Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. The organization is driven by a vision of a world without hunger and a mission to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world's most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources. Stop Hunger Now s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used primarily to support development programs and to save lives in developing countries around the world. In its efforts to respond to emergency needs around the world Stop Hunger Now receives and distributes significant donations of in-kind aid. These donations are large quantities of food, medicines, medical supplies and other such items as may be of use in fighting hunger and providing relief in a crisis. (continued on page 2)
2 The Great Day of Service Saturday, April 13, 2013 Advent UMC in Simpsonville Stop Hunger Now s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world. Participants work in three hours shifts beginning at 7:30 am and going until 7:30 pm. Cash contributions can be made payable to: Greenville District Great Day of Service. To volunteer for a three hour shift, go to: Help end hunger in our lifetime. Join with Stop Hunger Now and make a difference. Mary s Message It doesn t take long to make the transition from the Christmas holidays back to the routine of life and work. While the decorations have been packed away, I pray that the gifts of the season hope, peace, joy, and love will remain with us and infuse our life and work together. We have several opportunities for ministry and mission on the horizon. The first is our District listening session with Bishop Jonathan Holston on Sunday, February 10 at Aldersgate UMC from 3-5pm. Clergy and laity are encouraged to attend and to hear Bishop Holston talk about his vision for the future of the SC Annual Conference. I look forward to seeing you there. On April 13 we will have our District Day of Service, once again hosting a Stop Hunger Now event at Advent UMC. In addition, we will have an opportunity to participate in a similar event conferencewide on June 11 during our Annual Conference gathering in Florence. Our fundraising goal for the two events is $78,000. I am confident that we will be able to meet and exceed this amount. Many of you have already begun projects in your churches. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of people you will never know. And thanks to your generous spirits, the Greenville District finished the year by paying 82.1% of our apportionments, up from 80.4% in The Annual Conference finished at 87.03%, up 2.63% from last year. The Columbia district is to be commended for paying 100% of their conference apportionments! If they can do it, why can t we? Thank you for all that you have done to make mission and ministry possible, and for all that you will do to extend our witness in the year to come. With a glad and grateful heart, Mary V. Teasley
