2 Information The diocesan training team is delighted to commend to you the training opportunities for the next six months. You will find in this CMD (Continuing Ministerial Development) programme a mixture of day and residential training opportunities. Whether you are looking for practical input or something to refresh you theologically, we hope that you will find something which will assist you in your ministry. We are also offering a couple of day courses on Saturdays, with the hope that this will encourage bookings from SSMs and licensed lay ministers. Booking and Cancellation Policy Please look at the details for each event for booking information. In most cases, you can book your place by contacting on the address below: bookings@peterborough-diocese.org.uk Some events can only accommodate limited numbers, and places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so please make your booking as soon as you get this programme. Once an event is full, we will put people on a reserve list. You will be advised either way. Final information will usually be sent out around a week beforehand. Unless otherwise indicated, all training will take place at the diocesan offices at Bouverie Court in Northampton. If you find that you will be unable to attend an event for which you have booked, please advise us as soon as possible.

3 Clergy CMD Grant All serving clergy are eligible for an annual 100 grant towards the costs of books, retreats, pilgrimages, or study. Some money is also available to support clergy wishing to pursue further study, with priority given to curates completing a first degree in theology started during preordination training. Study grants are also offered by the All Churches Trust and the Women's Continuing Ministerial Education Trust. Applications for further degree study need to be received by April 2017 for study starting in September Sabbaticals Sabbaticals may be applied for by licensed clergy (including SSMs who are active within the parish to which they are licensed), stipendiary lay readers, diocesan officers (where specified in their contract) and Church Army Officers who have completed 10 years of service since ordination, licensing, or commissioning, and who have usually served for 5 years in the current post. A minimum of 7 years must have elapsed since the last sabbatical leave. Normally only those who have at least 5 years of service left before retirement will be considered for sabbatical leave. 4 Special Inter-Faith Grants For 2017 only, the diocese is offering six 100 grants for lay or ordained leaders to use for Interfaith courses. For information on some of the courses offered in our region, please see the website of the St Philip s Centre in Leicester, Further Support More individual support is available upon request. Mentors, coaching, and peer groups can be arranged. The Rev Canon Julian Bowers has been appointed as Adviser in Clergy Care and Counselling. One aspect of the role is to be available as a consultant to any clergy who might be seeking or would welcome short-term or one-off supervision in their pastoral work perhaps relating to specific pastoral situations which may be difficult, taxing or complex. Such consultation is totally confidential (within normal limits). Julian may be contacted on or by on revjbowers@gmail.com A Reflective Conversation (ARC) is available for anyone, ordained or lay, who would benefit from an informal, confidential discussion on situations or issues relating to conflict or difficulties within working relationships. This is not meant to be counselling, but to serve as a sounding board as you explore possible ways forward. Informal mediation between parties can be offered if required. 6 October & November Leadership in Anxious Times Date: Wednesday 12 October Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Bouverie Court Cost: Free (lunch included) How can leaders develop selfconfidence in the midst of those anxious about change? We will explore the issues in a mix of theory and practice. There will be an opportunity to map out and reflect on a case study from your own ministry, and to listen to Edwin Friedman on video teaching on leadership and systems theory Speaker: Liz Holdsworth is Director of Training for the diocese and has a special interest in how people and groups can work better together. She is trained in conflict resolution and mediation. Building Courage Date: Wednesday 30 November Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Corby (location to come) Cost: Free (lunch included) Leadership is often messy and it s impossible to please everyone. Change can feel risky and without any guarantees of a successful outcome. We will explore what we mean by courage and why leading courageously matters in building healthy churches. Speaker: Revd James Lawrence is the Leadership Principal at CPAS. He teaches and trains on leadership and evangelism in the UK and abroad. He is passionate about resourcing the local church to be well led and mission focused.

7 January & February Loving your Muslim Neighbour Date: Saturday, 21 January Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: St Mark s, Peterborough Cost: Free (bring your own lunch) A day for those who already have a basic knowledge of Islam (we suggest you read for the necessary details). We will look at the differences between Christianity and Islam, an overview of Muslim contact with the UK, the war on terror, and how Christians should respond. There will exploration on the balance between cohesion and conversion. Speaker: Revd Tom Wilson is the Director of St Philip s Centre, Leicester, which is dedicated to developing better relationships between faith communities. He has particular expertise in Islam. Just Mission: Practical Politics for Local Churches Date: Tuesday, 14 February Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Bouverie Court Cost: Free (lunch included) How can we embed social justice in the mission of our parish? Together we sill explore how we can tackle injustice and hold local decision makers to account. There will be a mix of input, case studies, and discussion to give a practical approach to small p politics and the next step for a parish to explore. Speaker: Dr Helen Cameron was Director of Research at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. She is now Head of Public Affairs for The Salvation Army. She is the author of a number of books on practical theology.

8 Leading from the Second Chair Date: Saturday, 25 February Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Bouverie Court Cost: Free (lunch included) Some people will always be those who serve others in overall leadership. Others will go on to become a first chair leader. This day identifies some of the common issues for those in the second chair, explores how to work with those tensions, and offers a forum to share concerns and struggles. Although open to all ministers, we particularly invite bookings from SSMs, MSEs, and LLMs. Speaker: Revd Peter Mackenzie has been in full-time ministry for 27 years. He is currently vicar of St John with St James, West Ealing, London and a Ministry Partner with CPAS. March & April Resilience Date: Tuesday, 7 March Time: 9.30am to 5pm Venue: Bouverie Court Cost: of your CMD allowance (lunch included) The challenges of church leadership can make it difficult to sustain personal wellbeing. This day is designed to cultivate resilience and to help support a healthy work-life balance. You will be helped to develop strategies to manage and reduce stress, and to develop a personal resilience plan. Speaker: InterHealth is an international charity dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of development and mission workers, including church leaders.

9 Bishop s Bible Day Date: Saturday, 18 March Time: 9.30am to 4pm Venue: Northampton High School for Girls Cost: 5 donation requested; bring your own lunch The Old Testament for the Church and World Today A day of studying the Bible with Bishop Donald. There will be two addresses from Bishop Donald and a variety of workshops on offer. 10 Regional Courses In partnership with our sister dioceses, residential courses are offered which cover particular training issues. These are very popular so please book your place early. Incumbency Skills Dates: 31 January to 2 February 2017 Venue: High Leigh, Herts EN11 8SG For: Anyone who has been appointed to a first incumbency in the previous 6 to 9 months. The three day conference will work on some of the practical skills required to lead a parish. Cost: Free, but numbers are limited Booking: On bookings@peterborough-diocese.org.uk New Posts Dates: 9 to 11 May 2017 Venue: Belsey Bridge, Ditchingham NR35 2DZ For: Anyone who has been in a new post for 6 to 18 months. The three day conference is an opportunity for you to share with others, explore your new context, and set some aims and objectives.
