This is a fixed grade for the post no further increments are due. However, there is usually an inflationary increase in July each year.

3 INTRODUCTION Thank you for your interest in the post of Director of Vocations. The Diocese of Manchester is a vibrant and changing organisation. We are undergoing a programme Fit for Mission to ensure the church of today becomes the church for tomorrow. Part of our change programme is to support increased numbers of vocations both lay and ordained. Accordingly the Diocese has restructured its resources in this area to move from a 0.5 Diocesan Director of Ordinands, which was combined with the role of Archdeacon of Salford, to a broader role of Director of Vocations which will be fulltime. The successful candidate will need to be able to hold the Bishop s Licence and must therefore be ordained Anglican Clergy or a Reader or a Church Army Captain. It might be that to date your career has been in full-time ministry or it might be that you have combined your ministry with other interests or a career either within the church or another sector. What will be key will be your ability to identify and grow vocation in terms of individuals and types of vocation. You will be able to appreciate the diversity that exists within the Diocese and positively embrace this to attract the widest range of individuals to consider how they can serve God in our communities. Candidates shortlisted for interview should note that prior to interview we will approach your current or last Diocese for a reference, and where the applicant is an ordained clergy, a Clergy Current Status Letter. You should therefore include your current or most recent Bishop as a referee and give permission for us to approach them if you are shortlisted.

4 JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE DIRECTOR OF VOCATIONS Grade/Salary: 45,614 (Diocesan Pay Scale Band 7.1). Terms and Conditions: Terms and conditions are lay terms Hours of work: Full Time - 35 hours per week Term: Permanent, following the successful completion of a six month probationary period. Normal place of work: Bishopscourt, Bury New Rd, Salford M7 4LE, with sometime being spent at Church House, 90 Deansgate, Manchester M3 2GP and sometime in parishes. Flexible working is required for this post in terms of hours and location. Purpose The Bishop of Manchester is seeking to appoint a full time Director of Vocations who will: set a culture in the Diocese that motivates all God s people to discern and develop their gifts whatever their age, ethnicity, gender or social background refresh and renew our vocations strategy in collaboration with key stakeholders, paying particular attention to developing a greater diversity of candidates lead a Vocations team who will help create the culture and deliver the strategy fulfil the statutory role of a Diocesan Director of Ordinands - DDO, eg in relating to the National Church oversee the discernment and selection of people for Reader, Accredited Lay Ministers and other authorised ministries Background Information The Diocese of Manchester is the Church of England in Bolton, Bury, Leigh, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, and parts of Rossendale, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. The Director of Vocations will be line managed by the Bishop of Bolton and be a member of the Bishop s Leadership Team.

5 Introduction and Context At National level A considerable amount of change and discussion is going on at a national level in relation to vocations and training, including four particular strands: The Reform and Renewal programme invites the church to reconsider the shape of ministry in its widest sense under the strapline of Re-imagining ministry There is a desire to see the number of vocations to ordained ministry rise by 50% from the current levels (of around 500 per year) in order to meet the needs of the Mission of the church The way initial training for Ordinands is funded is changing, giving more responsibility to Dioceses and requiring close links between the Director of Vocations and Colleges / Courses The selection criteria for Ordinands is being reviewed At Diocesan level The Diocesan Fit for Mission programme recognises that we need to engage all the baptised people of God in mission and ministry in order to fulfil our vision to be a worshipping, growing and transformative Christian presence at the heart of every community. Thanks to our strategy of sowing, growing, harvesting, the Diocese performs better than most in terms of the number of Ordinands coming through each year compared to the number of attendees. Despite these efforts, we still lag behind in terms of the age profile of our candidates (especially women), and in the ethnic diversity of our candidates for ordination. The socio economic context of the Diocese, with one third of the parishes in areas of high deprivation demands particular skills in developing vocations from those communities The way in which we support and enable Reader ministry is also due for a review Like the National church we too are engaged in Re-imagining ministry across the Diocese. The Director of Vocations will need to ensure that appropriate people are selected for this reimagined ministry and are supported with appropriate training Over the coming years the diocese plans to appoint people to lay mission and ministry posts in parishes and deaneries. Key Tasks Given this overall context and the general vision for the post given above, the following key tasks have been identified: 1. To be the lead for setting the culture of Vocation and nurturing Vocations in the Diocese 2. To renew and refresh a Vocations Strategy in the Diocese, so as to encourage and nurture both ordained and lay ministerial vocations 3. To develop, shape and lead the Vocations team (including the team of Assistant Diocesan Directors of Ordinands)

