1 AUGURING WELL FOR NALCO Try holding a conch shell to your ear, the sound of the ocean, humming gently, can be heard. It is actually the natural vibration or cosmic energy of the earth that gets magnified on entering the conch shell. These unique whorls are directed clockwise in perfect synchronization with universal harmony. That is why a conch shell is blown during sacred rites to get rid of negative energy. The vibrations from these conch shells can dispel evil forces from the earth and also clear environmental pollution! In one of the cultural programmes of Nalco at Bhubaneswar recently, the conch-blowers of Narendrapur in Ganjam district of Orissa, presented a unique Shankh Dhwani recital.

2 THE SHANKH DHWANI Audited Financial Results Nalco s Net Profit jumps by 52% to Rs.2381 crore Highest-ever Turnover of Rs.6515 crore, up by 22% In the previous issue of Parichaya, the unaudited results were highlighted. The audited results for the last fiscal have been announced subsequently. According to audited financial results taken on record by the Board during the meeting held in Bhubaneswar on June 26, Nalco has reported a 52% jump in net profit to Rs.2381 crore during the financial year , from Rs.1562 crore achieved in the previous year. The Company has also achieved the highest-ever sales turnover of Rs.6515 crore, recording an increase of 22% over the previous year s figure of Rs.5324 crore. The Company s export earnings also increased by 12% to Rs.2585 crore from Rs.2306 crore in the previous year. Similarly, the gross margin jumped by 40% to Rs.3942 crore from Rs.2811 crore. ROCE (return on capital employed) increased to 32% from 25% in the previous year. The EPS (earning per share) increased to Rs.37 from Rs.24 in the previous year. The Company has achieved an impressive CAGR of 22% in turnover over last 5 years. If the extraneous factor of price increase on LME is ignored, the CAGR in turnover reduces to 13%, which itself surpasses the global industry growth rate over the same period. We Feel Proud I have gone through couple of issues of Parichaya. I find it very informative, rich in content and makes us feel proud of Nalco s achievements. 3 Distinguished Visitors Subsequently, the 2nd Pay Revision Committee for executives of CPSEs, led by Justice M.J. Rao, Chairman, visited Nalco on June 11 & 12. During their stay, the 9-member team discussed various issues pertaining to pay and perks, with the senor officials of Nalco, Mahanadi Coalfields, RINL, BHPV and Dredging Corporation. As part of their study visit, the Members of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry were in Bhubaneswar on June 8 & 9. Led by Shri Swadesh Chakraborty, the 10-member Committee, interacted with the top officials of Nalco, Mahanadi Coalfields and Indian Rare Earths. EEPC EXPORT AWARD FOR NALCO Nalco has bagged the All India Export Award, instituted by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), in the Star Performer category, for the year On behalf of the Company, the award was received by Shri C.R. Pradhan, CMD I/c, from Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, at a function held in New Delhi on June 1. Nalco has played a pioneering role in the export of alumina and aluminium from India. Since inception, the Company has been constantly increasing its exports and forex earnings. During the financial year (the year under consideration for the above award), the Company exported 8.62 lakh tonnes of alumina and 95,747 tonnes of aluminium, earning a foreign exchange of Rs.2306 crore. It may be mentioned that during also, Nalco achieved a record export earning of Rs.2585 crore. 2

4 Once a Nalconian Forever a Nalconian Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean, we will miss you, until we meet again. Shri B.S. Singh Deo, ED (Marketing), retired from the services of the Company on attaining the age of superannuation. Shri Singh Deo had joined Nalco in 1982 as Deputy Materials Manager at Corporate Office. A touching farewell was accorded at the Corporate Office Auditorium on May 31. On the occasion, Shri B.L. Bagra, Director (Finance), Shri G. Kameswara Rao, Chief Vigilance Officer, Shri A. Ray, Director (P&A), Shri K.K. Mallick, Director (Commercial) and others recounted his contributions to the Company as well as his pleasing attributes. Shri R.N. Jena, GM(Smelter), was given a touching farewell on attaining the age of superannuation, at the S&P Complex, Angul, on May 31. Among the senior officers, Shri U.B. Patnaik, ED(S&P), Shri A.K. Sharma, GM(O&M), Shri S. S. Manurkar, GM(CPP) and Shri S.S. Patnaik, GM(H&A)I/c, were present on the dais. Besides them, a number of employees reminisced their experiences of working with Shri Jena and lauded his role towards the growth of the Company. Shri U.B. Patnaik, ED(S&P), handed over the service certificate and plaque while Shri S.S. Manurkar, GM(CPP), handed over the cheque to Shri Jena. In his emotion-laden speech, Shri R.N. 5 Shri S.P. Nag, CM (Electrical), CPP, Angul, retired from the services of the Company on attaining the age of superannuation, on March 31. Shri Nag had joined Nalco in 1984 at Damanjodi. Shri Nag was given a touching farewell by his colleagues and friends. Shri S.S. Manurkar, GM(CPP), presented a bouquet and handed over the