3 Recruitment Timeline Applications Applications must be received by Sunday 15 th April Application forms, with a covering letter no more than one side of A4 describing what attracts you to this role should be returned to Human Resources either by post to The Diocesan Office, The Old Deanery, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2UG or by to recruitment@bathwells.anglican.org. Shortlisting Shortlisting will take place on 17 th April To ensure the fairness of the selection process, shortlisting will be based upon the information which you provide in your application and assumptions will not be made about your experience or skills. We will look for demonstrable evidence that you meet the criteria set out in the person specification. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the shortlisting process. Information provided on the application form will be viewed by HR, the recruiting manager and interview panel. Interview Interviews will take place at The Old Deanery, Wells on Tuesday 8 th May Further details regarding the selection process will be communicated at the time applicants are invited for interview. 4 The Diocese of Bath and Wells The Diocese of Bath and Wells is one of 41 Church of England dioceses in the country. The diocese stretches from Portishead in the north to Crewkerne in the south, Minehead in the west to Frome in the east. The diocese loves and serves the 940,000 people who live here through its family of 496 parishes and 181 church schools. This family works for the good of local communities in a range of practical as well as pastoral ways; caring for the vulnerable in our societies, supporting local families and encouraging children and young people. Everything the diocese does is underpinned by prayer and worship and is driven by our vision: In response to God s immense love for us, we seek to be God s people, living and telling the story of Jesus. 6 About the Role This is an exciting time in the life of the Diocese as we are re-structuring for mission and evangelism and actively encouraging creativity and innovation in our thinking and acting. We are aware of making the path into the next generation of the church s life by walking it step by step under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Seven strands of activity underpin both our strapline and our Diocesan priorities. One of these, the Pioneer Project, consists of an initiative to create a pioneer culture, growing skills and experience of cross-cultural mission. It has bee funded by a 3M grant from the Church Commissioners Strategic Development Fund and the Evangelism and Pioneer Team Leader has responsibility for implementing the objectives of this Project as Pioneer Project Lead. Included in the costing for the Project is the salary for a half-time Faith Sharing Enabler whose role will be to fulfil the Evangelism responsibilities of the Evangelism and Pioneer Team Leader for the 5-year lifetime of the Pioneer Project. Church congregations are conscious of the need to share the story of Jesus and of their own faith with those around them, but they know they lack both the confidence and the tools to tell the good news in an easy and natural way with family and friends. We hope the applicant for this post will be able to help them grow into confident evangelists, starting from where each individual and congregation is at. We have given this post the title of Faith Sharing Enabler intentionally to make the work of sharing the gospel seem simple and achievable to all both in church contexts and out of church in their day-to-day lives. 6
7 Job Description POST: Faith Sharing Enabler Our vision for the diocese In response to God s immense love for us, we seek to be God s people living and telling the story of Jesus. The main aims of the role are: To encourage and enable individual churchgoers, congregations, lay ministers, clergy, parishes and deaneries to grow in confidence in telling their faith story by providing them with the training, opportunities, skills and resources to be effective witnesses to the gospel of Jesus Christ. To be an effective advocate for evangelism in the Ministry for Mission Team, ensuring it is fully integrated into the implementation of the Diocesan Strategy. LOCATION: The Old Deanery, Wells, Somerset BA5 2UG REPORTING TO: Evangelism & Pioneer Team Leader HOURS OF WORK: 24 hours per week KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Evangelism & Pioneer Team Leader Colleagues within the Ministry for Mission department and the rest of the Old Deanery, in particular the Mission and Evangelism Admin Assistant and Pioneer Project Admin Assistant Parish Clergy, Readers and Wardens PCCs and congregations People who lack confidence in living and telling the story of Jesus Area and Lay Deans Mission Enabling Group (Deanery Mission Enablers and Parish Missioners) Fresh Expressions teams Pioneers 7
