindness whenever he gets a chance amidst of wickedness. The story ends on a positive note with Oliver finding happiness under the care of a law-abiding, wealthy family. Oliver Twist is notable for Dickens' negative portrayal of criminals and their immoral, disgusting lives. The book calls the public s attention to various contemporary evils, including the Poor Law, Child Labour and the recruitment of children as Criminals. The novel is not only, a brilliant work of art but also a tremendously important document in social history. Rating : **** By: Riddhima Ghosh (V C)

Page 21 Endeavour He defied death for six days buried under snow and almost pulled off a medical miracle. But even in his death, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad demonstrated that heroes live on. Hailing from a poor agricultural family in Betadur village near Hubballi, Koppad s parents and three brothers learnt to live with whatever they produced on their 1.5 acre land. It was a childhood of struggle that young Hanumanthappa bravely faced and which helped him endure bigger battles ahead. He walked six miles every day from his village to the high school in Aralikatti and the trudge did not deter his resolve to finish his studies and chase his dream of joining the army. He was rejected eight times at the recruitment rallies held in Gadag, Dharwad and Belagavi. His family and friends in the village often asked him to change his dream so that he could get a job in Hubballi or Dharwad. There were many opportunities in Hubballi-Dharwad when Koppad had finished his SSLC. But he never gave up his ambition to wear the uniform. Each time he was rejected, we advised him to take up some other job, but he never listened. He used to wait for the next rally. The only time he demanded money from the house was for attending rallies. He finally enrolled as a soldier in 19 Madras Regiment during a rally at Ooty, recalls Govind, elder brother of Koppad. Even after joining the Army, not for him the craving for a peace time posting. The fighting spirit in Hanumanthappa drew him to the conflict zones of Jammu and Kashmir, where he excelled in combating the separatists. In fact he volunteered for a second stint in Jammu and Kashmir and proved his mettle in fighting the insurgency in North -Eastern states too. His exemplary spirit took him to the heights of Siachen, where he has emerged a legend even in death. Till recently his family was living in a dilapidated house and they moved into the present new house at the time of his wedding. Childhood of struggles Hailing from a poor agricultural family in Dharwad s tiny Betadur village, Hanamanthappa walked six miles to school, and had set his sights on becoming a soldier. Rejected eight times at recruitment rallies, this kabaddi player never gave up. Enrolled in Army The 33-year-old was enrolled in the 19th Battalion of the Madras Regiment on October 25, 2002 Challenging assignments During 14 years of service, he served 10 years on difficult terrain, including J&K and the North East his last post. He was serving in Siachen from August Koppad was deployed at the Army s Sonam Post when an avalanche engulfed their camp on Feb 3.

Page 22 Endeavour Dyslexia- Focus on strengths, not just weaknesses Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia may experience difficulties in other language skills such as spelling, writing, and speaking. Dyslexia is a life-long status, however, its impact can change at different stages in a person s life. It is referred to as a learning disability because dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment. All children need love, encouragement, and support, and for kids with learning disabilities, such positive reinforcement can help ensure that they emerge with a strong sense of self-worth, confidence, and the determination to keep going even when things are tough. In searching for ways to help children with learning disabilities, remember that you are looking for ways to help them help themselves. Your job as a parent, teacher, or facilitator is not to cure the learning disability, but to give the child the social and emotional tools he or she needs to work through challenges. In the long run, facing and overcoming a challenge such as a learning disability can help the child grow stronger and more resilient. Always remember that the way you behave and respond to challenges has a big impact on your child. A good attitude won t solve the problems associated with a learning disability, but it can give the child hope and confidence that things can improve and that he or she will eventually succeed. Signs of dyslexia The problems displayed by individuals with dyslexia involve difficulties in acquiring and using language - - reading and writing letters in the wrong order is just one manifestation of dyslexia and does not occur in all cases. Other problems experienced by dyslexics include: Learning to speak Organizing written and spoken language Learning letters and their sounds Memorizing number facts Spelling Reading Learning a foreign language Correctly doing math operations Not all students who have difficulties with these skills are dyslexic. Formal testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of suspected dyslexia. By: Ms. Himali Jain (Special Educator)

How to Beat Exam Stress in 5 Easy Ways Every student experiences exam stress. It s an unavoidable part of student life that can be a tough nut to crack. Remember, stress exists for a reason and you can choose to let it be the reason of your downfall or use it to drive you to improve your work. To combat exam stress, firstly you need to understand the reasons behind this heightened anxiety. Researchers have uncovered some common explanations for this: 1. Low motivation levels 3. Lack of preparation and planning 2. High expectations from others 4. Competition with peers Students should pause, reflect and choose a path that will help them overcome the impasse, not just wait for the wave to engulf them. Five Ways to Beat Exam Stress 1. Listen to the Music Listening to the music can create a positive and productive environment by elevating your mood and encouraging you to study more effectively and for longer. 2. Plan your Study Routine This may not be a big surprise but what is shocking is the amount of students who discount the benefits of creating a personal study plan. With some initial effort, you can become more productive and motivated each day you approach your study by understanding your learning progress. 3. Try to Get Enough Sleep The benefits of a proper night s sleep can never be underestimated. Most importantly, sleep helps your brain to assimilate new knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to test day. Anyone who has tried to concentrate with half a night s sleep can also testify to improved focus with better sleep. 4. Give Your Mind Space Meditation is one of the most effective ways to take a break and see your stress from a different perspective. Practicing meditation is another way to maintain focus while improving both mental and physical health to reduce pre-exam stress. 5. Break Free from Distractions I bet you don t even realize the number of times you check Facebook, Instagram or whatever your vice is? When you add it all up together, it amounts to a significant waste of time. It can be hard to detach from your life outside of studying but keeping the end goal and timeframe in mind will ease the process.
