week 1: finding joy (philippians 1:1-26) to begin Think about one piece of advice that has greatly affected how you live. Besides members of your family, who are you most thankful for? What about them makes you thankful? How would you define joy? What are the differences between joy and happiness? What brings you joy in life? Is it possible to have true joy in the midst of an uneasy and stressful life? Read Philippians 1:1-26 digging deeper The book of Philippians contains Paul s letter to the church in Philippi. Paul writes to the Philippians from prison because of their connection with him in ministry. Throughout Paul s letter, he uses the word joy numerous times and in different ways. Paul uses his letter to communicate the truths of joy in suffering, joy in giving, and joy in connecting with others. We find the greatest joy in knowing and accepting Jesus and sharing His message of hope with those around us! When we go through the rough patches in life we often lose focus of the bigger picture of what living for Jesus is all about. At one point or another, we ve all experienced some sort of trouble in life. This could be a divorce, losing your job, a debilitating illness, difficult family situations, and other unfortunate events. Interestingly enough, a lot of the time these troubles we face bring opportunities that we normally would never have had. As followers of Jesus, we can use these opportunities and hard times to bring glory to God just like Paul did while he was in prison! Paul tells the Philippians that because of their prayers and the work of the Holy Spirit, he is confident that he will be freed from prison either in life or death. We can see how Paul longs to be with Jesus, but he knows that if he remains here on earth there is still work to do for the kingdom. Paul is ready to share the Gospel with everyone he meets as he finds purpose and meaning in sharing the love of Jesus with others. 1. Why does Paul see the Philippians as partners in the Gospel? Why do you think Paul was so thankful to have partners in the Gospel?

2. How does love abound more and more? What are some ways we can practice abounding love? 3. How is it possible to remain pure and blameless like in verse 10? 4. What does Paul s prayer teach about how we should pray for others? 5. When have you had a deep connection with another follower of Jesus, though they were very different from you? 6. How did Paul s time in prison actually help to further the Gospel? When has God allowed a bad situation in your life to actually bring about good? 7. Summarize what Paul is saying in verses We focus a lot on having the right motives, but what does Paul say in verses 15-18? 8. What does Paul mean in verse 21 when he says, For me to live is Christ and to die is gain?" What were Paul s conflicting desires? In what way might we have the same conflicting desires? How can we adopt this attitude as followers of Jesus? 9. What are the most difficult circumstances you are presently facing? live it out Who has played a major role in introducing you to Jesus or significantly impacting your life in Jesus? Find a way to thank them this week. Knowing who Jesus is should mold us and change us. Ask God to show you how to allow that knowledge of Jesus to change the way you think and live. Reading God s Word can help you grow in knowledge and depth of insight and discern what is best. Make a plan to read more of the Bible try using the YouVersion mobile app to get started. Maybe do it as a group to hold each other accountable! Commit to reading the Book of Philippians as we go through it together. Reconnect with a friend you haven t spoken to in a while who has brought you joy. Catch up and thank God for how this person has impacted your life. With God s help, attempt to live a life that will have a positive impact on others for Jesus. Pray that you learn to experience joy amidst sorrow.

week 2: joy together (philippians 1:27-2:4) to begin Think about a time when you were faced with an unpleasant situation that was out of your control, yet you remained optimistic. How were you able to look on the brighter side of things? How long have you been a follower of Jesus? How has your faith in Jesus and your relationship with God affected the way you live life? What are some habits that you stopped doing and started doing when you decided to follow Jesus? Read Philippians 1:27-2:4 digging deeper Paul instructs the Philippians to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ and to stand firm in one Spirit. He also encourages them in the midst of their suffering to be united, humble, and to look out for the interests of others. In verses 3-4 Paul writes, you are to value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. What a challenge! Looking back over the day, how many times did you do this? Not too often? As followers of Jesus, this should be normal and well practiced! This is what Christian community is about, being able to place each other s need above our own especially when we see someone who needs the help. As a community, we can be thankful for the blessings that come from being united together, as we learn to love God and each other. 1. What s the hardest part about placing another person s needs above your own? 2. What does it look like to live a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ? What other Scripture passages come to mind that mention what it looks like to live a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ? 3. What kind of suffering did these early Christians face? What kind of suffering do Christians face today? How can suffering bring us closer to Jesus? 4. In verse 1, do you think Paul is genuinely asking whether the Philippians have any encouragement, comfort, tenderness, and compassion? Why or why not?

