1 NATIONAL SCHEDULED CASTES FINANCE & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, DELHI A BRIEF REPORT ON CLEANLINESS DRIVE UNDERTAKEN BY EMPLOYEES OF NSFDC IN THE SLUM AREA (RAJIV CAMP), OPPOSITE CHITRA VIHAR, DELHI FROM 1 ST TO 15 TH APRIL, 2016 PROJECT OBJECTIVE: The objective of the project is to spread the message of awareness among the slum dwellers, that cleanliness is next to godliness, by way of sensitizing and educating the children, youth and aged people living in the slums area on various aspects of cleanliness and societal values. Organise medical camps in the slum areas and provide free health and medical care and assistance to the slum dwellers. SPONSORING ORGANISATIONS: National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation in association with Wockhardt Foundation organised cleanliness and hygiene awareness programmes and free medical camp in the slum area (Rajiv Camp) opposite ChitraVihar, Delhi. PROJECT DETAILS: 1. To begin with, a slum dwelling falling under JJ Cluster (Rajiv Camp) located opposite ChitraVihar, Delhi was identified. The Slum was established in the year 1980 with a total population of 6500 approximately, mostly comprising of migrants hailing from Bihar, UP, WB and MP. There are altogether 404 number of households in the slum. 2. Volunteers from NSFDC comprising of 44 Officers and staffs were divided into 4 teams, and each Team was headed by a Team Leader and 10 Team Members. A brief compilation of the various activities performed by the group members in the slum is mentioned as under: a) Interviewed people living in the slum areas, gathered their views about cleanliness, the condition they lived in, contribution of civic bodies and people themselves to keep the area clean. Organized a talk show with people walking on the lane/by roads and asked them to narrate their contribution to keep the slum and the city clean. b) Interacted with petty shopkeepers, pan sellers, barbers, cobblers, dhaba owners, tea sellers, vegetable vendors, hawkers and explained to them the importance of clean surrounding and personal hygiene. c) Announcement was made to people living in the slum to avoid use of plastic and polythene bags so as to reduce the quantity of garbage. Suggested people to store the garbage in dustbin so that it can be separated to make compost and manure. d) The Team Members purchased 5 to 6 large plastic buckets and placed them at strategic points in the slum under the care of some responsible persons among them. People in the area were then educated about the usage of these plastic bucket bins and were then encouraged to continuously use the bucket bin dustbin for throwing all types of garbage and waste. People were discouraged to throw waste in the open drains. e) The Team members made door to door campaign spreading the message of cleanliness and hygiene and counseled and educated house hold members on hygiene and the need for conversion of insanitary toilets to sanitary toilets. f) The Team members organized and assembled group of primary school students of the slums in the community hall. The Team leaders taught the school students the values of cleanliness and hygiene and were told to spread the message of hygiene and cleanliness learned by them to their family members, peers and school mates. After the end of the teaching session, sweets and biscuits were distributed the school children. g) Visited the office of the Municipal Corporation under whose jurisdiction the Slum falls and issues such as cleanliness/hygiene and acute problem of sanitation and drainage in the area and ways and means of tackling it on priority was seriously discussed. h) On request made by the Team Leaders, Sanitary Inspector personally visited the slum area during the campaign period and the Team members pointed out the particular spot which required immediate attention. He was also told to give a standing instruction to garbage pickup van person to daily park the van at one spot near the slum area where all the waste bin can be emptied. i) The Team members distribute pamphlets and hand bills on cleanliness and hygiene in Hindi among all slum dwellers.

3 4. Free Eye Camps: In association with Wockhardt Foundation a free eye camp was organised on 1 st and 11 th April, 2016 for the people living in the slum areas. Wockhardth Foundation had arranged an air-conditioned mobile check-up ambulance having state of the art equipment s and a well-qualified technician. Altogether, 274 patients lined up to avail free eye check-up, out of which 142 patients were given free sun glasses. Patients diagnosed with cataract related problem were advised to consult Government Hospitals for treatment. 5. Free Gynaecology consultation: In association with Wockhardt Foundation a free Gynaecology consultation was organised on 8 th and 12 th April, 2016 for the slum dwellers. Dr RukmaniDogra, Gynacologist was associated as Chief Consultant for the medical camp on behalf of Wockhardt Foundation. Bed and consultation room was arranged in the community hall for the check-up. Medicines was distributed free of cost to women patients. Altogether 29 female inhabitants of the slum in the age group of 15 to 70 years came for medical consultation. 6. Field Report :A door to door field survey-cum- awareness/sensitising programme was undertaken during the campaign period and data was collected from on the basis of sample questionnaire circulated to all the team members. Some of the findings as well as suggestions from slum dwellers are listed down as under: a) Majority of the slum dwellers are migrant labourers, petty shopkeepers, coblers, rickshaw pullers, street vendors, Govt. school students etc earning somewhere between Rs.5000/- to Rs.10,000/-. b) Majority complained of inadequate health care facility in Govt. Hospitals nearby and private hospitals are charging exorbitant fees for treatment, which they can t afford. c) Majority complained that there is nil or inadequate services from civic bodies regarding cleanliness and clearing of garbage. The garbage clearing van is hardly seen around the area and hence wastes are seen piling up in the drain, lane and streets. The residents of the slum had shown keenness to improve cleanliness in the area and suggested that the sanitary workers must be pressurized to visit the area regularly and collect garbage on daily basis. d) Majority complained that there is only one community toilet in the area operated by Sulabh International on payment Rs.100/- p.m. or Rs.2/- per visit and on an average each family has to shell out Rs.600/- for this purpose. The Toilets are closed at 12 midnight, as a result of which residents who like to free themselves during odd hours have to go in the open. Due to space crunch, the residents suggested that another floor may be got constructed to meet the rising demand. e) Almost all the residents of the slum took the pledge that they will keep the surrounding areas and streets clean and hygienic in the future. f) Almost all the residents of the slum agreed to spread the message of cleanliness and hygiene to friends, relatives and neighbours.

4 g) Majority of the residents of the slum interviewed agreed that such kind of cleanliness drive undertaken has been very fruitful and it be undertaken more frequently in the future. PHOTOGRAPHS OF SOME OF THE MAJOR EVENTS ARE ENCLOSED

5 Inauguration of the Cleanliness Drive Campaign on 01/04/2016 by CMD, NSFDC at JJ Cluster, ChitraVihar, Delhi, CMD, listening to elders and social activist on various issues and problems faced by the people living in the slum and CMD making a brief campaign on cleanliness and hygiene to the residents.
