Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We practice open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. We hope you will return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet corner is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. There are Quiet Bags with activities children can take to their seats. Please take a moment to sign your attendance slip, and mark ministries/fellowship that interest you -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher; the pastor will serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. 3 Please remember to turn off your cell phones. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C The psalm sets the tone this day: Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away! Happy are those who have become the righteousness of God in the merits of Christ Jesus. Happy are those for whom the forgiveness of God has rolled away... the disgrace of former times. Happy is the father at the return of his prodigal son. Happy are we that our sins are forgiven for Jesus sake. Rejoice! WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed / Hughes ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand as you are able) P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who brings us out of captivity and into freedom, out of the wilderness and into the promised land, out of death and into life. C AMEN. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God, and one another Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Most holy and merciful God, C we confess to you and to one another, and before the whole company of heaven, that we have sinned by our fault, by our own fault, by our own most grievous fault, in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven. In your mercy, forgive our sinfulness and cleanse us from the guilt and shame. Guide us on the path of freedom that is your gift to us in Christ our Lord. AMEN. P Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, does not desire the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn from their wickedness and live. Therefore, we implore him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do on this day, that the rest of our life may be pure and holy, and that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C AMEN OPENING HYMN Lord, Speak to Us, That We May Speak ELW

THE GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all, C And also with you. KYRIE - 3 -

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) God of compassion, you welcome the wayward, and you embrace us all with your mercy. By our baptism clothe us with garments of your grace, and feed us at the table of your love, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. (please be seated) FIRST READING: Joshua 5:9-12 By celebrating the Passover and eating the produce of the promised land instead of the miraculous manna that had sustained them in the desert, the Israelites symbolically bring their forty years of wilderness wandering to an end at Gilgal. The LORD said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt. And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the PSALM 32 (sung responsively) 1 Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away! produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

2 Happy are they to whom the LORD im- putes no guilt, and in whose spirit there is no guile! 3 While I held my tongue, my bones with- ered away, because of my groaning all day long. 4 For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer. 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not con- ceal my guilt. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD. Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin. 6 Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them. 7 You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; I will guide you with my eye. 9 Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding; who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you. 10 Great are the tribulations of the wicked; but mercy embraces those who trust in the LORD. 11 Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the LORD; shout for joy, all who are true of heart. SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 One way to describe the gospel is the promise that in Christ everything is transformed into newness. All mistakes, all deliberate sins, all old history is reconciled with Christ s resurrection. This is Paul s strong message to the congregation in the city of Corinth. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of vi, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

LENTEN VERSE (please stand as you are able) GOSPEL: Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 Jesus tells a parable about a son who ponders his father s love only after he has spurned it. The grace he receives is beyond his hopes. That same grace is a crisis for an older brother who believed it was his obedience that earned his place in the father s home. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 15 th chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to [Jesus.] And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable: There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me. So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, How many of my father s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands. So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the - 6 -

father said to his slaves, Quickly, bring out a robe the best one and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound. Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him! Then the father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found. P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated) CHILDREN S SERMON Pastor Emil Klatt THE SERMON WHO S IN THE MIRROR? Pastor Emil Klatt APOSTLES CREED (please stand as you are able) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 15 OUR CLC LENTEN DISCIPLINE FOR 2019 Have you taken your Spiritual Gifts Assessment yet? As you look at the variety of ministry opportunities here at Christ Lutheran Church, do you wonder where you are best suited to serve? Do you hold back from volunteering, unsure of your gifts and how best to use them? Even those of you who are only with us on the island for a short time are invited to take part in this assessment and perhaps engage in ministry when you are among us. In 1 Peter 4:10, we are told "Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received." To find out what gifts God has given you, we invite you to take the Spiritual Gifts Discovery Assessment. This only takes about 10 minutes of your time! Please be straightforward with your answers. When you take this assessment online, your results will go into our system so that we can help you make the connection between your gifts and areas of service in our ministry. By the end of Lent, we would like to have you all in our system so we can help you to use your God given gifts! Please take the assessment! Once you complete the assessment, you will also receive your results via . Plus, to help you understand your gifts and how to use them when you finish the assessment, you can download a profile sheet for each of your gifts on the website. If you are not comfortable doing this online, paper copies are available in the narthex. Just fill it out and return it to the office