service certificate to Shri Nag at the farewell meeting. Shri S.S. Pradhan, Sr. SSW, Grade-I, Damanjodi, retired from the services of the Company on March 31, on attaining the age of superannuation. A farewell meeting was organized at the HRD Centre, which was attended by colleagues and friends of Shri Pradhan. Shri G.K. Behera, ED(M&R), presented him a memento and handed over the service certificate. Shri K.C. Lamta, Sr. SSW, Grade I, Damanjodi, retired from the services of the Company on attaining the age of superannuation. A touching farewell was accorded to Shri Lamta at the HRD Centre on March 31. O B I T U A R Y Shri Chandra Mastiputia (45), who was working as Sr. SSW at Mines, Damanjodi, expired on May 7, due to illness. Born on , Late Shri Mastiputia had joined Nalco on as a Mazdoor. He is survived by his four sons Daitari, Badi, Durjya and Budu. Shri Dama Pujari (56), who was working as SSW at Mines, Damanjodi, expired on May 14, due to illness. Born on , Late Shri Pujari had joined Nalco on as a Mazdoor. He is survived by his wife Smt. Tilak Dei. Shri Abani Sahu (39), who was working as Asst. Chemist at CPP, Angul, passed away on June 9, due to illness. Born on , Late Shri Sahu had joined Nalco on as a Lab Asst. Trainee. He is survived by his wife Smt. Prajnya Paramita. Parichaya prays to the Almighty to rest the departed Souls in peace and provide strength to the bereaved families. 4

6 Nalco Corporate SC/ST Employees Welfare Association, Bhubaneswar, celebrated the 116th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on April 14. In a function held at Mahanadi Nivas Auditorium, Nalconagar, Bhubaneswar, Shri G. Kameswara Rao, IAS, Chief Vigilance Officer, Nalco was the chief guest, Dr. A.K. Sahoo, GM(MS & Admn.) and Shri Haladhar Sethi, President SC/ ST Youth Students Council, Bhubaneswar, were the guests of honour. Shri P.K. Sethi, General Secretary of the Association, delivered the welcome address and Shri S.K. Sethi, President, delivered the presidential address. Shri Chaitanya Ghadei, Vice-President of the Association, proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier in the morning, the day was celebrated with a difference, as the Association members arranged a Children s Day Out for 48 children of a local orphanage. The children were provided with an opportunity to interact with the International scuba diver and noted singer Shri Sabir Baksh at the Nalco swimming pool. At S&P Complex : Nalco SC/ST Employees Welfare Association of Angul celebrated the day with enthusiasm. In the morning, Shri U.B. Patnaik, ED(S&P), Shri R.N. Jena, the then GM(S), Shri P.K. Majhi, CMS, Nalco Hospital, Shri Charan Naik, President, Shri D. Sethi, General Secretary and other office-bearers of the Association paid tributes by garlanding the statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at the Ambedkar Park. Later in the evening, a function was organized at the Biju Patnaik Sports Complex, in which Dr. R.K. Nayak, Member of Parliament, National Technology Day Nalco celebrated the 9th National Technology Day at Corporate Office, Bhubaneswar, on May 11. Prof. S.N. Behera, Director, Institute of Material Science, Bhubaneswar, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Prof. Behera delivered a talk on Nano Technology and highlighted the emerging areas of this technology. Elaborating this, he said, aluminium being a functional material, needs to be lighter and stronger, to enhance its utility. This can be accomplished by using the nano size grain in the process of manufacturing aluminium. To take this process forward, the material scientists and technologists will have to collaborate among themselves, Prof. Behera added. Dr. C.R. Mishra, DGM(R&D), proposed a vote of thanks. At Angul National Technology Day was also celebrated at S&P Complex. On the occasion, Dr. G.V. Rao, Sr. Deputy Director, Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar, graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered a talk on Process options for exploiting lateritic nickel resources of Sukinda, Orissa. Shri S.N. Das, CM(R&D), also gave a presentation on Reduction of anode pin to carbon drop by increasing stub hole depth. Shri A.K. Sharma, GM(O&M), presided over the function and Shri B. Sahu, DGM(Elect.), addressed the gathering on the significance of Technology Day. Ambedkar Jayanti was the chief guest and Shri Bijaya Bahidar, Reader in Political Science, Binayak Acharya College, Berhampur, was the chief speaker. Among others, Shri S.S. Pattnaik, GM(H&A)I/c, Shri S.S. Manurkar, GM(CPP), Shri P.C. Sethi, DGM(HRD) and Shri Amiya Pandab, Editorial Board, Adhikar, were the dignitaries present on the occasion. Earlier, some household items were also distributed among the students of residential schools at Tantoloi, Balramprasad and Baghmunda. 9 HRD The Corn Story There was a farmer who grew superior quality and award-winning corn. Each year, he entered his corn in the state fair where it won the top honours. Once a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learnt something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours. How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are also entering the same corn competition each year? the reporter asked. Why Sir, said the farmer, didn t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior, sub-standard and poor quality corn, crosspollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn as well. The farmer gave a superb insight into life s connectivity. