TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 ST. GERALD ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH A Servant Church Of The Archdiocese of Detroit Farmington Road Farmington, Michigan Phone: Rectory Fax: Ministries Fax: Website: stgeraldparish.org OFFICE HOURS Monday thru Thursday 9:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. MASS SCHEDULE Saturday Vigil: 5:00 p.m. Sunday: 8:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. 12:00 Noon WEEKDAYS Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, First Friday: 9:15 a.m. Thursday Evening: 7:00 p.m. RITE OF RECONCILIATION Saturdays: 3:30 4:30 p.m. The readings for the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time teach us about God s justice. As we hear in the readings, it often runs counter to the human inclination for ambition and other self-serving motives. The first reading is taken from the Book of Wisdom. This unknown Jewish sage offers the perspective of the wicked on matters of justice. The wicked are guided by blind ambition and jealousy that leads to the justification of remarkably cruel human behavior. Within the passion narratives of the New Testament Gospels, we see the scribes and elders mocking Jesus while he suffered and died on the cross with a similar disposition of the wicked in today s wisdom reading (see, for example, Mt 27:41-44). The second reading is taken once again from the Letter of James. We hear in today s reading that the root of jealousy and selfish ambition is misguided passion. When passion is rooted in wisdom (a divine characteristic), it produces good fruits, is full of mercy, and cultivates peace. But when passion is misguided, it produces disorder and every foul practice, even war within your members. The truly wise person lives a life marked by humility, peacefulness, and gentleness. Such a life is full of mercy and good fruits, draws on wisdom from above, and avoids the jealousy and selfish ambition rooted in the desires of this world (3:13-18). For James, the wise person draws near to God in humility and avoids speaking evil of others and judging his neighbor. The sins of pride and arrogance cause division within the mind and division among community members (4:13-17). Thus, the believer is not a lover of the world, succumbing to passions and divided by two minds (4:1-12). Nor does the wise person make provisions for the future or presume to know God s will. Last Sunday we heard Jesus first passion prediction in the Gospel of Mark. This Sunday we hear Jesus second passion prediction. Each time Jesus has spoken in private to his disciples about his impending suffering and death. And each time we learn something about the disciples. In today s Gospel reading, (see Mk 10:32-34 for the third passion prediction), Jesus once again emphasizes the centrality of his suffering, death, and resurrection in terms of his identity as the Messiah and the son of man. It is significant that Mark tells us, But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. It is likely that the saying the disciples did not understand was and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise. As Palestinian Jews, the disciples would have believed in the idea of Israel s collective resurrection from the dead as a nation (as the Pharisees believed). But the idea of an individual resurrection from the dead may have been a new and unclear idea to them. Rather than ask Jesus, the disciples instead talked to (and argued with) one another about who was the greatest among them. Jesus saw that the disciples own human ambition was blinding them. Jesus reaction to the disciples ambition was to teach them about the virtues of humility (the first shall be last) and simplicity (bringing the child into their midst). The human inclination for self-serving motives often stands in direct contrast to Jesus call for humility and simplicity. Yet these are the very traits that Jesus expects of those among us who call ourselves disciples. Dr. Daniel J. Scholz

5 Who We Are: We are a ministry of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services (CFCS) is a non-profit organization founded in faith and dedicated to providing education, support and resources during life s most difficult moments. We exert every effort to enable individuals to achieve their final wishes, and empower families to make thoroughly informed decisions. Holy Sepulchre, Our Lady of Hope and Holy Cross are owned by the Archdiocese. CFCS manages those cemeteries as well as Mount Carmel and St. Joseph s. Catholic Cemeteries Catholics are ordinarily buried in Catholic cemeteries. Burial in a Catholic cemetery is a long-standing sign of the Church's reverence for the human body. Appropriately, the ground in Catholic cemeteries is consecrated to receive sacred remains. The Church maintains Catholic cemeteries because both in life and in death we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8). Just as the faithful have shared and celebrated faith in the community of the Church, so in death their bodies rest with other deceased members of this community, awaiting the day when God will raise their mortal bodies to glory. Catholic cemeteries also stand as a sign to the world that even in death, Christians believe in life. The images of saints in Catholic cemeteries and mausoleums are not mere decorations; they are a sign of belief in the communion of saints. A Complete Resource For End-Of-Life Services As a ministry of the Archdiocese of Detroit, CFCS simplifies this process by providing information that families can understand on their own terms. We offer both At-Need assistance (for a death that has already occurred) and Pre- Need planning. Pre-Need planning allows for a less stressfulmore informed decision by relieving loved ones of the emotional and financial burdens at a very difficult time. Benefits of Pre-Planning are: 1. Both you and your spouse plan together calmly and prudently not alone. 2. Able to make use of payment options (some with no interest) instead of payment in full. 3. Saves life insurance benefits for your surviving family. 4. Gives your family, especially your children, peace of mind. 5. Saves money by purchasing future services and products at today's prices. 6. Able to use good sound judgment not making rash decisions while under emotional stress. 7. Pre-planning assures that your wishes are made known and followed. For more information please call a family service counsellor at Holy Sepulchre, W. 10 Mile Road Southfield. (248) SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE PRIESTS RETIREMENT FUND This weekend, our parish is taking up a special collection for our priests retirement. The With Thanks for Their Service in Christ collection will support the Priests Pension Plan, which provides a monthly pension as well as health and automobile insurance to priests over the age of 70. As you may know, the retirement years can be difficult for our senior priests. No longer supported by their parish communities, they rely on minimal Social Security benefits and their pension from the Priests Pension Plan for basic needs, such as food, housing, and transportation. Please show your gratitude to those priests who have cared for and ministered to our community by prayerfully reflecting on how you can best help support our priests retirement with a gift to the With Thanks for Their Service in Christ collection. When you have completed your special collection envelope, either return it during the collection or drop it off at the parish office.