5. Why do you think being like-minded, having the same love, and being one in spirit would make Paul s joy complete? As a follower of Jesus, what does it mean to be like-minded, having the same love, and being one in spirit? 6. Is it possible for followers of Jesus to disagree and still be like-minded and one in spirit? Why or why not? Have you faced a situation where you disagreed with another Christian? What did you do? 7. Why does Paul give the instructions in verses 3-4 in this passage about being like-minded? How do verses 3-4 help us to understand the nature of humility? 8. Why is it important as followers of Jesus to humble ourselves and see others interests above our own? What are some practical ways you can learn to place others interests above your own? live it out Look for ways to put others first. What are some ways we can put others first in our families, in our Life Group, in our church, and even in our communities? Identify a difficult situation in your life right now that seems too difficult. Give the situation to God, asking Him to use it for good. Does death scare you? Pray that God will give you confidence to live and to die for Him. Pray that God will open your eyes to see the good in both living and dying. Take a moment and reflect over the life you ve lived. Are you living a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ? Where have you done well? Where might you need some work? If you re suffering right now, thank God for this opportunity to grow closer to Him. Ask Him to give you perspective during this time of suffering. Pray for our Christian brothers and sisters around the world who suffer for their faith. Find and support a missionary whether financially, prayerfully, or through encouraging letters.

week 3: just like jesus (philippians 2:5-11) to begin Is it more difficult to talk about your successes or your failures? Do you find it hard to talk about your strengths or your weaknesses? Why do you think this is? We have many opportunities to live life with one another and care for each other. We live and grow in community whether getting married and forming a family together, playing together on a sports team, or living together on campus. When have you looked out for the interests of another person? Did your attitude have any effect on how much you cared? How did caring for others make a difference in your relationship? What qualities does Jesus have that we should aspire to have? Read Philippians 2:5-11 digging deeper Starting in verse 5, Paul tells the Philippians to have the same mindset of Christ in their relationships with one another. In the following verses, Paul reminds the Philippians of who Jesus is, what He did, and where He now stands. In verses 5-11, Paul describes the attitude of Jesus as the ultimate example of humility and selfless love for others. According to verses who is Jesus? According to verses 8... what did He do? According to verses where is He? Paul uses Jesus as the ultimate example of what a life committed to God looks like. Because Jesus was willing to lay down His life on our behalf, He is the one that deserves to be exalted. A great quality of Jesus was His humble nature, so humble that He was obedient to death, even death on a cross. As followers of Jesus, by humbling ourselves and being obedient, we can bring glory to God and become more like Jesus. 1. According to this passage, do you remember what the mindset of Christ is? How can we learn to have the mindset of Christ? 2. How does the idea of a humble Jesus match your idea of God?

3. In verse 6, what does it mean that Jesus did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage? 4. How did each of Christ s actions illustrate humility and a concern for the interests of others? 5. What does it look like to humble ourselves in our relationships today? Is it wise to humble ourselves today? Is humility valued today? 6. When do you find it easier to humble yourselves? When do you find it more difficult? Why do you think it is so difficult to be humble? 7. What does having the name which is above every name mean? What does this tell us about Jesus? At whose name will every knee bow? What will every tongue confess? When and where will it happen? One day all of us will stand before God just as Jesus did. We should look to Jesus as the ultimate example of faithfulness and learn to live a life that is faithful and committed until the end. Just like Jesus. 8. What are some practical ways that we can learn to live a life of faith and commitment to God and His purposes? live it out Think through a broken relationship with another follower of Jesus. Ask God to show you how to forgive this person, how to reunite, and how to be like-minded even if you disagree. Decide how you will go about apologizing to and reuniting with another follower of Jesus. What steps will you take? When? Pray and think about how you can show humility as you continue to live for Jesus. Ask God to show you any areas where there needs to be more humility. What aspects of Jesus attitude would you like to work on this week? It could mean being humble, being obedient to God and His will in your life, or allowing God to be glorified in your life through everything you do. What act of humble service could you do for someone you know?

