Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We have a practice of open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet room is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. Please take a moment to complete your attendance slip, -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher so the pastor may serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! JOIN US: Our CLC family of faith cordially invites to become a member (full, associate or seasonal). Become an integral part of our growing membership. Mark your attendance slip or call the office for more information Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. 3 *If physically able, please stand. Please remember to turn off your cell phones. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C On the first Sunday of Christmas we find the boy Samuel and the boy Jesus, both in the temple, both growing in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and humankind. We too have returned to the house of God to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God, who has gifted us with a savior. As the festival continues, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. It is Christmas, still. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING SONG Jesus, What a Wonderful Child / African American trad. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand as you are able) P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who shines in glory, clothes us in compassion, and bears gifts of mercy for all. Silence for reflection and self-examination P Let us confess our sins with confidence in God s promise of forgiveness. God, wonderful counselor, C we confess that we have turned from your gifts and chosen our own way. We have not made room for you in our hearts or in our world. We have lived in fear; we have not welcomed the stranger; we desire gifts that will not endure. Forgive us our sins, known and unknown, and open us to receive the peace of Jesus dwelling in and among us. P God s lovingkindness has appeared to us in Christ our Savior. We are saved, not by anything we have done, but by God s mercy poured out on us richly. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Through the Spirit living in you, God give you faith to trust Jesus, who is Love born for you, now and always. C AMEN
OPENING SONG Once in Royal David s City / Alexander THE GREETING P The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE Kyrie Eleison / Olsen - 3 -
*THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) Shine into our hearts the light of your wisdom, O God, and open our minds to the knowledge of your word, that in all things we may think and act according to your good will and may live continually in the light of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26 Having dedicated her son Samuel to God s service, Hannah visits him every year when she and her husband, Elkanah, come to the Lord s house to offer sacrifices. God grants Hannah more children, and Samuel himself gains favor in the sight of all. Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod. His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, May the LORD repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the LORD ; and then they would return to their home. Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and with the people. R C The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 148 (The congregation reads the words in bold print.) Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise God in the heights. Praise the LORD, all you angels; sing praise, all you hosts of heaven. Praise the LORD, sun and moon; sing praise, all you shining stars. Praise the LORD, heaven of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD, who commanded, and they were created, who made them stand fast forever and ever, giving them a law that shall not pass away. Praise the LORD from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps; fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing God s will; mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds; sovereigns of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; young men and maidens, old and young together
Let them praise the name of the LORD, whose name only is exalted, whose splendor is over earth and heaven. The LORD has raised up strength for the people and praise for all faithful servants, the children of Israel, a people who are near the LORD. Hallelujah! SECOND READING: Colossians 3:12-17 Just as newly baptized Christians in the early church were clothed with white robes upon arising from the baptismal waters, so all who have received God s gift of life in Jesus Christ are covered with the character of Christ. As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called *THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. R C The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL: Luke 2:41-52 Jesus grew up in a family that went to the Passover festival each year. It was in this environment of faithful adherence to the law that Jesus grew into spiritual maturity and an understanding of his identity and mission. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 2 nd chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. Now every year [Jesus ] parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like - 5 -
this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came CHILDREN S MESSAGE THE SERMON SONG OF THE DAY to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ. Holy Child within the Manger / Haugen Pastor Rick Klotz Pastor Rick Klotz - 6 -
*THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P Rejoicing in the good news of Christ s birth and dwelling in hope, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of creation After each portion of the prayers: P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Hear the prayers of your people, glorious God, for the sake of the one who took on our nature and form to redeem the whole world, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C AMEN. *THE PEACE (We may greet one another in the name of the Lord) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. In preparation for Holy Communion, the congregation shares the Lord s peace with one another Peace be with you. THE RETURNING OF GIFTS *THE RETURNING RESPONSE Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him all creatures here below Praise him above ye heav n-ly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. AMEN. *THE RETURNING PRAYER (said in unison) God with us: You came as a baby to a manger. You slept on straw and greeted shepherds. You come again in bread and wine. Remind us how good you are at blessing ordinary things. And then, through these gifts, help us to bless the lives of others in the strength of your holy name. AMEN
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C and also with you. P Lift up your hearts C We lift them to you, Lord P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God C It is right to praise you, Lord. P As we come again to this table, we recall the story. It was a night of celebration and also betrayal, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying, "When you eat this bread, and remember me, you become one in my body." In the same way, he took the cup after supper saying, "My very lifeblood will be poured out. But when you drink this cup, and remember me, I will be in you." C Come, Holy Spirit, Come. P Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking, that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. C AMEN. *THE LORD S PRAYER (SUNG in unison) Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN INVITATION TO COMMUNION P Come to the table where Christ meets you. Eat, rejoice, and be glad! C AMEN (please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. The elements will be received by Intinction. You will receive the Host from the Pastor; move to the chalice bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. If you prefer to receive the bread from the Pastor, please move to that side of the aisle. If you choose, you may kneel at the rail for a moment of prayer and meditation after receiving the elements

Until the recent past, Lutheran calendars called this day The Circumcision and Name of Jesus. The emphasis on circumcision is the older emphasis. Every Jewish boy was circumcised and formally named on the eighth day of his life. Already in his youth, Jesus bears the mark of a covenant that he makes new through the shedding of his blood on the cross. That covenant, like Jesus name, is a gift that marks the children of God. Baptized into Christ, the church begins a new year in Jesus name. Wednesday, January 2-- JOHANN KONRAD WILHELM LOEHE -- renewer of the church, died 1872 Loehe was a pastor in nineteenth-century Germany. From the small town of Neuendettelsau, he sent pastors to North America, Australia, New Guinea, Brazil, and the Ukraine. His work for a clear confessional basis within the Bavarian church sometimes led to conflict with the ecclesiastical bureaucracy. Loehe s chief concern was that a congregation find its life in the holy communion, and from that source evangelism and social ministries would flow. Many Lutheran congregations in Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa were either founded or influenced by missionaries sent by Loehe
