1 Inauguaration of Satya Bharti School Programme in Murshidabad by Hon ble Union Finance Minister: A CSR initiative of SPMCIL PRESS RELEASE Sh. Pranab Mukherjee, Union Finance Minister inaugurated Satya Bharti School programme in Murshidabad on 5 th February 2011, in the presence of Mr.M.S.Rana CMD, Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd., MP of Berhampore and Murshidabad and co-founder of Bharti Foundation Mr. Rakesh Bharti Mittal. Inauguration ceremonies were held at Chanak and Dhalsa. Under this programme 5 schools are being constructed at Chanak, Patkaldanga, Naopara, Amarkunda and Dhalsa. These schools are funded and constructed by Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd. but will be run by Bharti Foundation. SPMCIL is a miniratna company of government of India and as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment it is constructing these school buildings and providing all requisite furniture and fixtures.spmcil is a Central Public Sector Undertaking has more than 14,000 employees located in the Units spread over at multiple locations in the country. The company has achieved growth of more than 25% in income and is making laudable attempt towards production of indigenous raw-material, research and development and automation of processes through ERP in addition to taking up projects under CSR. Bharti Foundation is a philanthropic organization of Airtel Bharti Group. Presently they are running more than 200 Primary Schools which are called Satya Bharti School and are operational across the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu These elementary schools will be providing quality education to more than 1,000 students of the remote villages in the District of Murshidabad. These Schools will work on sound fundamentals of the child and it provides free quality education to underprivileged children, with a special focus on the girl child, in the deepest rural pockets of the country. The schools would also lay emphasis on Computer-aided learning and the English language, in its effort to make children well equipped in skills required for employment at a later stage in life.

SPMCIL entered into a MoU with Bharti foundation whereby it was decided that 10 schools in rural areas of Murshidabad would be constructed and furnished by SPMCIL and it would be run by Bharti Foundation. THE SATYA BHARTI SCHOOL PROGRAM- AN OVERVIEW i. Bharti Foundation is a philanthropic organization of Airtel Bharti Group. Presently they are running more than 200 Primary Schools which are called Satya Bharti School and are operational across the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. ii. Foundation has planned to run 10 schools in Murshidabad. This education initiative supports the pursuit for excellence and aims to set benchmarks for quality education across the country. iii. Project of construction and furnishing of 10 Schools in Murshidabad will cost about Rs. 5 crores. These schools are being constructed by Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL). It is a Public Sector Undertaking of Government of India which has decided to support this initiative by spending about Rs.5 crores in constructing all school buildings and providing all requisite furniture and fixtures to run these schools. iv. Land has been identified for seven Schools where as land for other three schools are being identified. Out of these seven schools, SPMCIL has already started work at Chanak, Patkaldanga and Naopara. Work at Amritkunda and Dhalsa will also start in the coming week. v. The children tackled problems like taboos and superstitions, water harvesting, child marriages, illiteracy, drug abuse etc. through their campaigns in their own villages The community and Panchayats/ various departments (local bodies) have supported Bharti Schools in other States by Contribution of land, Monitoring school operation by daily/ surprise visits, Cooking of mid-day meal with raw materials, Supplying stationery for the students, Sponsoring mid-day meals, water tanks, road construction, etc. In Murshidabad also Panchayats and public in general have supported this initiative of opening schools. Rich History of Murshidabad Murshidabad has a very prestigious and old history in minting of coins. On the earliest available coins of Murshidabad, the mint town appears under its old name of Makhsusabad. The Mughal king Auragzeb earlier issued the silver rupee coins with the mint name Makhsusabad. In the 1705 the coins bear the new name of Murshidabad, so called after Murshid Quli Khan the then governor of Bengal. The coins of the following Mughal rulers are also known with the name Murshidabad. Shah Alam I, Farrukhsiyar, Shahjahan II, Muhammad Shah, Ahmad Shah, Alamgir II and Shah Alam II. The gold coins of Farrukhsiyar, Muhammad Shah, Shah Alam II have been found with the name Murshidabad. In the Bengal presidency the East India Company was for a long time obliged to send their bullion to be coined at the mints of Nawab of the province, which were at Decca, Patna and Murshidabad. In 1758 the Nawab of Bengal gave them permission to establish a mint of their own at Calcutta. So the first Calcutta mint was established in and probably was located in a building next to the old fort where the GPO (General Post Office) stands today. The mint used to produce coins with the name Murshidabad. The second Calcutta Mint was established with modern machinery brought in 1790 from England. It was located at the site Gillet Ship Building Establishment, which had been taken over by stamp and stationary committee in The coins issued from this mint continued to bear mint name Murshidabad. In March 1824 the foundation of third Calcutta Mint was laid on Strand Road and was opened for production from1 August This mint also issued the coins with mint name Murshidabad till Unfortunately, there is no trace of old mint building of Murshidabad. Subsequently minting started from Kolkata Mint located at New Alipore. This mint is now part of Security Printing and Minting Corporation of

4 India Limited (SPMCIL) which was set up to manage other four Mints, four Presses and one paper Mill, which were departmental units of Ministry of Finance. This Company started in 2006 with its headquarters at New Delhi. Company prints bank notes, stamp papers, postal items and mints all types of coins. SPMCIL SPMCIL is indebted to Murshidabad for such contribution towards minting of coin and therefore decided to do its bit in this historic town. The projects of setting up schools are part of this endeavor. The company's income in grew by 25.37% to Rs.3, crore from Rs.2, crore in the FY Profit after tax during the year increased to Rs crore from Rs crore during the previous year, thereby registering growth of 24.98%. The PAT per employee has increased to Rs lac as against Rs lac in the year resulting in an increase of 32.96%. There are about employees serving in this company. The excellent financial performance has been achieved by enhanced productivity achieved by optimum utilisation of manpower and machinery, re-engineering of production processes, redeployment of surplus manpower and reduction in waste, better inventory management and energy conservation. The company has met maximum of the MoU targets for and achieved Excellent rating. To tackle the problem of counterfeiting, Company is making attempts to produce indigenous raw material for the production of bank notes. Security ink called intaglio ink, used in printing of bank notes will now be produced by the company to meet its entire requirement. A security paper mill has also been set up in Mysore in joint venture with this company and subsidiary of RBI. This will lead to production of about 90% of the bank note paper in the country; hence imports would be considerably reduced. To bring out efficiency and transparency, fully computerized ERP system has been installed in the company. In the field of research and development, measures have been taken to introduce new technology and new features. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) A CSR policy was notified by the Company on and DPE guidelines on CSR are the basis for carrying forward the CSR initiatives. As per CSR policy, the different activities of public benefit may be handled by SPMCIL which includes; School Education, Health and family welfare, Up-liftment of weaker sections of Society, disaster management, Sports etc.

5 Activities undertaken: During the year an amount of Rs. 3 crores have been earmarked for expenses towards the CSR. Company has planned and is carrying forward the following initiatives: a) Prerna Scheme, through Jansankhya Sthirta Kosh Rs lakhs, Production of film for public awareness on population, through Jansankhya Sthirta Kosh Rs. 41 lakhs. b) Assistance to a school in Nashik, Maharashtra- Rs.15 lacs c) Project of 10 Schools in Murshidabad at a cost of about Rs. 5 crores. These schools are being constructed by a PSU civil works agency and it would be supervised by Jadhavpur University as independent supervision consultatnt.
