1 OUR SAVIOUR LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER Rev. Al Muck 751 N. Maple Grove Ave. Hudson, MI June 2017 Church Council Church Council meets Sunday, June 4th, following service. It s often remembered as the church s birthday. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised that the Holy Spirit would come upon those who believed in his resurrection. Three thousand people were gathered in Jerusalem when the Spirit came upon them. They were so touched by the Holy Spirit that they began to worship regularly, especially on Sundays, the day of Christ s resurrection. To symbolize the tongues, as of fire (Acts 2:3, NRSV) that came upon the people present at Pentecost, liturgical churches display the color red in their worship services on Pentecost Sunday. Many people attending worship wear red on that day. Doing faith Faith is better understood as a verb than as a noun, as a process than as a possession. It is onagain-off-again rather than once-and-for-all. Faith is not being sure where you re going, but going anyway. A journey without maps. [As theologian] Paul Tillich said doubt isn t the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith. Frederick Buechner

Another member, who owned the town s grain elevator, volunteered to take over with one stipulation: He wouldn t submit a report for the first year. The puzzled board members agreed because they knew he was an honest man. After all, they trusted him to process their grain. By year s end, the new treasurer gave a glowing report. The church s building debt had been erased. Staff salaries had increased 15 percent. And the budget showed a healthy balance. When the shocked but delighted congregation asked for an explanation, the treasurer said, Most of you bring your grain to my elevator. When I paid you, I simply withheld 10 percent on your behalf and gave it to the church in your name. You never missed it! Imagine what we could do for God if we willingly returned the first tenth of his gifts back to him.
3 I am writing this article before the completion of our Philip Project, our effort to reach out to those sheep in our flock who haven t been present for a while. One reason for this emphasis is that we, Our Savior Lutheran Church, bare a responsibility to those who have indicated they are a part of our family and as family, we care for one another. While the results of your efforts are not yet known, here are two quick observations that have already made the Philip Project a success. 1. The People of Our Saviour are people of prayer. Over the last 4 weeks, whether during worship or Bible study or at home, we have been in persistent prayer. Our prayers were first that God would place on our hearts the names of families that He desires us to contact. As those 16 families were placed on the altar, our prayer was that the Holy Spirit would prepare the hearts of those we were about to contact. We also prayed that the Holy Spirit would provide us the opportunity and the words to use fulfill the task set before us. Did the Lord answer our prayers? A resounding Yes! Were they answered in the way that we had hoped? Our mind should be the mind of Jesus as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. 2. The People of Our Saviour are willing to take action. Regardless of the number of families who joined us for worship on May 21, your efforts to reach out to 16 families demonstrated that you are a people of action. It is our desire the we grow as a congregation and while it is the work of the Holy Spirit to provide that growth, but we are to play a part in that growth. Paul writes 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. (1 Corinthians 3:6) If we continue to plant seeds of the Gospel and faithfully water the relationships God has given, God will be faithful and transform Our Saviour into the congregation that he has called it to be. As we enter season of Pentecost, we will be hearing a great deal about the growth of the church and the work of the Holy Spirit. The history of the early church is going to be the future of His Church, not only in Hudson and St. Johns in Adrian but across the state of Michigan, our country and the world. We go forward with confidence for we are the recipients of the same calling and promise given to the disciples as our Lord ascended into heaven, 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Pastor Al

Why Flag Day is important America was founded as a nation under God, and has been looked up to by other nations for over two hundred years. Unfortunately, other countries and some of our own citizens are disgruntled with America today. Even though our reputation has taken some hits, we re still a strong country with high ideals and proud people. There s a simple way you can help show that to the world by flying the flag. Every time you put a flag out, you re saying, I m an American and proud of what this flag represents. The flag stands for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, for religious freedom, and for other rights that many nations lack. The flag represents our history and our goals for a better future for all. Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14. Fly your flag high!
