1 The Message of 1739 Harrison - Quincy Il, Phone pastorscottmikkelson@gmail.com Cell Pastor s Ponderings On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Luke 24:1-3 What sets the Christian faith apart from all other beliefs and religious systems in this world? If you go to the tombs of any of the prophets on which world religions have been founded, you will find them occupied. But if you go to the tomb of Jesus Christ, you will find it empty, because HE IS ALIVE! We serve a living Savior. This is why the resurrection of Jesus is such an important message. If Jesus had not risen from the dead, our faith would be foolish and fake. But He did rise from death, confirming His life and message. The resurrection of Jesus is the basis for our hope of life eternal beyond the grave. Let s look at Luke 24:1-3. It was now the third day since the death of Christ. The women were coming to anoint and honor the body of Jesus. They were not expecting Jesus to be risen from the dead. They were not expecting to not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Their focus suddenly shifted as they tried to understand what had happened to the Lord. How do we come to the tomb of Jesus? Do we come to church on Sunday with our spices of worship, praising Him for His sacrificial death for us but forget the fact that He is no longer dead? We need to praise Him for His resurrection! We have victory over sin and death! We have new and everlasting life! I fear that too often we come to the tomb looking for His body...we worship His sacrifice, but sadly, we deny His power. Paul wrote to the Ephesians about this very thing: I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God s right hand in the heavenly realms. Even the devil understands that the power of the resurrection spells his defeat. He also knows that if you believe this great truth that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again from the dead, it can change your life. Don t ever forget to include the resurrection of Christ from the dead when speaking of His death on the cross. For because He conquered sin on the cross and death through His resurrection, we can have unmistakable hope in Him for eternity. Don t come to Him as if He were still dead in the tomb, but ask Him to open your eyes that you may see Him in His resurrection power. In His Service, Pastor Scott Our Beliefs. 4 Please join us as we pray for the city of Quincy. We ll walk, jog or drive throughout the city blocks asking for God s blessings and peace over each home and business in Quincy. What a wonderful way to show God s love to those we meet. We will have a city map in the Narthex to mark off the streets we have covered in prayer each week. Watch for more details coming soon! 5 Hope Lutheran Council Meeting Minutes Unapproved 3/3/2019 The Council meeting was held Sunday, March 3, President Sachs called the meeting to order at 12:10pm. Present- Mark Cassens, Joe Cleaves, Brian Happel, Shirley Lindroth, Pastor Scott Mikkelson, Ivan Paul, Linda Sachs and Jill Weitnauer. Joe Cleaves was appointed to fill the Council vacancy of Doug Tenhouse and Joe will serve until the next annual meeting. Devotions were given through the video presented to Council during its retreat. Minutes from the February 11, 2019 Council meeting were approved as submitted. The 2019 annual congregation meeting minutes were reviewed and a typo change to Brian s name was made. Pastor Report 2/11 to 3/3: three(3) general counseling, two(2) Sunday services, two(2) community pastor/chaplain meetings, one(1) confirmation class, three hospital visits, one(1) ten hour overnight volunteer Chaplin shifts, and various other meetings. Financial Report- Cash Flow for the month was a negative $3,440. Budgeted income through February was negative $2,982 and budgeted expenses through February was negative $1,973 so expenses were better than projected. The financial report was approved as submitted. Ministry Teams- It was reported that the evangelism team will encourage the congregation to pray for the city of Quincy in the coming months. Each person will be challenged to pray for the families in each residence asking for God s blessings and peace on them. One can walk, jog or drive up and down the streets or sidewalks praying for each household as they pass by. Participants are encouraged to greet those they meet with God s blessings and stop if a conversation presents itself. A map of the city will be placed in the welcome area and as streets are covered we will highlight them so everyone knows where to pray during the next week. Old Business- The time for 1739 Hope will change to 7:00pm on March 10. Council members are encouraged to keep in contact with their Wings groups. Church security was discussed. New Business- Church building and grounds clean-up day is scheduled on Saturday, April 13. Small group continues at the Weitnauer s house Thursdays at. The building will be used by the Weitnauers on March 9 and the Yanceys on March 30. A motion was made and approved to form a committee to review the church website and facebook pages. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the church building. The meeting adjourned with prayer. Respectfully submitted, Mark Cassens, Secretary
