2 2 Role Purpose General: 2.1 To advance the Kingdom of God in this place through prayer, leadership, collaboration, example, and welcoming and working with all people of good will 2.2 To exercise the cure of souls shared with the bishop 2.3 To be rooted in the life of this parishes, and to give parishioners and to all who request it, care, support and service, according to need and through the Pastoral Offices Specific tasks and challenges 2.4 To hold before the people of God here the vision of the world-wide church, exchanging spiritual and material gifts, and engaging in mutual learning and the search for justice, local and global 2.5 To promote unity and collaboration between local churches and churches within the Deanery. 2.6 To maintain and support resident priestly ministry at West Chiltington and to empower its PCC and people 2.7 To inspire the improvement of our buildings, and to continue to encourage and enhance their use by church and community groups to promote education, recreation, artistic creativity and personal well-being of people of all ages Specifics Agreed - HOW Encouraging a culture of openness and welcome for visitors and residents from anywhere in the world Participating and encouraging others to participate in local organisations and groups Attend chapter meetings Attend deanery synod Encouraging participation in events and ongoing concerns Promote unity by working with ecumenical partners Supporting and working with the colleagues, curate, reader and the retired clergy within the parishes Promoting the profile of parish in local and diocesan circles Encourage financial support to the Diocese by developing a five year financial plan to pay full PMC Being open to all proposals to enable effective ministry within the parishes Holding and promoting the parishes vision as set out in the profile. To be involved and instrumental with the Churchwardens for the care of the church buildings To welcome and establish personal links with community users Page 2 of 8
3 2.8 Conscientiously to train, support and encourage all willing lay members of the congregations, and to encourage the vision of participatory ministry by ordained, licensed and lay people By example in prayer, worship, pastoral care, teaching and administration By specific instruction, especially in liturgical and legal matters By promoting specific training events that the Diocese organise By encouraging reflection together on pastoral, spiritual and homiletic issues 3 Main responsibilities General 3.1 To lead the benefice and inspire it to articulate and develop its vision of God and its service to the community, by motivating and empowering members of the benefice individually and collectively to provide an effective and relevant witness to God s love in the community, so that the whole community of faith is encouraged to participate more fully in the mission of God in the world. 3.2 To maintain and model a prayerful spiritual life, make full use of appropriate support networks and regular retreats, and develop personal skills and knowledge in relation to ministry in order to sustain you in your role and to inspire growth in others through learning and example. Specific Holding the vision of God in Christ before the people Inspiring, motivating, challenging and empowering church members, individually and collectively, to achieve that vision By collaborating with colleagues and the congregation to encourage those who are seeking God through Christ, and accompanying them in their search for God Encouraging members of the congregation to see their Christian life as a journey of discovery Supporting Christians in evangelism and discipleship so that members of the parish are encouraged to show God s love in action Developing relations and positive links with community and external organisations Engaging with and serving the parishes, working where appropriate with other parishes and agencies, Working with other churches to assist in implementing the diocesan mission strategy. Maintaining a prayerful spiritual life through the Daily Office, reading, regular meetings with Spiritual Director, and retreats Continually developing personal and ministerial skills and knowledge through reading, study training courses, consultancy, and workshops Inspiring growth in others through learning and example and by acting as a model of the love of God in action Managing time effectively through personal administration, planning and organisation, working in a team, chairing meetings, interpersonal skills and taking appropriate breaks Allowing adequate time for family life, friends, recreation, renewal and personal health, taking a Page 3 of 8
4 3.2 To model and promote effective pastoral care and service in the parish and in the congregation. 3.3 To lead and organise worship, teaching prayerfully, competently and confidently, valuing both word and sacrament, and ensuring regular patterns of worship across the benefice in order to reflect its diversity and point to its unity in Christ. 3.4 To work with the PCC and churchwardens on continually reviewing processes, policies and accountabilities of roles in relation to services, weddings, baptisms and funerals, health and safety, finances and fabric etc in order to meet diocesan and legal requirements and ensure that it is well equipped to participate in the mission of God in the world. 3.5 To develop and make full use of the opportunities provided by occasional offices and local school contacts, in order to reach out and encourage new people to Christian faith. 3.6 To support and encourage the groups and societies active in the benefice (which does not imply attending them all) and oversee weekly day off and full holiday entitlement (refer to SOP) Following an appropriate pattern of work that enables a full spiritual and personal life, as well as meeting the demands of ministry. Identifying pastoral care needs and identifying and enabling appropriate people to provide them giving support to those in specific situations, through baptism and marriage preparation, care of the sick and dying, bereavement, and visiting Communicating effectively and appropriately with people of the church and parish Listening actively and behaving empathetically. Leading worship that gives glory to God, prayerfully, competently and confidently Reflecting, interpreting, teaching and preaching the gospel to encourage faith development Encouraging the use of human, musical, dramatic, architectural and audio visual resources to offer and enable educational opportunities Supporting the Church community, developing faith and responding to the needs of different ages and levels of faith and knowledge Develop a regular pattern of meetings, with colleagues clerical and lay Encouraging appropriate training and development of staff and volunteers To make good use of diocesan staff and the website to enhance good practice and that of colleagues Establishing own patterns of working with school Regular attendance at school events. Continuing to develop the good relationship between school and church and encouraging those who are already involved in the governance of these schools. Maintain visibility within the parish Working with the PCC and churchwardens to ensure that structures and resources for parish organisation are appropriate, including clear boundaries and Page 4 of 8
5 and encourage the local ministry team and benefice advisory group (who currently provide pastoral care on an informal basis) in order to help them to identify and respond to the pastoral care needs in the community and serve it more effectively. 3.7 To support and develop the benefice ministry team with non-stipendiary, retired and lay ministers, and ensure that collectively we meet the demand within the congregation for equipping and enabling in discipleship and ministry, including confirmation preparation, assemblies, Lent courses etc. 3.8 To work with clergy, readers, formal and informal groups and teams and colleagues elsewhere in the deanery, to encourage and enable them to participate fully in planning and decision making, and where appropriate, challenge and support them so that everyone s gifts and talents are recognised and affirmed, and the sense of unity within the benefice continues to grow. accountabilities of roles Ensuring that structures, processes and policies in relation to services, weddings, baptisms and funerals, health and safety, financial, fabric, staff management, etc meet diocesan and legal requirements. 8 6 Statutory requirements 6.1 Your holiday entitlement will be 36 days per year, commencing on 1 April of each year. 6.2 You are entitled to at least a 24 hour period of rest from the parish during a working week. 6.3 The Bishop instructs you to attend Deanery Synod meetings and Deanery Chapter meetings and certain other days as notified by his office. 6.4 You must participate in the MDR process (Ministerial Development Review) in the diocese, and you will be allocated to a Reviewer. 6.5 The diocese follows the guidelines set out by the Archbishops Council on the statement of fitness for work and absence management.
