1 Trinity Episcopal Church 218 East Benton Street Aurora, Il Serving Aurora a Faithful since 1849 Volume 12, Issue 4 (630) April 2012 From the Senior Warden Inside this issue: As I sit down to write this, I am anxiously awaiting my departure in the morning to Long Beach, California for an IndyCar race. It s my annual pilgrimage to the land of the Angels! New cars and engines this year it should be spectacular! But it will pale in comparison to the miracle of Holy Week this year! Palm Sunday, we marched and entered the Temple, carrying torches that Fr. Rosa found in the crawlway in the basement and that Michael Walker refurbished. It continued with a wonderful Agape dinner and a completely moving service of Holy Communion that included hand washing and the anointing of the hands with oil. I cried. Good Friday, I spent a couple of hours in the Chapel for the Easter vigil and then had the pleasure of doing the Children s Stations of the Cross. Only two kids, but we had 7 adults too! Easter was truly magnificent! We began with the ceremonial lighting of the Pascal Candle using prayers from The great Vigil of Easter. From the Pascal Candle we lit the torches from the Palm Sunday Procession, the service candles and then finally the Sanctus Light to symbolize the return of the risen Jesus to the Church! Deacon Dolan read the Gospel and his Homily recounted his personal miracle of having a person he was giving last rights to, awake from his coma and the resultant freeing of his, Reverend Dolan s troubled spirit. Thanks to Chireen for the lovely coffee hour! It was truly a magical, mystical and Holy week. For a whole lot of pictures of the weeks services go to our Facebook Group Page at groups/ / I was saddened yesterday to hear of the death of our dear friend and long time Trinity supporter Mona Knuth had passed away on Monday, April 9th, May light perpetual shine upon her. I also heard today that Mary Carey, a past member of Trinity and the painter of beautiful portraits of Trinity, suffered a stroke this last weekend. May her recovery be complete and speedy. Easter Lillies 2 From the Junior Warden (Continued) Theresa goes to Washington 2 Financial Snapshot 3 A Recipe and a recycling request! 2,5 Parish Notes 2,3, 5 Building and Grounds Earth Day 3 4 From the Junior Warden At the beginning of the year we distributed Pence Pigs during the annual meeting. And the challenge was underway. I've noticed one of the banks out during our weekly fellowship after church; as of a few weeks ago that bank had collected a little under $74.00! The purpose for collecting our change is to chip away at our loan against the Endowment Fund. During the April Vestry meeting a group of us were discussing the pence pigs and how we're doing with them. To date I've collected $12.56 which is good for me since I'm a debit card person. But I can do better. So I pose this question to all of you, if you have a pence pig, how are you doing collecting your change? And if you don't Special points of interest: Don t forget our church picnic at Chireen s house on June 3rd, Check out our website! New blog, a guestbook, a full calendar, Sermons, prayer list and more! Pence Pigs; We re saving our change to reduce our loan which is currently at $ any help you can give is much appreciated! Don t forget! We re-cycle toner cartridges, CFC light bulbs and small batteries at the Church
2 Page 2 Volume 12 issue 4 From the Junior Warden (Continued) have a pence pig and would like one, please let me know. I have some extras and can definitely get more. We also thought it would be a great idea to set a goal for our congregation of $1,000 in change by our next Annual Meeting in January, I think this is achievable! When I've collected change on my own I can own I can easily save $100 without even trying. If ten of us do the same our goal will have been made! Bring your pigs in at any time but I propose we all bring in our pence pigs at our Opening Service after the summer to have them emptied and tallied to see how far we are towards making our goal, with a final count in January. In the meantime, keep saving the change or drop a few cents into the bank during coffee hour. Keep the momentum going and we'll not only meet but exceed our goal in no time. Our pennies are adding up! Parish Notes Sandwich Board donations by: The Fabric of America Fund (BP) from Debbie Abner's recommendation. Debbie works for BP. In a letter from the Fund; "your organization has made a positive contribution. We also support the groups that make up the fabric of America: organizations across the US that work to improve people's lives. The Fabric of America Fund considers contributions to organizanizations recommended by BP employees. We are pleased you have been chosen for a grant through this program." Thanks, Debbie! A donation was made by Deacon Steve and Lela. Thanks to you. Your continued support has made those less fortunate continue to have a healthy meal each Thursday. Currently we have served 1,836 this year. Blessings! BORN: Charlotte Amelia Rubis on April 12th in Aurora. She is the daughter of Kimberly and Tim, and siblings: Hannah, Garrett and James. Charlotte weighed in at 8# 7oz. and was 21" long. Bless this child and preserve her life; receive her and enable her to receive you; Theresa Herget s Students go to Washington Over spring break, Theresa Herget shepherded six of her top students to our nation s capital. For never having been to D.C., or out of Chicago and on a plane, the kids stepped it up and took on D.C. like champs. They hit the ground running as soon as they landed and never took a break. The kids met with executives and professionals from the United Nations Foundation, GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition - part of the BIll & Melinda Gates Foundation), World Bank and Microsoft. They met with (and shadowed) people with whom adults would be nervous to meet, but got over their nerves and were polite, professional and inquisitive. They also visited the White House, Georgetown and the embassies. From trying Ethiopian food to talking about technology with complete strangers, the (Cont p 5)