week 4: get real (philippians 2:12-30) to begin When you go to the gym to work out, over time you will start to see improvements in your health and wellness. When we work our bodies we strengthen our heart and muscles and generally feel better about ourselves. For those of us who aren t in shape, when we start going to the gym we will potentially lose weight as well! When it comes to our spiritual life, it s also important that we work out. How do you work out your spiritual side? What are the benefits of working out spiritually? Do you feel spiritually fit? Why or why not? I m sure we can all think of a complainer that we know. Don t point anyone out! Maybe you have even been called a complainer before! If you think about it, we really don t have much to complain about. We live in a part of the world where luxuries and conveniences are normal and a part of everyday life. For example, we can communicate with people around the world by phone, text, , Facebook, Twitter, or Skype. In the midst of all the luxury and convenience, why do you think we still find some things to complain about? What do you find yourself complaining the most about? Do you enjoy being in the company of a complainer? Why or why not? Read Philippians 2:12-30 digging deeper Here we read that Paul is telling the Philippians to do everything without grumbling or arguing. Sounds hard, doesn t it? In other words, we need to learn to find joy more and more while complaining less and less. Why must we do this? So that we may become blameless and pure in our warped and crooked world. One look around the world we live in and anyone can see how selfish and wicked we are. However, because of the salvation we have received from Jesus and what He has done for us, we can live for God and His purposes and be what He desires us to be. Paul encourages the Philippians to live for Christ whether in Paul s presence or in his absence and to work out their salvation in fear and trembling. It is important to live for Jesus whether we are alone or in community. Paul uses himself, Timothy, and Epaphroditus as examples to show the Philippians what a life worthy of the Gospel looks like. A life worthy of the Gospel is a life that is lived in humility and looks out for the interests of others. As we live our lives, may the reality of what we say and believe about the Christian life be lived out in real ways. Paul describes these two men as great examples of what it means to live a life for Jesus. A life lived

for Jesus means being willing to give up our life for the One who has forever changed the world in which we live. With God s help, we can work on overcoming a bitter and negative spirit, rejoice more, and complain less. We will let our light shine in a crooked and depraved generation as we share the message of Jesus with those who need it. 1. In verse 12, what does it mean to work out your salvation with fear and trembling? Who works in us? Why and how does He work in us? Is salvation dependent upon your works? Why or why not? Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and discuss. 2. What does the Bible say about our attempts to be righteous on our own? Read Isaiah 64:6. 3. What does the Bible say about the role of Christian works? Read Ephesians 2: What is the proper view of grace and works? How are we saved? What are we saved for? Read James 2:14-18 and discuss. 5. What is the proper way to approach God? With fear? As a buddy? As an untouchable God? How do you approach God? 6. What s God s role in transforming and growing us? What s our role? 7. Why was it especially important for the early Christians to not grumble and argue? What kind of pressures were they facing? 8. What does it mean to be children of God? Why is this significant to include in this passage? 9. When have you felt you were among a warped and crooked generation? 10. Paul is rejoicing in suffering. How often do you rejoice when suffering or hardship comes your way? 11. Who in your life has been there for you through thick and thin like Timothy was there for Paul? Who have you been able to mentor and invest in like Paul did with Timothy? Who has invested in you? Who has been a co-worker to you in ministry? live it out What are you currently doing to work out your salvation?" Describe a way that you will choose to act this week, knowing that God will empower you to accomplish that work.