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbour s corn also improves. Perhaps, this is true in the organizational context too. No department can thrive in isolation. Peace and prosperity are often a participative and collective process. WHY EMPLOYEES LEAVE ORGANIZATIONS? Azim Premji, CEO, Wipro Every company faces the problem of people leaving the company for better pay or profile. Early this year, Mark, a senior software designer, got an offer from a prestigious international firm to work in its India operations, developing specialized software. He was thrilled by the offer. He had heard a lot about the CEO. The salary was great. The company had all the right systems in place: employeefriendly HR policies, a spanking new office, and the very best technology besides, a canteen that served superb food! Mark was sent abroad twice for training. My learning curve is the sharpest it s ever been, he said soon after he joined. Last week, less than eight months after he joined, Mark walked out of the job. Why did this talented employee leave? The answer lies in one of the largest studies undertaken by the Gallup Organization. The study surveyed over a million employees and 80,000 managers and was published in a book called First Break All The Rules. It came up with this surprising finding: If you re losing good people, look to their managers (i.e. men who manage them). Manager is the reason people stay and thrive in an organization. And he s the reason why people leave. When people leave they take knowledge, experience and contacts with them, straight to the competitor. 12 Vedanta to up aluminium output to 900,000 tonnes Vedanta Resources, the country s largest producer of copper and zinc, will boost annual production of aluminium to 900,000 metric tonnes in A 500,000-tonne smelter at Jharsuguda in India and expansions to existing capacity will allow the company to increase output, Gunjan Gupta, vicepresident of sales and marketing, said. The Jharsuguda smelter will be commissioned next year with the first phase of production to begin by early 2009 and full output by early London-based Vedanta is bidding against Hindalco Industries and Swiss commodity trader Glencore International AG for a stake in Aluminij dd Mostar, the largest aluminium smelter in the Balkans that is worth at least 76.8 million euros ($ 104 million). Pellets made out of aluminium and gallium can produce pure hydrogen when water is poured on them, offering a possible alternative to gasoline-powered engines, US scientists say. Hydrogen is seen as the ultimate in clean fuels, especially for powering cars, because it emits only water when burned. The US President has proclaimed hydrogen to be the fuel of the future, but researchers have not yet found the most efficient way to produce and store hydrogen. (Source: The New Indian Express ) China opts aluminium for copper China s demand for copper, the biggest in the world, might have been reduced by about 20,000 tonnes a year in the communications sector alone as some consumers turned to cheaper aluminium, a copper company executive said. Copper s use in construction had also fallen as users favoured aluminium and other metals and alloys, said Cai Minzheng, head of marketing at Chinalco Luoyang Copper Co, at a conference in Hong Kong. Aluminium wires and cable with copper coating were being used increasingly for communications, he said. (Source: Business Standard ) Bauxite ore output to rise 30% by 2010 India s production of bauxite ore, a key ingredient in aluminium manufacturing, is expected to increase 30 per cent in three years to 16 million tonnes a year fuelled by demand from both domestic and international markets. The country, which has a recoverable reserve of 2.3 billion tonnes, produces 12.3 million tonnes of bauxite ore every year. Annual exports are around 2.3 million tonnes. India has the fourth largest bauxite reserves in the world. The metallurgical grade bauxite deposits are spread over Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while refractory grade bauxite deposits are found in Gujarat and some parts of MP. (Source: Business Standard ) CEC opposes Vedanta Alumina s mining rights in Niyamgiri In a major blow to Vedanta Alumina Ltd. (VAL), the Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) in its report has opposed the company s lifting of bauxite from Niyamgiri mines. VAL is setting up a one-million alumina refinery at Lanjigarh and had entered into an agreement with Orissa Mining Corporation for mining at Niyamgiri Hills, where bauxite deposits are found. The committee in its report has made it clear that if VAL is given permission to mine bauxite from Niyamgiri, 660 hectares of virgin forest will be totally destroyed. Besides, there will be destruction of 50,000 rare plants having high medicinal value. Further, over 36 small streams apart from two rivers, which evolve from the hill, will be dried up depriving drinking water to a large number of population depending on the rivers. The committee also raised a question from cultural prospective