6 Specific tasks, including: 1. To be responsible for overseeing the discernment of vocations to ordination and their training routes including the required budgetary work. 2. To work with others to develop Fresh Expression and Pioneer Vocations and pathways for discernment 3. To keep abreast of and contribute to the National discussions on vocation and to be the main Diocesan person who engages with Ministry Division, Theological Education Institutions, and other relevant bodies. 4. To oversee Reader Selection Process and work with the Warden of Readers to promote and develop Reader ministry 5. To encourage the development of the gifts and passions of lay people across the Diocese, encouraging parishes to promote vocation, exploring new lay ministry roles, signposting the various resources available for discernment and training, and promoting the recruitment to and work of ALM - Accredited Lay Ministry 6. To contribute to Foundations for Ministry and oversee the Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme (CEMES) in the Diocese. 7. To work with the Diocesan Youth Officer, Young Adults Missioners, University Chaplains, School heads and chaplains, and others to encourage younger vocations, especially amongst women. 8. To work with Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and the Cultural Diversity Missioner to encourage BAME vocations and support them 9. To work with groups and individuals including the Chaplain to the Deaf community to encourage people with disabilities to recognise and fulfil their vocation 10. To develop strategies and effective plans to empower those from areas of high deprivation and those with little formal education to discern and fulfil their vocations whether lay or ordained. 11. To develop social media and other avenues as tools for vocations development We hope to see: A culture of fostering vocations in the Diocese A younger and more diverse profile of candidates for ALM, Reader and Ordained ministry An increased number of Ordinands, Reader and ALM candidates All the baptised being released and energised for ministry and mission Suitable candidates for stipendiary lay ministers

7 Additional Information The Vocations Team The Vocations team is key to the setting a culture within the Diocese regarding vocations and developing the Vocations strategy and its implementation. The Director of Vocations will be expected to develop their team. There are currently 4 Archdeaconry ADDOs who combine this role with full time parochial ministry. There are also 8 Archdeaconry Reader chaplains, part of whose role is to encourage and discern vocations. In addition to these, there are Vocations advisers and Bishop s Examining Chaplains and ALM chaplains. Many deaneries have vocations champions or similar, and Archdeaconry Vocations groups have been developed. We envisage the Director of Vocations will revisit how the vocations work is done, ensure that there is joined up thinking between all the pathways to lay ministry, Reader ministry and Ordained ministry, and encourage every deanery and mission unit to be fostering and nurturing vocations. The Director of Vocations will also need to be in close contact with the Mission and Ministry department especially in relation to training. They will also need to be abreast of the progress of Fit for Mission and the new kinds of ministry envisaged. The postholder will also need to liaise closely with other key stakeholders such as the Bishop's Advisor for Women's Ministry.

Able to work across the diversity of the socio-economic context of the Diocese An understanding of the processes of discerning vocations in the Church of England Someone willing and able to hold the Bishop s licence Secure in their own faith and calling Work-related circumstances Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends Willing to travel both within the Diocese and beyond (Driving licence / car not essential) Driving licence and use of a car for work purposes There is an Occupational Requirement for the post holder to be a practising Christian, and member of the Anglican Church, in accordance with Schedule 9 to the Equality Act 2010.