Explore spiritual disciplines such as journaling, fasting, and Scripture meditation this week. Find how and when you re best able to meet God and allow Him to work in you. Consider connecting with God through exercise, sharing a meal with friends, or writing encouraging letters. In what ways are you tempted to complain and argue? Think about the ways that you can overcome those temptations and how you can be accountable to each other to be victorious in this area of your life. Remove any form of discouragement this week. Place encouraging verses throughout your space--around your home or office. Consider printing off a copy of Who I am in Christ which can be found online here: Thank God for the people who have invested in your life over the years. Ask God to show you a few people who you can invest in. Keep a journal of blessings and things you re grateful for. At the end of each day, thank God for working in your life to allow these blessings. Give God the glory for His work in your life! prayer points

week 5: joy killers (philippians 3:1-11) to begin What are a few of your pet peeves? What is something that really kills your joy? What is something you have confidence in? How important is it to have confidence in life? Is confidence always a good trait? Can confidence in the wrong thing lead to problems? Read Philippians 3:1-11 digging deeper In verse 1 of chapter 3, Paul begins by telling his fellow believers to rejoice in the Lord. Joy is an amazing gift that comes from knowing God and trusting Him no matter the circumstances that life may bring. If you think about it, Paul is held captive in prison while he writes this letter. I would call this a difficult life situation. What does Paul s joy in prison say about his faith in God? For most of us, when we are faced with difficult life situations, it can be difficult to find joy. Our joy isn t found in our own ability but in our relationship with God through Jesus! Paul tells the church in Philippi to watch out for people who teach that we can have confidence in our own flesh. Paul is saying that these false teachers are teaching people to trust in circumcision and law-keeping in addition to the blood of Christ. Paul reminds them that even in the case of people who seem to be wonderful, their deeds are like filthy rags compared to Jesus and trusting in His righteousness. When it comes to our salvation, we cannot put our confidence in what we can do or in who we are, but only in the righteousness of Jesus. Simply knowing about Jesus is not enough. We can have a relationship with Jesus that goes beyond head knowledge and includes experiencing Jesus living through us with His power, which comes when we suffer for the Gospel and die to our selfish desires. 1. How often do we trust in or put our faith in our own abilities? Is trusting our own abilities a bad idea? Why or why not? 2. Why is Paul writing about circumcision? What debate was happening at the time? 3. Compare verses 2-4 to Romans 2:25-29 and Ephesians 2: What was the debate about circumcision? What is Paul s answer to this debate?

4. Why does Paul mention all of these things in verses 4-6? Is he bragging? What kinds of things has Paul been through? 5. What does it mean to consider everything a loss that Paul may gain Christ? What did you lose when you started following Christ? What did you gain? What might these early Christians have lost when they started following Christ? 6. Paul was depending on God to make him righteous. What does someone s life look like if they re depending on themselves to become righteous? 7. What does it mean that Paul wants to know Christ by participating in His sufferings and becoming like Him in His death? How often do you consider knowing Christ through suffering? How do we tend to get to know Christ better? 8. Why is it important that Paul clarifies that he has not yet reached the goal? Why is it dangerous to think that we ve arrived in our Christian faith? 9. How does Paul s advice to forget what s behind and strain toward what is ahead resonate with you? Do you think it is good advice? Why or why not? 10. What is the goal that we re pressing on toward? Does pressing on require that we be perfect? Why or why not? live it out God cares about the transformation happening within us and how we express ourselves by our words and actions. Make a list of situations, events, or choices over the past few months that show God is transforming you from the inside out. Thank God for working in and through you. Think through what you ve lost as a result of following Jesus. Then write down all the blessings you ve gained by following Him. Praise God for the ways He is blessing you. Pray for our Christian brothers and sisters around the world who lose a lot more than we do when they choose to follow Jesus. Pray that they might know peace in the midst of suffering. Repent of the idea that you ve arrived spiritually. Ask God to show you the areas in which you need to grow and how you can improve.

