2 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him Colossians 2:6 We received Jesus by faith faith through which we surrendered our lives to Him as Savior and Lord. The day of our salvation was the day we gave our lives to Him to cleanse us of the sin that separated us from God and to lead our lives as our Lord from that day onward into eternal life with Him. Paul is telling us to live our lives each day with this same attitude of surrender and the same level of commitment we had on the day we understood our great need for Him and gave our burdened and condemned lives to Him. To this point Paul said, I die daily. (1 Cor 15:31) Everyday, Paul surrendered his life anew to Jesus, dying to his own will and desires and seeking to follow Jesus lead in all things great and small throughout the day. In Col 2:6 Paul uses the phrase walk in Him. The Greek word here for walk is peripateō, which has the meaning to tread down all around. Paul understood that he was to follow Jesus all around in all things throughout the day just as if Jesus were with him leading him down a path. When I was a kid we liked to swing on grape vines in the woods. You could tell where the good vines were because the paths to them were so packed down by daily use that nothing would grow on them. When a vine broke and wasn t good for swinging anymore you could tell by the path. It was no longer well-travelled and became overgrown from lack of use. The path of following Jesus is to be a well-worn, trod-down path just as the path of the world had been for us before we knew Him. That worldly path of our old broken life is to be like the path to the broken vine, growing over more and more each day from lack of use. A life that walks in Jesus is a life led by Jesus and becomes a life that lives in Jesus, making His life and His will our preferred home. When Jesus calls us to follow Him, He wants us to follow Him in all things for all of our days into eternity. I ll be the first to admit this is not always easy and not always fun, but it is always good. (Hey, not be deceived, the path of the world certainly is not always easy or fun, either!) Paul follows in Colossians 2:7 with the good that comes by making Jesus our well-worn path. He will root within us a deep foundation of faith that He will continually build up layer by layer through the instruction of His word into a faith that is firmly established, just as mighty fortress city rises up and is established against all that could possibly come against it. Such a faith, which He builds up in us as we daily trod down all around with Him, blesses our souls and fills our hearts with joy until we are overflowing with gratitude. Paul knew this by experience because this is the life he committed himself to live with Jesus. How is your path with Jesus looking? Pastor Dan Are you afraid of the dark? I would guess that most of us were, at some small age, afraid of the dark. How about now? Does darkness bother you now? I would have to admit that I do not like darkness!! As a rational adult I overcome my uncomfortableness by reason and will power, but I still dislike the dark. When deer hunting season comes around every year I know I will have to get up early and go into the woods in the dark. That is the part of deer hunting I don t like. The woods are on our farm; I have in the past, and will in the future, enjoy walking in them in the daylight!! I know every path, every big tree, every ditch, and every hill. But in the dark, they all seem to take on a new somewhat threatening aspect. As I said, my fear is overcome by knowledge (reason) and will power. Now let s take this to a spiritual level. What does darkness represent? John 1:4-5 tells us that Jesus is the Light; the giver of life. The passage says Jesus came to shine in the darkness. Darkness is the absence of God. Maybe that is why I still dislike darkness!! The absence of God is the definition of evil. Jesus came to give us life by shining His light into our lives and conquering the evil that is in our nature. Our nature is darkness. Sin separates us from God and that is the definition of darkness. Darkness is overcome when we ask Jesus to bring His Light into our lives. It is our choice: live in darkness and fear or live in the saving Light of the Lord Jesus. Wow!! What a reason for us to continually worship in all of our days, not just on Sunday. By my knowledge of, and my willful decision to accept, the Light of Jesus, I have escaped the darkness that brings fear and dread of the future. Thank You, Jesus. Pastor Mike ASSOCIATIONAL HYMN SING AT Colony Flea Market On July 2 nd at 7:00 P.M. Miss a Sunday at church? Check our website firstbaptistmemphis.com for sermons, announcements & events. You can also find us on Facebook to keep you informed.

