1 THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ILLUMINATOR Ye are the LIGHT of the world. Matthew 5:14 VOL. 2 More than forty times the word WARN is used in scripture. Thirteen of them are found in two chapters in Ezekiel, chapters 3 & 33. Ezekiel is appointed as a watchman and he pens God s discourse about warning people the wicked and the righteous and what happens if he fails to warn people of if they fail to listen to the warning. What happens when we fail to listen to warnings in our lives on our ship or fail to prepare for what is coming? The notorious ship RMS Titanic, which sunk on April 15, 1912, apparently ignored warnings about dangerous icebergs and it cost them 1500 lives. This Sunday I will continue my sermon series, ALL ABOARD, with the message about warnings called Batten Down. What does Batten Down mean? The earliest reference to this practice is in William Falconer s An Universal Dictionary of the Marine, 1769; it comes from the phrase, batten down the hatches. When bad weather was imminent, the hatches for ventilation on the lower sides of the ship were covered with tarpaulin and the covering was edged with wooden strips, known as battens, to prevent it from blowing off. Sailors called this battening down. Today we use this phrase to mean prepare for a difficult situation and prepare for trouble. Ships and their crews have elaborate warning systems. Storms and dangerous waters are inevitable. Its not a matter of if but when will I go through a storm? But, what if the warnings are not heeded? All of us will face storms in life and some of them can be terrible. The question is, are you prepared for trouble? What are some of the warnings we are given in scripture even in life? Do we listen to them and take action? This Sunday we will look at a great shipwreck story right from the pages of the Bible a while chapter devoted to this storm at sea. Did they heed the warnings given? Did they survive? What can we learn from God s word about facing the storms in our lives? When the weather gets rough, will you know ow to batten down the hatches? In His Service, Pastor Tony Since the beginning of Operation Christmas Child in 1993, countless individuals have shared their passion for the project and inspired families, groups, and churches to pack shoebox gifts. These project leaders create opportunities for people across the United States to touch the lives of children and families around the world and to bring hope through the Good News of Jesus Christ. We will collect bar soap, washcloths and flashlights for the month of October. You may also make a donation by making your check payable to First Baptist Church and write Shoeboxes on the memo line. If you have any questions, contact Lee Adams at or her at Lee.Adams@uky.edu. As always we appreciate your support in this ministry of our church.
3 During Children s Church this past Sunday, we did an emulsion experiment with oil and water. The kids witnessed how shaking the oil and water together results in a mixture that does not last very long; within ten seconds our ingredients were almost completely separated again. This reminds me of the struggle that Paul had with the churches in Galatia (some of us have been studying Galatians in Sunday School). After preaching the gospel in the region, and having many persons convert to Christianity, Paul received word that his reputation was being attacked by a group of Jewish Christians who were trying to convince the Gentile Christians that they must follow Jewish law if they were to be saved (this group of Jewish Christians would become known as Judaizers). Jews and Gentiles had a long history of being like oil and water, and this was tearing apart what had been healthy, growing churches. Back to the experiment, after the kids witnessed the oil and water separating, we added an emulsifier of egg yolk and shook it up again. This time we did not witness any separation of the ingredients. The egg yolk had served to reduce surface tension and that allowed droplets of oil and droplets of water to remain mixed together. The point of the experiment was to reinforce the lesson that we should love everyone because God loves everyone; even though each person is a little different (or a lot different), God loves us the same. This is the lesson that the Judaizers struggled with, they did not believe that faith in Christ was enough to save them; instead, they believed that their works played a role in salvation. The Judaizers, in viewing themselves as better than Paul and the Gentile converts, attempted to condemn them. What is your view of people who are different than you? Are you content with being the oil to their water? Christ can serve as the agent that encourages us to mix with others in order to share the truth of the gospel to all nations. May we all eagerly anticipate and accept opportunities to share Christ with others, regardless of how different they may seem. In Christ, JEREMY 2 Timothy 1:6-7 **************************** Please register your 5 th or 6 th grader (or have them register themselves) by visiting out website ( go to the event tab at the top of the page, click on event registration and then click on Ignite. One preteen, out of those who have registered) will be randomly selected to receive a Fire HD 8 tablet on November 7 th. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER :00-8:00 P.M If you would like to host a trunk (decorate the trunk of your vehicle, provide and give out candy--the church will supplement your supply of candy), please sign up by the sheet in the Sunday School packets, at the Welcome Desk or contact Jeremy. If you can t host a trunk, please consider donating candy.
4 I love all styles of music contemporary, praise and worship to name a few but one of my all-time favorite styles is southern gospel. I grew up in a household that listened to southern gospel music. Every Sunday morning my dad would turn the television to one of our three channels, yes we only had three channels in the 70 s and watch a southern gospel program. When I was growing up, I used to not be as fond of this type of music. My brother and I would make fun of the big tall hairdo most of the women had, or the large lamb chop sideburns the men had. All would be wearing very bright polyester suits or dresses and at the time I really didn t enjoy it. It is funny how things change with age. October is Southern Gospel month at Dollywood. Every October for the past few years Ernie and I have visited Pigeon Forge so that we can attend some of the Southern Gospel concerts. The clothing styles have changed, the hair and sideburns have changed, but the one thing that hasn t changed is the wonderful sound of a four-part harmony of a gospel quartet singing and praising the Lord. This year our Christmas cantata will have a mix of Christmas carols, modern contemporary songs, praise and worship songs, and this year our cantata included a Southern gospel song. If you have even thought you may be interested in singing, or if you are one of those folks that have concerts in your car, choir may be the place for you to shine. Come out and see! 5 The youth had a great time at the Lock-in last week. At the beginning of the night, they played a game called underground church. At the beginning of the game, youth are divided into Christians or police. The object of the game is for the Christians to safely make it to the underground church without being arrested. They ran all through town and it was hilarious to watch them run and hide from each other so that they could win a game. I kept thinking though how that many people in our world are faced with those same dangers just to meet as a church. Unfortunately, they are not arrested, many are killed simply because they profess to be a Christian. At the end of the game, Philip led a Bible study on the rapture. The study really focused on how important it is to share the gospel with those that do not know Christ before it is too late. Philip challenged our youth to be willing to chare Christ with those around us. If you signed up for Xtreme Winter Youth Conference 2018, the total cost is $144. Your second deposit of $50 is due November 11 th. As always if you need assistance, please let us know. If you aren t attending Sunday School, please consider coming and joining us on Sunday morning as we dig into Bible study together. We have a great time and learn many things about the Bible. Come and invite your friends and come hungry we have breakfast! We also have Bible study on Wednesday night. We start with dinner in the fellowship hall at 6:30 and then head up to the youth room for Bible study. Come and join us and invite friends. On Sunday evening at 6:00 P.M., we practice drama, music, puppets, etc. for worship services. We are currently practicing for our Christmas play/musical and would love to have you.