week 6: pathway to joy (philippians 3:12-21) to begin What was your favourite sport to compete and participate in as you were growing up? Describe what it was like to press on towards the goal in that particular sporting event. Did you ever feel like giving up? What kept you going towards the goal? What are your primary goals in life? What have you done to achieve them? If someone had been watching your life this past month, what would they conclude were your primary goals in life? How can your Christian walk change as you gain new understanding over time? How can mature followers of Jesus support new Christians as they begin to figure out what the Christian walk looks like? Read Philippians 3:12-21 digging deeper In this section of Scripture, Paul talks about pressing on towards the goal in order to get the prize. The main goals in life can often be identified by things that we spend a majority of our time. Paul uses this imagery of pressing on towards a goal to describe the Christian life. As a follower of Jesus we need to forget what is behind, good or bad, and strain to what is ahead, motivated to live up to what God has already established in us through Jesus. Paul invited the Philippians to join him in imitating Jesus and to be on guard against the enemies of the cross. He reminded them about their citizenship in heaven as we eagerly await our Saviour to return and transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body. A pathway that involves following Jesus is a pathway on which you will experience joy. 1. Would you describe following Jesus as something to which you give a majority of your time? 2. When has God changed your mind about something and given you new direction? 3. What does it mean to live up to what we have already attained?

4. Are new Christians and mature Christians held to different standards? Why or why not? 5. In verse 12, Paul says that he has not already obtained all this, and that he presses on. What has Paul not obtained? What is he pressing on for? What is the danger of thinking that we have arrived or completed our spiritual journey? What is the importance of pressing on in our spiritual journey? 6. Who have you looked to as a model for how to live the Christian life? Why did you look to that person? What is the danger when we look to other people as models to live our Christian life? Who needs to be our ultimate model of how to live? 7. In verse 19, Paul gives descriptions of those who live as enemies of the cross. What four statements are made about them? What do those statements mean? Contrast the enemies of the cross with those who follow after Christ. Do people in our world want to follow these enemies of the cross? What makes it tempting to follow an enemy of the cross? 8. In verse 20, Paul reminds the church that their citizenship is in heaven. What does it mean that we are citizens of heaven? What difference does this fact make in your life? How does it affect your outlook, your behavior, and your priorities? 9. Most everyone has something about their body that they would like to change. In verse 21 Paul mentions that our bodies will be transformed from a lowly state to a glorious state when our Savior returns. How does the promise of a new body help you deal with the limitations of your current body? Describe, to the best of your ability, what you think your transformed body will look like. Does the reality of this bodily transformation cause you to eagerly await Jesus return? Does it give you one more reason to look forward to heaven? What can you do to increase your expectancy of the Savior s return? live it out Think through an area of stubbornness in your life. Open that area up to God to examine and to transform you. Choose to show extra grace to a new follower of Jesus in your life who is still working out how to live as a Christian. Pray for this person and praise God for their new life in Jesus.

Examine the people you look to as models of the Christian walk. How has their example helped you? How might you be placing them on an unfair pedestal? Praise God for the Christian women and men in your life who have served as great models of living a Christian life. Write one person a note thanking them for being a great model. Read Galatians 5: Which fruit of the Spirit can you say that you have enough of in your life? There is most likely room for more of God s Spirit in your life. Pray that God would give you more of His Spirit to help you press on towards the goal and live up to your potential in Christ. As you live your life this week, think about the people that you are imitating. Are they good examples of a Godly life or bad examples that lead us to destruction? prayer points

