1 A Newsletter for Dearborn Congregational Church United Church of Christ Dearborn Congregational Church United Church of Christ Rotunda Drive Dearborn, MI Website: WORSHIP SERVICE EVERY SUNDAY AT 10:00 A.M. NURSERY CARE PROVIDED REGULAR OFFICE HOURS TUESDAY, THURSDAY & FRIDAY 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 pm Reverend Kren s Office Hours: Monday Thursday mornings 8am Noon Monday Thursday afternoons 1pm until 5pm, except when visiting members of the congregation.
2 Page 1 You Are What You Eat! Health-conscious people are familiar with the adage you are what you eat. A healthy diet is important for our physical and mental well-being. Here at Dearborn Congregational Church, we are also concerned about the spiritual diet of our members. As I finish up my third year as your Pastor, it has always been a goal that I preach the Gospel clearly, teach meaningful Bible studies and minister in a way that our church would grow both numerically and spiritually. My prayer is that we would all be healthy Christians! And speaking of eating healthy, the Bible has something to say about nourishing your body, eating your veggies and drinking lots of water! In the Book of Daniel, Chapter 1:8, 12, 13, 15 we learn that Daniel, a young man of God, also believes in eating his vegetables! But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see. At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food (NIV) I m not advocating that we all become vegetarians! However, I do think that eating healthy contributes to our physical and our spiritual well-being - making us who and what we are. And now - an important announcement: Dearborn Congregational Church is adding another program that should ensure our continued spiritual and physical well-being! Beginning in July and running through September, we will be hosting a Farmer s Market! Farmers markets have been around forever! However, this will be our first attempt at a farmers market fundraiser a time for local growers to set up food stands in our busy, metropolitan area. People know that when you buy foods or other goods at the local farmers markets, you have the ability to address any questions you may have directly to the source. After all, if we are what we eat then we want our food to be as fresh and healthy as possible! Every Saturday, from 10 AM until 5 PM, our mission will be to provide the local community with the means to obtain fresh, nutritious, and seasonal foods grown or produced locally! Here at DCC we ve got you covered. Physically and spiritually only the healthiest of foods for the people of Dearborn Congregational! Blessings for a healthy and safe summer! Pastor Bill Kren
3 Messages from the Diaconate Pentecost June 4 Wear something Red on Sunday, June 4 as a symbol of the power and fire of the Holy Spirit that started the Christian church. On the day of Pentecost, the followers of Jesus were all together in one place when all of a sudden, a sound came from heaven, like a strong wind, filling the house where the people had gathered. Something like tongues of fire rested on their heads and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. May we also be filled with the Holy Spirit. Outdoor Service and Potluck Picnic June 11 We plan to have an outdoor worship service followed by a potluck picnic. We ll provide the hot dogs, you bring your favorite dish to share, and hopefully God will provide us with nice weather. If you re not able to bring something, no worries, we always have plenty. We are hoping for a nice, dry, pleasant morning, but please dress accordingly for the weather. Unless it is raining and/or cold, we will be outside to worship God and the glorious morning He gives us. Hymn Sing Sunday July 30 Mark your calendars for our second annual Hymn Sing Sunday. Last year s was so well received we re planning another one for July 30, so start thinking about the favorite hymns that you would like to sing. If you would like to volunteer to sing your favorite hymn as a solo or duet, let us know, it would be a welcome addition. Page 2 Diaconate Meeting The Diaconate is meeting on Thursday, June 8 at 7:00 pm. Page 3 Detroit Churches Tour Mark your calendars for Friday, June 23. That's the day of our 6th annual tour of historic churches. This year, we're heading to southwest Detroit for two approximately 1hour tours of the beautiful St. Francis d'assisi Catholic Church and Most Holy Redeemer Church. We will meet as a group in our church parking lot at 10 am on Friday, the 23rd. From there, we'll carpool or you're welcome to drive yourself as we head to our first stop. The tour of St. Francis starts at 10:30 am and the tour of Holy Redeemer at 12 noon. Donations to each church would be appreciated -the amount is up to you. Afterwards, we will eat lunch in Mexicantown at a restaurant on Vernor Ave. If interested in going, please put your name and the number in your party on a sign-up sheet in the church, or contact John Peters at joopett13@hotmail.com or phone: (313) We hope you'll join us! 5 Page 4 I M JUST SAYIN with Pat Stacho I am getting a new laptop! I'm quite sure you're not nearly as excited as I am, but before you start to get that envious feeling activated, there are complications. I have to clear up my memory on the old computer. (Wish it was possible to clear MY memory.) Fortunately, I have a son who does stuff with computers for a living. Soooo, his problem. My problem is clearing my desk. I started, but got sidetracked. Among that pile of papers is newspaper clippings, recipes I printed out, and books...lots of books. One is more of an aggravation than the entire pile. I bought it one of my trips to Home Goods with Elaine. It's a journal, of sorts. Each page asks a question you must answer, truthfully and in depth. The concept is, when I am gone, my family will get to know me better. Of course, I'll be gone. I would much rather they "get to know me" while I'm still here...to explain. Some of the questions are just asking for trouble. Why do I have to let my grandkids know my first "encounter"? Or if grandma ever smoked pot? I don't want to know their answers; they don't need to know mine. The favorite recipe page is ok, boring, but safe. To be honest, I have always kept a journal. I have six notebooks, full of my life! I am debating a quick bonfire. There are things I have written that can certainly be misinterpreted. On the other hand, they may think gramma was kinda cool. At any rate, I have to clean up that pile, consider what to write in that journal, and start all over signaling memory on my new laptop! It will be delivered next week, so I best get moving. My friends at Amazon alerted me to watch for the UPS guy, another of my friends. Wonder if he's got a suggestion to rid myself of those journals. The current one is quite boring. Old boyfriends names have been replaced by current doctor's names. Fantasies are now dreaming of sleeping throughout the night...alone! I may not get that desktop cleared off just yet, but I'm enjoying going through the journals. I have had some fantastic times, some not so great, but those memories are sweet...every single word I wrote so long ago. I don't think I will leave them behind...i'm just sayin'
