Maple Grove Ave. Hudson, MI November 2017 "The earth has yielded its increase: God. our God. has blessed us." - Psalm 67:6 Church Council Church Council meets Sunday, November 12th, following service. Please note the date change. Thank you, veterans! On Veterans Day, we honor men and women who've served and sacrificed in one of America's armed services. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies signed a truce with German leaders, ending WorldWar 1. In 1919, President Wilson decided the United States should remember with gratitude the end ofthat war and honor military members by marking Armistice Day, or "truce" day. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, honoring veterans ofevery era. Veterans Day highlights our country's quest for peace, justice and freedom throughout the world. Followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, pray for unity among all nations and for the day when "nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore" (Isaiah 2:4, NIV). Thanksgiving baskets We will again this year be putting together Thanksgiving baskets for those in need. There will.be a sign up sheet for items-stuffing, boxed instant potatoes, gravy, vegetables, cranberry sauce, aluminum tins, etc. We will be putting the baskets together after church on Sunday, November 19, and delivering them. Thank you for your help in this community outreach. A remarkable day Thanksgiving Day is one of the most remarkable days of the year. Decreed by a layman, the President of the United States, by authorization of Congress, it is obeyed by Catholic, Jew and Protestant, and by many who have no church affiliation. The response of more than 2,000,000 people to this call is one of the most encouraging events in our national life. Thankfulness blesses and enriches our daily life. Not only is it deserving of a special day; it merits everyday observance. - Clergy Talk Ladies' Guild Ladies' Guild meets Thursday, November 2nd, at 7:00 PM at the church. Ryle to proclaim, I dare not call that true prayer in which thankfulness has no part. He points, for example, to Paul s words in Philippians 4:6 ( By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God ) and Colossians 4:2 ( Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful ), both NIV. Whenever we speak to God, Ryle adds, thoughts of his mercy and the hope of heaven should be at the forefront of our minds. Surely, he writes, we should never open our lips in prayer without blessing God for that free grace by which we live, and for that lovingkindness which endures forever. Routinely grateful When a national day of thanksgiving was established on the fourth Thursday in November, it was not because that was a particularly thankful day. It was intentionally chosen precisely because of its arbitrariness to remind us to say thanks on a daily basis for the bounties God has heaped upon our lives. For Christians, every Sunday is a Thanksgiving feast day. Every Sunday at worship, we give thanks for the greatest event ever to hit planet Earth, the greatest opening in human history the open tomb, testifying to Jesus resurrection. Every Sunday is Thanksgiving Sunday. Every Sunday dinner is Thanksgiving dinner.

3 When we look at the recent events in the world we could easily approach Thanksgiving with a sense of anxiety and worry. The recent shootings in Las Vegas fill our minds with concerns about our safety in any public setting. We are more suspicious of those around us that often robs of the joy of experiencing the many good things this world has to offer. The suffering and loss that so many have endured during the many hurricanes that have struck our nation; the wildfires in the west that have destroyed lives have filled our lives with sadness for those who have lost so much may lessen our joy this Thanksgiving. The tensions that continue to rise between the United States and North Korea, with the looming threats of military conflict may raise concerns of what the next weeks and months may bring. Perhaps your own life has been filled with events that will make gathering around the Thanksgiving table a little more difficult. Can this be a Happy Thanksgiving? The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16) and so we turn to scripture and Psalm 100 for a time of teaching as our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! 2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! In a trouble world, a troubled life, our Lord calls us to come into His presence with singing. Being in the presence of our Lord turns our hearts and minds from the uncertainty and failings of this world to the One who is our hope. 3 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. What comfort is brought to our life situation when we fully realize that we belong to the God of all creation who as our Good Shepherd leads, guides, guards and protects us no matter where life takes us. We can rest in the full confidence that while life brings uncertainty, in God s presence in all things we can have no doubt. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Join us for worship on Sunday, November 19 as we give thanks to God for His goodness and faithfulness that will enable us to see, rejoice and give thanks that in all things, all uncertainties we can rest in the arms of our unchangeable God. Cake and Ice Cream for coffee hour. Health Care Kits to be delivered Oct th. Also, with the school kits. 12 kits were boxed up to be sent. New Business: Linda R. reported on LWML board meeting on Sept. 23, held at Our Saviour. She showed the new LWML emblem. Reports on next years National and District meetings. Suggestion on collecting canceled stamps for District collection: leave boarder when tearing or cutting off the envelope. Motion to purchase the Woman's Quarterly again at 10 copies by Mary B., and seconded by Betty C. Oct. 28 th at St. John's to crochet plastic mats for the Homeless. In the checkout aisle or on the internet, we gravitate toward headings such as "10 ways to lose weight by summer!" or "3 simple steps to acing that test!" Ancient Jewish sages urged people to count out and speak at least 100 blessings, or statements of gratitude, each day. What would happen if we intentionally listed loo blessings daily? Can you imagine?! What if the first blessing we counted was simply the day itself? "Thank you, God, for this brand new day!" "Bless my use ofthis day, Lord, that I might glorify you." Scripture encourages such awareness and promises an additional blessing in return: "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90: 12, NIV). -Heidi Mann