week 7: promises to live on (philippians 4) to begin Share a time either recently or in the past when you were able to help someone. Did you do it freely or did you feel obligated to help this person? After you were done helping them, how did you feel about the whole experience? Was your ability to help someone a blessing to the other person, to you, or to both of you? Read Philippians 4 digging deeper In this last section of Scripture, Paul is writing to the Philippians about the importance of agreeing with one another and standing firm in the Lord. Paul gives them advice if disagreement ever occurs, how to fix the problem, and how to prevent future disagreements from occurring. Paul gives the Philippians wonderful instruction to focus on excellent and praiseworthy things in life. Paul also expresses how we need to look past our differences and find ways to get along with each other as followers of Jesus. Paul encourages the Philippians, reminding them of their assurance in Jesus as Provider and how important it is to be content whatever the circumstances life may throw. We can look to Jesus for our daily strength and be assured that He will supply all our needs. As followers of Jesus it is important that we have hearts of gratitude and give all the glory to our God and Father. 1. What does it mean to rejoice? How can we rejoice always? 2. Why is rejoicing always important for followers of Jesus? 3. When have you found yourself worrying about something, gave it to God, and felt a weight lifted off your shoulders? Why not take advantage of this more often? 4. In verse 7, what result does Paul promise to the Philippian church? Is this something that you would like to see in your life? What is the peace of God? How does it guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus? Does the peace of God help you to resolve conflicts with others in your life? Is having the peace of God important in your life? What does it mean that the peace of God transcends all understanding?

5. Go ahead and re-read verse 8. How can thinking about these things help to prevent us from being involved in conflicts with others and divisions in the church? 6. Paul says to think about excellent and praiseworthy things. What does thinking about these things do for you in your life? What do you find yourself thinking about most often? Why is it important for us to focus our minds on true and excellent things? 7. Paul mentions that he is not in need because he has learned to be content in every situation. How does Paul define contentment? What does it mean to be content? Have you experienced contentment in your life? How does Paul s view of contentment compare to the modern world s view of contentment? Do you need to implement Paul s view of contentment in your life? 8. Paul continues his letter by grouping together practical advice on rejoicing, being gentle, praying, and thinking of good things. Why do you think he ends with these? Why might they have made the cut? 9. When have you heard verse 13 quoted? How have you heard people use it? What is verse 13 referring to? Can we really do anything through His strength? Are there any exceptions? 10. Paul mentions in verses that the Philippian church has been faithful in their giving to Paul even when other churches chose not to give. Is Paul upset because some people aren t helping him? Why was it important for the Philippian church to know the value of their giving to Paul s ministry? Was Paul s desire for the church to give selfishly or selflessly? When you give to meet the needs of God s Kingdom, do you fear that your giving will leave you without enough to meet your own needs? Does this fear keep you from giving? 11. What is God s promise in verse 19 to those who give to meet the needs within His Kingdom? Is there a difference between meeting our needs and giving us what we want? 12. What does it mean that God will meet all our needs according to the riches in Christ Jesus? Why is it important that Paul included verse 20? What does this say about his perspective? live it out Identify someone in your church or group with whom you are not likeminded. Pray about how you might reconcile this relationship.

live it out continued... Begin a blessings journal, each day writing down several things you are grateful for. Then when you are going through a rough patch you will be able to look back and see everything God has done for you. Ask God to show you how to grow in gentleness. Pray that He will show you when and where you are less than gentle, and how you can be gentler in the future. Whenever you feel anxious, pray this quick prayer: God, I give this worry to You, and ask for Your peace. After a week, reflect on your level of anxiety. Learn to release control of your worries to God. Look up several passages about God s love, strength, power, and wisdom. Rest in the knowledge that God is big enough, powerful enough, and wise enough to deal with your problems. Spend one week taking inventory of your thought life. What are the thoughts that flood your mind on a day-to-day basis? If you notice any negative patterns, replace them with thoughts of God s love. Fill your mind with positive thoughts by starting your day with the Word of God. Confess your anger to God. Ask Him to show you His blessings. Intentionally live on a little less resources each month and give away the extra to the people God puts on your heart. Choose to take that step of faith you ve been putting off. Lean into God s strength.
