1 Announcements and Opportunities Sunday, October 28, Michigan Ave. Cincinnati, OH knox.org Wi-Fi: Knox-Public Password: welcometoknox Celebrating and sharing ABUNDANCE at KNOX The Knox community adults and children this year will pack 2,700 sandwiches for St. Francis Seraph Ministries, 95 children s activity bags for IHN families, 60 snack bags for families and Bethany House, and 150 lunches for kids attending summer literacy camp at MEAC. Knox is abundantly giving to the community, and your financial support makes a difference like making these sandwiches! Commitment Sunday, the day we celebrate and commit to share out of a portion of our abundance, is November 18. Please prayerfully consider how you can give from your abundance to help feed others. Knox Coat Drive received over 100 donations! Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity. The coats will be distributed to the children and youth by the elders of Third Presbyterian Church during their Halloween Trunk n Treat on Saturday, October 27. All are welcome to attend.

3 CCM presents St. John Passion today J.S. Bach s glorious St. John Passion will be presented in the Knox Commons at 4:00pm today. The performance is by musicians from the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music. Admission is free. Sign up for Mission: Possible! Mission: Possible! Knox's annual half-day of service for and with our mission partners begins at 8:00am on Saturday, November 10. There are a wide range of ways to serve something for everyone of any age! Childcare is provided, too. Check out the details and sign up using the insert in today's bulletin, at the Michigan Avenue desk, or on-line at knox.org. Knox blood drive set for November 8 Did you know that last year s Knox blood drive collected enough blood to save nearly 100 lives? Now it s time to roll up our sleeves and do it again. The next drive will be in Knox Commons Thursday, November 8, from 2:00pm to 3:45pm, and again from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Our partners from Hoxworth Blood Center will do all the hard work, you just need to relax in a comfortable chair and eat cookies when you are done! Coffee & Conversation needs more hosts Coffee & Conversation, our caffeine-infused hour of conversation between services in the Social Hall, needs individuals, families or groups to help host. 4 Conversation, contemplation, action......are three words that can describe the journey of prayer. What is prayer? Does God really hear, talk back, always answer? As many people as we ask to respond to these questions, we may receive just as many answers. Such is the nature of the holy mystery called prayer. Join the Rev. Jana Reister Sunday November 4, 11, 18 from 10:00am-11:00am at Knox to explore the spiritual practice of prayer, our "need" for it, and to learn some ancient methods of prayer. Women s Fellowship to visit art museum In place of its monthly meeting, the Women s Fellowship will visit The Fabric of India exhibition at the Art Museum on Wednesday, November 14. The tour, guided by Peg Halberstadt and Barb Wagner, begins at 11:00am, and lunch may be purchased at the Museum restaurant 12:30pm. Lunch is limited to 20 people so sign up at knox.org or the Michigan Avenue lobby soon! A Tailgate for Mission set for November 3 A Tailgate for Mission will be in the Knox Observatory Avenue lot on Saturday, November 3, from 10:00am to noon, rain or shine. Fill up your trunk with supplies needed by mission partners like Third Church, the Madisonville Education and Assistance Center (MEAC), the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) and the Center for Respite Care, and we will unload it for you. For a list of needed items, go to knox.org or visit the Michigan Avenue Welcome Desk. Special opportunity: after we are done unloading cars, you are welcome to help take items to the IHN Day Center and tour that facility, clean closets and get a guided tour of this important mission supported by Knox.

5 Calling all ushers! Whether you are a veteran usher or would like to become part of an usher team that provides hospitality during worship services, mark your calendar and join us on Thursday, November 8 at 7:00pm for instruction in our Usher Ministry. We will meet in the Sanctuary for a refresher in the basics of ushering at Knox, including an review of emergency procedures led by our Faith Community Nurse, Pam Ward. We have an immediate need for ushers at both the 9:00am and 11:00am worship services no experience necessary! To learn more, please contact Mark Hageman at hagemanml@gmail.com. Faithful Citizenship continues next Tuesday In divided political times, how do we serve and reconcile our civic lives with our spiritual lives? This and other questions are among the topics at Faithful Citizenship: Morning Conversations about Spiritual and Civic Life, a faith formation class that will meet next Tuesday, October 30 and again on Tuesday, November 6 from 7:30am to 9:00am. Adam Fronczek and Bruce Petrie (a partner with Graydon Law Firm and an adjunct professor of constitutional law at UC and Miami) will lead. Classes will be at the Graydon Conference Space, 18 th floor, 312 Walnut Street (Scripps Building). Go to knox.org or call the church office to register. "Elder Wisdom Circle" with Rick Warm A few spots are open in a Rick Warm-led "Elder Wisdom Circle" and you are invited to attend. The Circle is a gathering of about a dozen people interested in exploring the ideas of wisdom, spirituality and aging. The circle meets on Mondays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Knox. 6 That All May Worship... Welcoming Those with Physical Disabilities Like others, people with physical disabilities fight stereotypes. The barriers people with disabilities face begin with people's attitudes, often rooted in misinformation and misunderstanding about what it's like to live with a physical disability. May we strive to see each other as whole just as we are, and as God does. Consider these myths and facts: MYTH: People with disabilities are brave and courageous. FACT: Living with a disability requires adaptation to a lifestyle. MYTH: Wheelchair use is confining; people who use wheelchairs are "wheelchair-bound." FACT: A wheelchair, like a bicycle or an automobile, is a personal assistive device that enables someone to get around. MYTH: Children should never ask people about their disabilities. FACT: Many children have a natural curiosity and may ask questions that some adults consider embarrassing. But scolding curious children may make them think that having a disability is "wrong" or "bad". Most people with disabilities won't mind answering a child's question. MYTH: The lives of people with disabilities are totally different from the lives of people without disabilities. FACT: People with disabilities go to school and church, get married, work, have families, do laundry, grocery shop, laugh and cry, pay taxes, and get angry, vote, plan and dream like everyone else. MYTH: People with disabilities need help from non-disabled people. FACT: Anyone may offer assistance, but most people with disabilities prefer to be responsible for themselves. 7 Knox members team up with Michigan church to help repair West Virginia homes Knox members Susan Esler- Skibo and her son Ben Skibo, Carolyn Hahne and Rolf Hahn teamed with 13 people from the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City (PCTC) to help repair homes in rural Rupert, West Virginia, a few weeks ago. The group painted a home in which the restoration of a house was nearly complete; built a porch on another home and constructed a roof over yet another porch. They slept and ate at Ronceverte Presbyterian Church in Ronceverte, WVA where the small congregation there had invested thousands of dollars to upgrade the bathrooms and showers in the church basement in preparation for hosting many of the 84 work groups who visited in the past year. Youth will Trick or MEAC A Halloween event AND a mission event? Yes! The Knox Youth Group this evening will go door-todoor in Hyde Park to gather canned goods for the Madisonville Education and Assistance Center (MEAC). Everyone is encouraged to dress up because there WILL be prizes for the best costumes!