8 MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES: To practise and model a passion for sharing the Christian gospel and seeing people find new life in Jesus Christ With the Evangelism and Pioneer Team Leader to devise a strategy for evangelism across the Diocese To provide guidance, teaching, encouragement, training and enabling of others in sharing their faith with others, working across the diocese at every level To develop resources or training courses as required To act as consultant in matters of evangelism to all Diocesan staff and clergy, PCCs and congregations To enable church leaders to gain confidence in enabling their congregations to be effective and relaxed evangelists, signposting them to appropriate support and resources To investigate, discover, test, teach and develop expertise in tools and resources for evangelism from a broad range of providers representing a range of approaches To advise and contribute to specialist Learning Hubs for new forms of church (eg Messy Church, Outdoor Church) as forums for sharing the gospel in community in creative and contemporary ways To attend meetings of the team of Mission Enablers, encourage and facilitate the sharing of ideas and good practice, and support them in outreach activities and local mission To play a full part within the Evangelism and Pioneer Team on shared tasks and responsibilities To work within the Ministry for Mission department and act as evangelism champion within it With other colleagues encourage prayer for the work of evangelism across the diocese, taking a lead on Thy Kingdom Come To support the Vocations Team Leader (DDO) in developing the skills and potential of those called to the ministry of Evangelism To work with the Training Team Leader to ensure the availability of appropriate courses and training in the areas of evangelism. To build relationships with para-church organisations with specialisms in the ministry of evangelism To keep up to date with thinking, theology, practice and research data in the area of evangelism Membership of the Ministry for Mission team Attend regular Ministry for Mission meetings and contribute to Diocesan groups and committees as required To contribute to projects across the department With the Evangelism & Pioneer Team Leader monitor and respond to national initiatives in Evangelism To undertake any other reasonable duties as may be required 8
9 Person Specification Key Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications Training in the ministry of evangelism A good understanding of and Experience Experience in and a passion for the ministry of evangelism the Church of England, its structures, functioning and Proven ability to develop evangelism within a church context traditions A qualification in theology Proven track record in seeing people come to faith in Christ through own ministry Experience of teaching the Mission Shaped Ministry Course Skills and Abilities Work-related Personal Qualities An understanding of the national picture of evangelism and awareness of missiological issues An understanding of mission and evangelism in an Anglican context Experience of developing and providing training Educated to Level 3 Able to communicate well, listen, converse and influence at different levels of meetings e.g. one to one, small groups and large gatherings Ability to enable others from all traditions to be active and enthusiastic witnesses Ability to adapt the message appropriately according to context Ability to enthuse and inspire others, both through speaking and modelling Ability to teach and train well Able to work collaboratively Organised Able to guide and mentor to develop the skills and potential of others Able to use social media Ability to travel around the diocese Ability to relate across churchmanship traditions and within different local contexts Experience of developing church planting, fresh expressions or of pioneer ministry Experience of working ecumenically Ability to think creatively and generate new ideas An Occupational Requirement exists for the post-holder to be a practising Christian of a denomination which is a member of Churches Together in England in accordance with the Equality Act The role is open to lay and ordained candidates. This role will require an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check. 9
10 Main Terms and Conditions Hours of Work 24 hours per week, to be worked flexibly Core office hours are 9am until 5.15pm Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 5pm on Fridays with an hour unpaid lunch break taken as appropriate. (Full time hours are 36 hours per week) Salary 20,000 per annum (Full-time equivalent is 30,000) Term Pension Holiday Expenses Probation This is a fixed term contract for an initial four years to provide additional resource as part of a time limited project. The role will be reviewed during the third year. Pension Scheme administered by the Church of England Pensions Board. The employer will contribute 10% of the employee s pensionable salary and the employee may choose to make an additional voluntary contribution of any proportion of their pensionable salary. 25 days per calendar year plus bank holidays pro rata. The holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Additional discretionary days are given at Christmas and Easter. All reasonable working expenses will be met at the agreed Diocesan rates. This post will be subject to a probationary period. 10
