2 Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We practice open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. We hope you will return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet corner is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. There are Quiet Bags and other activities children can take to their seats. Please take a moment to sign your attendance slip, and mark ministries/fellowship that interest you -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher; the pastor will serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi s adoration of the Christ child, Jesus baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the great epiphany of God s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst. C AMEN P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 *THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is assured that nations will make a pilgrimage to her, because the light of God s presence is in her midst. The bountiful food of the sea and the profits of international trade will come streaming to Jerusalem and thereby declare God s praise. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your

6 daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. 7 SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:1-12 What had been hidden from previous generations is now made known through the gospel ministry of Paul and others. In Christ both Jews and Gentiles participate in the richness of God s promised salvation. This is the reason that I, Paul, am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s grace that *THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL: Matthew 2:1-12 God s promise shines bright in the night as magi follow a star to honor a new king. Strangers from a faraway land, they welcome the long-awaited messiah of Israel. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 2 nd chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him

When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. CHILDREN S SERMON Pastor Emil Klatt THE SERMON Look Farther Than You Can See Pastor Emil Klatt *NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets

9 We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN. *THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P Drawn to the light of Christ, made bold in the waters of baptism, and filled with the Spirit, we lift up our prayers in confidence that God loves us and listens to us After each portion of the prayers: P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Good and Gracious God, we ask all these things and whatever else you see that we need, with a sure and certain hope in your goodness and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Savior. AMEN. *THE RETURNING OF GIFTS PRAYER (said in unison) God of abundance, we return to you from the gifts which you have first entrusted to us, and with them our very lives. Through these gifts, help us to bless the lives of others in the strength of your holy name. AMEN. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C and also with you. P Lift up your hearts C We lift them to the Lord P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God C It is right to give our thanks & praise. 10 P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying take and eat; do this in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P With this bread and cup, we remember your Word, dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming again. C Come, Lord Jesus. P Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. C Come, Holy Spirit. P Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share in this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord. To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy Church now and forever. THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. Our Eucharistic celebration will be offered by Intinction at the head of the aisle. You will receive the Host from the Pastor or Paten Bearer; move to the Chalice Bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. If you prefer to receive the bread from the Pastor, please move to that side of the aisle. If you choose, you may kneel at the rail for a moment of prayer and meditation after receiving the elements. If one of the couples is not able to host a meal in their home, they can plan a Dutch-treat meal out. 14 BACK PACK BUDDIES: This ongoing program under The Hunger Coalition provides nutritious food to 250 children at three elementary schools for the weekend. We partner with Hilton Head Elementary and it takes many volunteers to make it work! We will be: Setting up food at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9 Packing backpacks at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10 (in Heinrichs Hall) Interested in helping out? Please give me a call or to discuss what you can do. How does technology cause us to care less? 1. We're more obsessed with OURSELVES. 2. Overwhelming exposure to suffering DESENSITIZES us. 3. Lack of PERSONAL interaction makes it easier not to care. Pastor Craig Groeschel is back with a new series called #struggles. He will teach us that true compassion demands ACTION. To say you care but not ACT is to not CARE at all. 1) Compassion INTERRUPTS. 2) Compassion COSTS. 3) Compassion changes LIVES. Come and dig deeper with us as we discover the influence of social media on our lives, as well as the lives of our kids and grandkids!

16 A UNIQUE MOVIE NIGHT IS PLANNED FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30 The CONNECTED Planning Team and Social Ministry Team invite you To a conversation about the important topics of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease Memory Matters will be with us for a short presentation and to answer a few questions after we watch the movie "Still Alice." We believe we all know at least one person in our lives who has touched and changed us while we watched them losing their grip on reality. We will offer a light pizza and salad supper -- So we can plan for food, please mark your attendance slip to let us know of your plans to attend. Also, you may indicate your need for transportation. Please join us on Wednesday, January 30 at 5:00 p.m. in Heinrichs Hall! Still Alice -- Dr. Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a renowned linguistics professor at Columbia University. When words begin to escape her and she starts becoming lost on her daily jogs, Alice must come face-to-face with a devastating diagnosis: early-onset Alzheimer's disease. As the once-vibrant woman struggles to hang on to her sense of self for as long as possible, Alice's three grown children must watch helplessly as their mother disappears more and more with each passing day
