3 October 30 th, 2016 Message: Learning Loyalty Big Idea: Loyalty demands a willingness to deal with differences and failure! Passage: Nehemiah 13 Speaker: Pastor Scott Hill Dealing with compromised companions (Nehemiah 13:1-9) O.T. foreigner and N.T. unbeliever (Nehemiah 13:1, Ephesians 5:5-7) Illegitimate personal benefits corrected (Nehemiah 13:7, Ephesians 5:11) Dealing with financial failure (Nehemiah 13:10-14) Will I be honest with myself? (Nehemiah 13:10-11) O.T. tithing and N.T. generous giving (Nehemiah 13:12, 2 Corinthians 9:7-8) Am I reliable and trusting God? (Nehemiah 13:13-14, 1 Corinthians 4:2) Dealing with unbelief (Nehemiah 13:15-22) Profaning the Sabbath brings God s wrath (Nehemiah 13:18) O.T. Sabbath and N.T. Sabbath-rest (Hebrews 4:3, 9-11) The curse of adding works to salvation (Galatians 1:8, 2:21-3:5) Dealing with God s language (Nehemiah 13:23-31) Old Testament Vs. New Testament (Nehemiah 13;23, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18) We need to understand spiritual language (Nehemiah 13:24, 1 Corinthians 2:12-13) Use it or loose it! (Hebrews 5:11-14) Charles Swindoll who never forgot Dr. Art Glasser s comment that passivity is the enemy, offers some Radical solutions for radical problems in his book Hand Me Another Brick: Nehemiah faced the wrong head-on If you have a problem in your church, your business, your home anywhere in your life face it head- on. Don t skirt it. Sure, it will be painful, but deal with it. Start today. Nehemiah dealt with the wrong severely Our lives must not be politically swayed by the applause or wishes of the public it s hard to stand against wrong and not appear to be a crotchety old crank. But Nehemiah stood firm. He didn t pick a fight; he just dealt with sin severely. Nehemiah worked toward a permanent correction. It s not enough just to condemn the wrong. You must do something to correct it Whenever God says, Don t do this, He backs it up with, Do that instead. God always balances a negative with a positive. Nehemiah always followed up the wrong with a prayer. When Nehemiah had done all that he could, he fell before God and said, Oh, God, bless every one of these efforts. Give me direction and more wisdom and guidance. Remember me as I have done all I can to correct the wrong. Honor Yourself as I stand alone.
4 DISCUSSION GUIDE Galatians 3:1-14 Ice Breaker: During your years of dating were you ever dropped like a hot potato and how did that make you feel? 1. Do you think it is legitimate for Paul to refer to the Galatians as foolish Galatians in light of Matthew 5:22? Compare this to God calling someone a fool in Luke 12: When do you feel most foolish in your relationship with God? When should be feel foolish according to this passage? 3. What do you think it means to be bewitched? What does Paul s question in verse 2 suggest he meant by being bewitched? 4. Why would some people think we receive the Spirit when we obey God s standards or do good deeds to please God and others? 5. How does Paul describe their foolish action in verse 3? What does it mean to begin by the Spirit and be perfected by the flesh? 6. How does Paul describe the person that wants to be justified (counted righteous) by keeping the Law in 5:4? 7. What do you think is the suffering he refers to in verse 4? (Compare 5:10-12) 8. How was Abraham counted as righteous before God? Who are the true sons of Abraham? 9. What does anyone have to do to be blessed along with Abraham? Trunk or Treat Tomorrow, October 31st 6:00 7:30 p.m. Shamrock House Parking Lot ALL families with children are invited! Come dressed up in your favorite fun costume! Enjoy a bounce house, candy and food! You can still sign up today to volunteer. Candy donations are also welcome. What is Trunk or Treat? Trunk or Treat, is a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween. This is our opportunity as a church to reach the families in our neighborhood. The event will be held in Shamrock house grass parking lot. Volunteers park their cars together and open their trunks to reveal fall-themed decorations, games and treats for the children. Children can walk from trunk to trunk to look at the decorations, play games and receive candy and treats. This event provides a safe family environment for trick-or-treaters of all ages. Fun costumes are welcome. Flyers are available in the foyer to invite family and friends.