stating that the people of Kondha tribe inhabiting in the hill consider the place divine and the mining at the hill will be a deadly blow to the age-old culture ethos. One of the crucial points, which strengthened the committee s argument dimming the company s hope, was rehabilitation of rare endangered species of animals for which the place is a natural habitat. Jena, the then GM(S), handed over trophies, as also cash prizes of Rs and Rs.8000 to the champion and runner-up teams respectively at the closing ceremony. At Damanjodi The 7th Nalco Open Volleyball Tournament was organized at the Community Centre premises, Damanjodi, from February 2 to 5. Eleven teams, including three teams in Women s category, from Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand participated in the tournament. In the finals, the Artillery team of Hyderabad beat East Coast Railways Sports Association, Visakhapatnam. In the women s category, Visakhapatnam Sports Club emerged champion defeating Orissa team. Rural Sports Meet Nagpuria Hockey Sangh, Bacheli, in a tournament organized by NMDC, Bacheli (Chhattisgarh), from January 14 to 17. Badminton for Physically Challenged Students from twenty Peripheral High Schools of Angul participated in a Rural Sports Meet, organized by Nalco Periphery Wing at S&P Complex, on January 10. Out of 160 participants Prasanta Nayak of Satyabadi High School, Badajorada and Sasmita Samal of Regional Girls High School, Chainpal, emerged champions in boys and girls groups, respectively. Hockey Team Excels The hockey team of Mines and Refinery Complex, Damanjodi, emerged champion by defeating Chhota Under the aegis of Badminton Sports Association of India for Disabled, the 3rd All India Super Six Badminton Tournament for the Physically Challenged was organized by The Club, Nalconagar and Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Services, Orissa, with due support from Nalco, at Biju Patnaik Sports Complex, Angul from January 19 to 21. 18 OUR SCHOOLS Little Miss Rainbow Ananya, daughter of Shri Pramod Sahoo, Manager, Smelter, and a student of Class VI of DPS, Angul participated in the Nanhi Pari (Little Miss India) competition, organized at KIIT campus, Bhubaneswar, from April 6 to 8. She was adjudged Little Miss Rainbow and received Rs as cash prize from Bollywood actress Mahima Chaudhury. Altogether 220 girls in the age group of 10 to 12 years from 20 states participated in the competition. Artistic Expressions Shri Prashant Das, Art Teacher of SVM, Nalconagar, put up a solo painting exhibition at Puri sea beach in loving memory of his father Late Laxmidhar Das, Former Vice-President of Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi. Altogether 30 paintings were displayed at the exhibition, which were subsequently exhibited at Angul from March 25 to 29. These paintings portrayed the life of people in the lanes and bylanes of Puri, which were highly appreciated by the visitors. Young Essayist Swagat, son of Shri P.C. 19 HEALTH GET THE BEST OUT OF Fresh Fruits We all think eating fruit means simply buying it, chopping it and popping it into the mouth. But then, one will benefit much more if one knows how and when to eat fruits. EAT FRUITS IN EMPTY STOMACH Fruits should be taken in an empty stomach not as dessert after the meal, as is often done. If you eat fruit in an empty stomach, it will play a major role to de-toxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy. What happens when you take fruits along with other items? Let s say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. As fruit digests faster than bread, the slice of fruit digests quickly and is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but its passage is blocked by the bread which takes longer to digest. In the meantime, the whole meal ferments and turns to acid. Consequently, when the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil. So, it is better to eat fruits in an empty stomach or before the main meals. We have heard people complaining Every time I eat watermelon I burp. Or, When I eat banana I feel like running to the toilet. Actually, all these will not arise if you eat the fruit in an empty stomach. Otherwise, the fruit mixes with other putrefying food and produces gas and hence one bloats. It is incorrectly presumed that some citrus fruits like orange and lemon are acidic, which enhance acidity if taken in an empty stomach. Research however shows that all fruits become alkaline in our body. FRUIT JUICE When you need to drink fruit juice drink only fresh fruit juice, not the preserved one. Similarly, do not drink juice that has been heated up. Also, do not eat cooked or preserved fruits, because you may not get all the nutrients. On the other hand, eating the pulp or whole fruit is far better than drinking the juice, as the fruit fibres are good for health. But, should you drink fruit juice, drink it slowly, sip by sip, because you must let it mix with your saliva before drinking it. FRUIT FAST A 3-day fruit fast is a very simple and effective way to cleanse and de-toxify your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look! During the fruit fast you can eat different fruits at different times, although occasionally mixed fruit salad would also be permissible and more tasteful.
