WELCOME TO MISSION STATEMENT We are disciples of Jesus Growing in faith, Serving our community And Connecting others to Christ TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 7, 2018 Worship with Holy Communion :30 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Emil H. Klatt, III Silke Pyrlik, Director of Christian Life Jim Fritz, Director of Music 829 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC Christ Lutheran Church Preschool:
Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We practice open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. We hope you will return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet corner is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. There are Quiet Bags and other activities children can take to their seats. Please take a moment to sign your attendance slip, and mark ministries/fellowship that interest you -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher; the pastor will serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. 3 *If physically able, please stand Please remember to turn off your cell phones. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C Today s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God s law. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS TEMPLE TALK Wayne Sebulsky PRELUDE Voluntary II / Handel *ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All should make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whose Spirit we have been reborn to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. C AMEN P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C AMEN. P Rejoicing in Christ's victory over sin and death, let us come before God who calls us to repentance. Silence for reflection and self-examination P Gracious God, C you sent your son to die and rise to new life in order that death might be brought to an end and that we might live a new life in Him. Yet we confess that we too often have chosen to remain captive to doubt and fear and ways that lead to death. By our thoughts, words, and actions, we have scorned your love, diminished the lives of others, and defaced your image in us. Forgive us for Jesus sake, and enable us by His resurrection power to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died and rose again for us. P Rejoice with all creation around God's throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C AMEN
*OPENING HYMN Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation ELW 645 *THE GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all, C And also with you. *HYMN OF PRAISE - 3 -
*THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. AMEN. FIRST READING: Genesis 2:18-24 Today s reading tells of the suffering of the prophet Jeremiah, who announced God s word to Judah but was met with intense opposition and persecution. Jeremiah continues to trust in God in the midst of his suffering
The LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner. So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken. Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM 8 (The congregation sings the words in bold print.) O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of in- fants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, what are mere mortals that you should be mind- ful of them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and hon- or you crown them. You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things un- der their feet: all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea. O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! - 5 -
SECOND READING: Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Quoting from the psalms, this passage from Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus, the one through whom God created everything and who sits at God s right hand, is also the one who experienced human suffering and death in order to blaze the path of salvation for us. Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere, What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their feet. *THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God
*GOSPEL: Mark 10:2-16 Jesus announced and enacted in history the new reality of God s surprising activity. These two stories demonstrate this new reality: Women and children are accepted and valued, not dismissed as inferior to adult men. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10 th chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. Some Pharisees came, and to test [Jesus] they asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? He answered them, What did Moses command you? They said, Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her. But Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN S SERMON Pastor Emil Klatt ANTHEM We Gather At Your Table, Lord / arr: Ehret Choir THE SERMON Pastor Emil Klatt *THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. COMMEMORATIONS THIS WEEK ON THE CHURCH CALENDAR Sunday, October 7 - HENRY MELCHIOR MUHLENBERG, pastor in North America, died 1787 Muhlenberg (MYOO-len-berg) was prominent in setting the course for Lutheranism in North America. He helped Lutheran churches make the transition from the state churches of Europe to a new identity on American soil. Among other things, he established the first Lutheran synod in America and developed an American Lutheran liturgy. His liturgical principles became the basis for the Common Service of 1888, used in many North American service books for a majority of the past century. That Muhlenberg and his work are remembered today was anticipated at his death. The inscription on his grave reads, in Latin, Who and what he was, future ages will know without a stone
Stewardship is what we do after we say, I believe Clarence C. Stoughton MISSION STATEMENT We are disciples of Jesus, Growing in faith, Serving our community, and Connecting others to Christ Each fall, we at Christ Lutheran Church are called to embark on our annual Stewardship Campaign. This is an important season in the life our congregation for two reasons. First, so much of the CLC experience is powered through our stewardship response, which provides for and sustains our many ministries and mission programs, locally and beyond, as well as energizes new initiatives in outreach and other projects. Second, and more importantly, stewardship is a form of worship, through which we acknowledge our many blessings and gifts for ministry first given to us by God. As faithful servants and active stewards of Christ, we are called to share our financial blessings in addition to our commitment of time and talents. CLC has a wonderful lay ministry that is in search of volunteers who will serve by giving of their time and talents in a variety of ways. Beginning on Oct. 7, we will hear temple talks from Wayne Sebulsky, who will outline our proposed 2019 budget; on Oct. 14, Janet Betts of the CLC Preschool will speak; and on Oct. 21, our Council President, Joe Etter, will conclude our stewardship presentations. Our Stewardship focus will conclude with Pastor Klatt s sermon on Nov.4. In mid-october, you will receive a stewardship letter of invitation with an enclosed commitment card. After prayerful consideration, please complete the commitment card and bring it to worship on Consecration Sunday, Nov. 11. You will be invited to bring your completed card to the altar during worship as a visible symbol of our coming together to offer our gifts to God. Together we will learn more about what it means to more fully follow Jesus while loving and serving our community. Now, here is some homework for you. Consider why you have what you have? Consider making a list of blessings or gifts that move you to offer prayers of thanks to God. Looking at God s gifts to you, consider how God wants you to use them. In Christian Fellowship, Jim Breland, Stewardship Ministry Chair
