3 DIOCESE OF HEREFORD This directory is aimed at helping you identify quickly, the help that exists within the diocese in specialist areas. Support Ministers are in post to aid the church in its' work of spreading the Good News, within the diocese. You will find names, contact details and a brief summary of what each Minister does. You will find a wide range of expertise and specialisms among people, who have often worked in that field in the secular world, as well as home grown talent. Support Ministers can help within the parishes, but their function is also strategic in ensuring that the work of the diocese, as defined by the Diocesan Synod, is carried out within their field in as wide a role as possible. For more information go to: Communications Summer

11 Revd Anne Lanyon-Hogg 7 Lockyear Close Colwall Malvern WR13 6NR annelh@stillanne.org SSM ADVISER Self-Supporting Ministers (including OLMs, MSEs and sector ministers) amount to just over a third of the total number of ordained ministers in the Diocese plus SSMs who hold the Bishop's Permission to Officiate, and who contribute significantly to the ministry offered by parishes and deaneries. The SSM Adviser co-ordinates this network, encourages members in their very varied work and, where appropriate, helps them and their parishes plan the ministry they will offer. It is also important to promote a clear understanding of the wide-ranging roles of SSMs. SSMs are often in the forefront of the church's mission: they need - and value - the prayers and support of the parishes for their ministry both in the workplace and in the community. 11

19 ECUMENICAL DIOCESAN ECUMENICAL OFFICER Revd Preb Richard Shaw The Granary Newcastle Court Newcastle Craven Arms SY7 8QL The Ecumenical Officer has two main areas of work. Firstly, to work with parishes and deaneries to enable local ecumenism - often in partnership with ecumenical officers from other churches and with the county/intermediate body for Churches Together in England. Secondly, to draw attention to the ecumenical dimension in every aspect of the life of the diocese. I am responsible to the Bishop and to the Ecumenical Committee, which is chaired by the Dean. All Diocesan Ecumenical Officers are supported, and encouraged by, The Revd Dr Roger Paul, The National Ecumenical Officer for England, Council for Christian Unity, based at Church House Westminster; so if there is any aspect on which I cannot give a swift answer, I know someone who can! 19

20 SAFEGUARDING SAFEGUARDING ADVISER Mandy McPhee ( ) All aspects of safeguarding. Helping to ensure that children and adults within the Church community are safeguarded in line with the House of Bishops policy Protecting All God s Children and Promoting a Safe Church. DBS (CRB) checks: please contact Judy Pearce j.pearce@hereford.anglican.org Prior to this role I served as a Police officer with West Midlands Police. The work included operational emergency response policing, criminal investigation, child protection, training, offender management, neighbourhood policing and laterally partnership liaison. Safeguarding in a church context presents a unique challenge. The church by its very nature is open all hours, accepting of everyone no matter who, believing the best in everyone no matter what. This creates an environment where vulnerability could exist. I have come from an organisation that some would say suspects the worst in everyone. It is certainly an organisation that teaches its officers to assume nothing, keep an open mind, survey an environment, gain information and assess risk before deciding on a course of action. This perspective assists me in surveying the church environment and its activities and building and developing strong safeguarding practices. 20

21 CHAPLAIN WORKING WITH DEAF PEOPLE Revd Hilary Morgan The Rectory Cooks Lane Kingstone Hereford HR2 9EY Tel / Fax revhilary2011@btinternet.com Chaplain for the deaf is an ever expanding role not helped by serious cuts in social services. The Deaf church meets once a month, at St Barnabas Church, on the third Sunday at 3pm. This service is signed in BSL and has an easy relaxed approach making it accessible for all. We welcome anyone and often have other people attending with a special need. We have other social events during the month and also offer help to Deaf people across the diocese, facilitating access to a world where deafness is a hidden problem. In addition we help with occasional services and can be called to sign for funerals, baptisms and weddings. We have links with Hereford Deaf Children s Society. 21

22 Gail Bonella-Foster 14 Beech Road, Madeley Telford TF7 5JR DISABILITY Supports Parishes & Deaneries in implementing the Disability Discrimination Act.