Compare this to our average expense for the same period for the last 4 years of $5,510. Our new insurance coverage began. Same coverage, Thousands less expense. We renegotiated our Telephone rates $15 less a month and an unknown savings by not having to pay taxes. This year s audit team is Tom Herget and David Bullis. Please contact them if you have any financial concerns. Thanks to the Estate of our dearly loved Lucile Kane, our loan balance has dropped to $51,643. May she rest in peace. A Recipe from our Cookbook NUT BREAD 1 egg 2 scant cups flour 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon soda Dash of salt 1 cup nut meats Mix buttermilk, sugar and egg. Sift flour salt and sugar and add to the above mixture. Add nuts. Bake slowly (325 degrees for one full hour) Use two tins (4 by 7 1/2 by 2) or 1 loaf size (6 1/4 by 9 1/4 by 3 inches). Grease tins generously before baking. Very nice to serve with a salad. Bea Garrison. Trinity s St. Mary and St. Margaret s Cookbook from the early 60s Whatever you ask for in prayer believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 Parish Notes (Cont) Coffee Hour We all love coffee hour and the chance that it gives us to chat with our fellow parishoners, enjoy a cup of coffee and a light snack. Not everyone can join us in the parish hall at the same time due to changing choir and clergy attire and attending to the altar. If the person hosting coffee hour could wait the extra minutes until all parishoners were available, I think it would be appreciated. We on vestry didn't think waiting approximately 10 minutes would cause a problem. Coffee would be available immediately after the service as always. The vestry hopes everyone understands this request. The Vestry Keeping God People Safe Level II is scheduled for April 27 from 9-noon. This is a requirement from our Diocese for all people that are involved on one to one meetings with adults. If you are interested in becoming a LEM Lay Eucharistic Minister, this is a must. A LEM goes out and takes communion to those who are unable to attend Sunday Services. This helps our parishioners feel connected to all of us. I have found this to be very rewarding and a spiritual journey, We need more people to be trained. Won t you join me?
4 Page 4 Volume 12 issue 4 Parish Notes (Cont) This year's church picnic will be held June 3rd at 12:00. Brian and Chireen have offered their home to host this event. Burgers (minus pink slime) and Brats will be provided along with plates, napkins, and silverware. Please bring your favorite beverage ( ice in coolers will be provided) a dish to pass and a lawn chair. Bring your swimsuit and take a dip if weather permits. Please rsvp Chireen at if you will be attending by May 20th and she will give the count to all who are preparing a dish. Hope to see you there!!! DIED: Mona Knuth died on April 9th. She was a life-long member of Trinity having served on the Altar Guild and as Secretary for St. Margaret's Guild. Mona was 99 years old. Fr. Rosa officiated at her memorial service on April 13th. Memorials in her memory may be directed to Trinity Endowment Fund. May she rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon her. Amen. Altar Guild: Thank you to all that contributed for the Easter flowers. Pat Wilson, Directoress Ailing; Former parishioner, Mary Carey Kennedy has recently suffered two strokes but is doing well and in in rehab at Centegrece Hospital McHenry, 5201 Medical Center Dr., McHenry, Il She is in room 641 #2 Buildings and Grounds We give you thanks, most gracious God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; for the richness of mountains, plains, and rivers; for the songs of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We praise you for these good gifts, and pray that we may safeguard them for our posterity. BCP pg 840 The Building and Grounds Committee met on April 10th, 2012 to develop/update our list of projects to be attacked in the upcoming months. Among the projects to be undertaken are; a) the cleaning of the fans in the Church, b) the repair of the water leak in the kitchen, c) the repair of a hole in the wall in the chapel, d) Installation of a railing on the outside steps leading into the Parish Hall, e) repairing the grass in the memorial garden, f) Addressing the dead tree issue in the garden, g) repairing and polishing the candle snuffers, g) replacing all the toilet flushers with water saver flush units. Large projects we still need to address; a) cracks in the plaster in the Church, b) the parish hall floor, c) replacement of the blower motor on the organ and cutting some of the pipes back to ease tuning., d) trimming the tree in the parking lot, e) repairing the holes in the parking lot and making a new sign for the outside Marquee. Earth Day 2012 The nation celebrates Earth Day on April 22nd each year. I would like to thank Kimberly for her stewardship of Trinity s Green team, which has been instrumental in bringing a heightened awareness of environmental issues to the congregation here at Trinity. We have had great success reducing our carbon footprint, by using more efficient light bulbs, repairing our windows, installing an industrial washing machine, and insulating and installing an EnergyStar approved heating unit in the Apartment. Some of the feedback we received from last month s survey about how people have changed their habits due to the influence of the Green Team have been ; riding my bike or walking when possible, using energy efficient light bulbs, increasing recycling efforts, not using paper products and plastic water bottles, making their own soap, getting active on environmental issues, starting recycling of light bulbs, toner cartridges and batteries at Church. We have also found that being green isn t so easy at times. It has been a struggle to get all the contributing Churches that staff the Sandwich Board to use the dish washer paper is soooo easy! Help us God as we try to save our world!

Theresa Herget s students go to Washington students embraced trying/ doing new things throughout the entire time in D.C. The best part was watching them bond together and talk about what they were learning. There were lots of "oohs and ahhs," smiles, and laughs. The students were Adam Kint, Jakarra Jenkins, Kennedy Ramirez, Vakendra Edwards, Martha Zuniga and Billy Clark, all from Theresa s class at Chicago Academy of Advanced Tech nology. They represented their school well.