3 Notes From the Church Office The office has been busy this time of year as Nancy and I see lots of ministry taking place around the church office. We are so glad that Pastor Josh has arrived and we notice he has begun working on Vacation Bible School and has already had a couple of meetings in preparation for VBS with many of our congregation volunteering to help. The VBS theme is God of Wonders and Moses has already made an appearance to introduce the VBS study. We can t wait to see what the Lord does through our VBS. You might see a little bit of Egypt around the church as we move toward the end of July and VBS begins. Be on the lookout for burning bushes and parting waters! Personally, my favorite story is of baby Moses in the floating basket. We are seeing Pastor Dan preparing for camps out at Camp Leeper and he and many of our workers have been going out to the camp to begin getting ready for the summer camps. Pastor Mike has been working with new people who have volunteered to help with the sound and video ministry for our services. We have a wonderful church family that loves to serve and that is a great blessing! The Associational Hymn Sing will be at Colony Flea Market on July 2, at 7 PM. Sometimes it rains on the tin roof and sometimes the fan is on high but it is a good experience and reminds me of how people must have worshiped in times past. We will be having the Care Center Service at 2:30 PM on July 8 and that same evening at 6:30 is the Vespers Service at the fair. Girls Camp will begin July 9, followed by Boys Camp on June 16, so be praying for these important ministries to children. Check our weekly bulletin, newsletter, Facebook, for more information. Our website has applications and information about camps or you can come by the office and pick up the forms. As you can see, with our camps and VBS we have a month of ministry to children. Pray that God will be with the leaders and workers as they serve in our camps and VBS. If you want to help in any of these ministries, call the church office and we can plug you in to the person to contact. If you cannot be there, you can still help by praying. Pray for the souls of our children. We must keep sharing the Word of God with the next generation. Pray that God will make His presence known to our children that they might accept Him as Savior and Lord. Pray that God will raise up a new generation of believers within these children that they will know and experience God s presence and power in their lives and that they in turn will lead many to Christ. We are excited to see and hear what God does in our camps and VBS this year. Our God is and awesome God! Pam Blaine On June 12 th, fifteen members of the Joy Group and the Young at Heart went to Kirksville for a day of fun and fellowship. Our first stop was at the A. T. Still Museum where we had a guide take us on a tour of the museum. This was very interesting learning how Dr. Still started the school of young doctors so many years ago. We also toured the outside, where they had plants growing and the guide told us what each plant was used for. We ate lunch at 54 Diner. This is becoming a good place to eat for the Joy Group as they offer a variety of food from breakfast to lunch. After lunch we toured the Missouri Department of Conservation building south of Kirksville. There is lots to see there and a very interesting time was enjoyed by all. Our next meeting will be July 10 th at Noon at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall where we will enjoy a chicken dinner. The fried chicken will be furnished and everyone else is asked to bring the side dishes or dessert to complete the meal. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME Adrianna Briggs

4 I would like to personally thank the church and the Memphis community for a warm welcome! The most important thing I can request right now is prayer that the Lord uses the ministries that I am blessed to lead to bring glorification to His name and encouragement to His body. The student ministry is currently gearing up for VBS Our topic this year is centered around the "God of Wonders" and we will spend VBS week walking through a few of the stories of Moses. We will work through Moses' birth, the circumstances surrounding his exit from Egypt, the burning bush, the ten plagues, and we will end the week learning about the Red Sea crossing. We look forward to you joining us as volunteers, students, and prayer partners for this ministry outreach. Carry In Fellowship Meal Pastor Josh We are celebrating the arrival of the Blacks to serve in Memphis on July 22, immediately following morning worship. The Blacks are from Easley, SC. Josh joins the ministry team at First Baptist after serving as a bi-vocational youth pastor for the last seven years. He is originally from Easley, SC and is married to Chasity. Together they have two boys, Jericho and Elijah. Prior to answering God's call to ministry and while working as a bi-vocational pastor, Josh has worked with students in varying capacities from public school teaching to mentoring and sports coaching. Chasity is a first grade teacher and a vital part to Josh's ministry calling. Josh and Chasity both met while attending North Greenville University to earn their degrees. Josh holds a Bachelor of Business and Master of Ministry degrees while Chasity holds a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Master of Education degrees. Vacation Bible School July 30-August 3, 2018 Ages 4-4 th Grade 5:15 7:30 PM Camp Leeper News Girls Camp July 9-13 Boys Camp July Ages 8-8 th Grade Josh has a passion for the spiritual development of youth and a heart to teach discipleship to students. He enjoys hiking, Clemson sports, football, coaching softball, reading, and video games. Please welcome the Blacks and introduce yourself if you haven t had a chance to yet. We are praising God that their family is here and can t wait to see what God has planned while they are serving our Church.

5 FAIR VESPERS SERVICE Sunday, July 8 at 7:00 PM Scotland County Fairgrounds Free Admission Renewed Quartet will be with us that night. Plan to attend this event and invite you neighbors and friends to kick off the county fair for the Lord. Hospitality News -Church Hostess Ellen Aylward The mission of the FBC Hospitality Team is to demonstrate Christ's love through serving and ministering to the body of believers and to strangers. We aim to do this by cultivating an environment full of servanthood and by encouraging fellowship. Providing a spiritual center of food and fellowship where all are welcome. Ultimately, the aim is to serve others and give them all that we have in order to make them feel comfortable, encouraged, and loved. The Hospitality Team supports all ministries of the Church. The responsibilities of the quarterly committees are to serve at the social functions of the church, such as receptions, funeral dinners, quarterly Sunday dinners and other social activities that may be scheduled. The quarterly chairman and co-chairman will contact committee members when help is needed. Committees shall clean and check the kitchen at the beginning of each quarter. The church will not host bridal or baby showers, but any individual or group who wishes to host may use the church facilities for this purpose. Any event may be scheduled on the church calendar and sponsored by individuals or groups as long as the event meets the guidelines of the church. The quarterly kitchen committees will be available to help with the events. For the current quarter which includes the months June, July and August we have: Chairman Co-Chairman Denice Blaine Jan Blake These two get the job done and done right!!! See them for all your hospitality needs for the quarter.
