1 Trinity Episcopal Church 218 East Benton Street Aurora, Il Serving Aurora's Faithful since 1849 Volume 12,, Issue 9 (630) October 2012 Chireen DeKing Reports Porktoberfest: We had a large crowd here for Trinity's first Porktoberfest. We served approximately 85 plates and sold around 15 lbs of pulled pork. Javier's room-mate who happens to be a MC for Trivia added a whole lot of fun for everyone. The Palmquist table were the champions taking home the grand prize. Javier brought what seemed to be 10 people to the event and added much to the evening. Our onsite bartender Pat Wilson served refreshments to the crowd and kept everyone hydrated. Linda and Rob ran the kitchen along with Jean and the Bloggs insuring great looking plates of pulled pork sandwiches, chips, coleslaw and applesauce, I must tip my hat off to Kimberly and Signe for being the waitresses and doing a bang up job, they were very busy and the crowd loved them. A few of the ladies made home made desserts that were From the Senior Warden flying off the dessert table as soon as they were put out there. A special thank you to Michael for coordinating the event with myself in setting up the tables and many other duties. Thanks to all the parishioners who purchased tickets and came to this event. We also had many walk ins from the sign outside so possibly we might see these people some Sunday. Every table was full and the crowd seemed to be having a great time!! As we all know their is no I in team and this is what this event represented. We also had a jar full of pretzel guessing game which Dick Blogg won with an answer only 1 away from the exact number. Funny thing about this was Gale had given the jar to church sometime ago (I'm sure hoping never to see it again) only to get it back. The ladies hold a Girls Goofy Gift exchange in December, I know I'm not picking What a delight Trinity is! Pet Blessings, pulled pork fundraiser with a terrific trivia contest, All Saints Day coming next week and the baptism of our own Charlotte Rubis on November 11th! Our children will be the servers at this joyous occasion! My favorite Holiday, Thanksgiving, is quickly approaching; then on to Advent and the birth of our Lord. Such a special place, such won- a present in the shape of that jar, lol. If I have forgotten anyone I apologize but once again thanks to all for a great success!!!!! St Margaret's Guild: At the October St Margaret's meeting we honored Mary Ellyn Herget. She has resigned from being treasurer after multiple decades, yes I said multiple decades. Most people take on a job for a few years but this woman held her position for many. It's people like her at Trinity which has made this church the special place it is. The dedication of our senior parishioners is something I personally have so much respect and admiration for. Our gift to her was a birthday Angel which is what she is to us. Thanks again Mrs. Herget for your many many years of work and dedication. derful people, Inside this issue: Chireen (Cont) Parish Notes Book Review Financial update Recipe Book Review (Cont) A list to live by The Day of the Dead Page 2 Pg 3 Pg 4 Parish Notes (Cont) Pg 5 Special points of interest: * Porktoberfest was a huge success! We all love coffee hours after church because it gives us the time after church to visit with our friends, touch base and generally just be with the people we share peace, prayer and altar with. When a person signs up for coffee hour it can be as simple as donut holes or if you wish a little more. I had a conversation with Michael regarding the responsibility this job entails. It is the job of the the coffee hour team to make the coffee, set up and clean up afterwards, however, Michael generally starts the coffee and IF their is a community worker they will assist in setting up and cleaning up after-wards. We all know what happens when we assume so please check with Michael when you arrive on Sunday morning and if Michael is not down there Happy coffee making!!!! (Thanks to Chireen for these terrific articles!) Parish Notes Parish Notes: Funeral Services were held for Marion Rasey on October 13th at Healy Chapel. Steve and Lela Lowe made a donation to the Sandwich Board Thank you! Many thanks to Red Lobster of Naperville which continues to donate food every week and recently donated a kitchen s worth of plates, bowls and platters! As always we are accepting the donations of aluminum cans, burnt out CFL bulbs and batteries. Help us keep our environment clean! Lay Eucharistic Minister Training: will be held shortly. A lay Eucharistic Minister visits our parishioners who are unable to attend a regular Sunday service. Two people go out to take communion to our shutins. This is a very wonderful service. If you are interested in further details, please call the Church Office so that we can let you know when there will be a training. All Saints Day is November 4th. if would like to remember a loved one, please fill out the sheet included with the Sunday bulletin or call the office to be printed in the bulletin. All names need to be received by October 31. Also, A Review of Deacon Dolan s New Book The Black Dog Publisher: Signalman Publishing ISBN-13: My thoughts: For many Christians and non Christians alike, being victorious is typically overcoming an addiction such as alcohol, drugs or even pornography for i.e. In his latest book 'The Black Dog' Rev. John R. Dolan bares his soul as he personally recount his own battle with depression and most important his ultimate victory over this mental illness. It is important to know that just as insidious as any other disease, such illness permeates family life, career, self image and even faith. Describing his own bouts with depression or the Black Dog, British born author John R. Dolan graphically describes his lifelong battle with this problem which too many still consider taboo. Compassion or understanding is often non existing for those who struggle sometime all their lives, with this debilitating condition. But it is a real threat and as the author tells us, even loved ones are often affected by these issues. Through his own experience Reverend John R. Dolan

Book Review (Cont) provides readers with tremendous insight into the mind of the depressed, identifying how and why their reasoning is so affected by mere events and circumstances. Readers will feel the author's faith throughout his ordeal, his unmistakable love for Jesus and his love for a wonderful family who stood by him. He credits their loving support as well as those of friends and his family pastor for this victory! Well written, easily understood and abundantly illustrated, you will discover one man's journey through a very real world of depression and like him, experience hope and love when you place your life in the hands of your Savior! It bespoke of courage from someone who has gone through it before you! Absolutely a must read for anyone who is suffering from depression and their loved ones. The message is clearly there: It is okay to feel such, Mix together the first 4 ingredients. Sift the flour, salt and soda together. Stir into first mixture. Add Heath bar bits; blend. Drop by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on a greased sheet. Bake in a 375 oven fo4 10 minyou are not alone and there is help out there! A great discussion opener and an excellent addition to any personal or social (church) library! (Beacon News, August 22, 2002) The Day of the Dead More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully to eradicate. A ritual known today as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The ritual is celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of the United States. Celebrations are held each year in Mesa, Chandler, Guadalupe and at Arizona State University. Although the ritual has since been merged with Catholic theology, it still maintains the basic principles of the Aztec ritual, such as the use of skulls. Today, people don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives. The wooden skulls are also placed on altars that are dedicated to the dead. Sugar skulls, made with the names of the dead person on the forehead, are eaten by a relative or friend, according to Mary J. Adrade, who has written three books on the ritual. The Aztecs and other Meso- American civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. The skulls were used to honor the dead, whom the Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations believed came back to visit during the month long ritual. Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake. "The pre-hispanic people honored duality as being dynamic," said Christina Gonzalez, senior lecturer on Hispanic issues at Arizona State University. "They didn't separate death from pain, wealth from poverty like they did in Western cultures." However, the Spaniards considered the ritual to be sacrilegious. They perceived the indigenous people to be barbaric and pagan. In their attempts to convert them to Catholicism, the Spaniards tried to kill the ritual. But like the old Aztec spirits, the ritual refused to die. To make the ritual more Christian, the Spaniards moved it so it coincided with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (Nov. 1 and 2), which is when it is celebrated today. Festivities were presided over by the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The goddess, known as "Lady of the Dead," was believed to have died at birth.
