1 CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH The Clarion Mission Statement: Christ Lutheran Church exists to...continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with members, community & the world. August 1, 2013 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Dear Friends in Christ, I had the privilege of driving 6 of our High School aged youth (although, two of them enroll in college this month!) to San Antonio for the LCMS National Youth Gathering in July. This was my first time acting as a chaperone for something like this, and my first time attending a Youth Gathering. I had some apprehension, but I was terribly excited. (Just for some perspective: there were over 25,000 people there from all over the world, celebrating their faith in Jesus Christ! I took my kids to the Amarillo Zoo once. That is about as close as I have come to doing something like this.) One day, during a rare quiet moment, I glanced at the event evaluation surveys that we would be asked to fill out. The question that grabbed my attention was Do you consider this event worth the cost to you and your congregation (dollars, time, planning, preparing )? At first, I considered the cost. It was a lot. There were hours spent on preparation, hours spent planning, the van rental, the drive and the things that kids missed out on in order to attend. There was some fear in going and facing all of the unknowns: would our group get along? Would we be kept safe? Would it all be worth the price, work and effort? Perhaps you have had a similar experience in deciding whether or not to lead Sunday school, attend Bible study or worship, or lead volunteers to help clean up someone s yard. The truth of the matter is that if God has provided you the means to attend a convention like we did, lead people in the Word, lead a volunteer effort, or even if God has blessed you with any talent at all to put to use toward the benefit of anyone, it is worth it because of the cost that God has paid for you. You are a forgiven child of God because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God s love for you makes you and your work in the Name of the Lord worth it. There might be a cost (dollars, effort, courage, overcoming fears ), but you are backed by a God who has overcome death itself so that you can have everlasting life. God grant you all that you need to do the things He is leading you to do. Yours in Christ, Pastor Grunklee We will be having an ICE CREAM SOCIAL for our 7th through 12th grade youth. We will meet at the church Tuesday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. for fellowship and me in the Word. Then go for ice cream. Please pick your kids up at 8:30 p.m. from the church.

3 DONATIONS Please remember to drop off hygiene products and used Christian literature in the box located in the kitchen. DVDS AND CDS AVAILABLE There are CDs and DVDs of previous worship services that are available for you on the north table in the narthex. There are large print bulletins available each Sunday. Just see an Usher! PRAY FOR YOUR TEEN! I pray that will do nothing out of selfish ambition, but in humility value others above himself/herself not looking to his/her own interests but to the interest of others. LUTHERAN STUDENT CENTER If anyone is interested in learning more about the LSC and/or might be willing to serve on the board, our next meeting is Monday, August 5th at 5:30 p.m. All are invited to attend! NEWS FROM OUR LIBRARY Kimberly Jarrett Because of so many donations, our library continues to expand and the number of books in circulation is steadily growing. Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. He was executed in 1945 for his part in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Some Survived by Manny Lawton An eyewitness account of the Bataan Death March and the men who lived through it. SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATIONS It is hard to believe that it is time to start collecting school supplies for our LSSS foster families, but school is truly "just around the corner". A box will be available in the Narthex. We will invite our foster families to the foster office around mid August to "shop"; thank you for always being so supportive of our foster children. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you for the gift of $ for our Coins for Cowboys campaign t, given through your VBS offering. Like a warm hug, your support is a wonderful blessing to the children at Texas Boys Ranch. The money itself helps us meet the expenses associated with raising our big family of 32 children and 8 house parents. Your gift is a blessing and encourages our staff. Thank you for providing them with the necessities, the constancy, the caring, and the commitment that children need from adults. The lives that are changed as the boys come to know the Lord will pay dividends today, tomorrow, and throughout eternity. And for that we are most grateful. Sincerely, John Sigle Executive Director GRUNKLEE DIAPER SHOWER We will be having a MANLY diapers and wipes party for Pastor and Stephanie Grunklee s soon-to-arrive kiddo. It will be on Friday, August 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at the Jennings house at th Street (84th and Indiana). All men are invited, entry fee is a package of diapers and/or wipes. (If you can, bring a gift receipt so that diapers can be exchanged as the baby gets bigger). Pizza will be served, please bring your own beverages. Please contact Brooks Jennings at (brooksandbecky@hotmail.com) or Rodney Donahue at with any questions and to RSVP. A great kid s resource: A program brought to you by Lutheran Hour Ministries.

4 A NOTE FROM PARENT S DAY OUT Betsy Fischer, PDO Director The teachers and I have been busy getting ready for the new PDO school year. After a lot of thought, we decided to use the Peanuts Gang to help us with our theme for the year Happiness is.. We need your help once again to help decorate the halls with Snoopy and his friends. Please be on the lookout for anything (Peanuts themed) that will bring a smile to the children s face. Thank you always for your help!! Our first day of class is on Tuesday, August 27, beginning at 9:00 a.m. If you are interested in our program, we still have openings available, so please call the Church Office at CHRISTIAN GROWTH NEWS Jackie Watkins and Candy Schoppa Once again, Candy and I wish to sincerely thank all of the willing hearts of our VBS volunteers. You made it a wonderful experience for the children who attended each day. We did reach into the community and brought in some new faces. We d love to see them again. In connection with our Servant-hood theme, Matt and Christi Turner shared their mission experiences with our congregation. We were blessed to have them, and pray it stirs our hearts to even more outreaches. That could be personal or congregation wide to each other or elsewhere. We look forward to some sharing from the NYG attendees and perhaps the Ceta Glen campers as well. HEADS UP: WE HAVE A FAMILY EVENT ON THE HORIZON! When: Wednesday, August 7th Time: 7:00 p.m. Where: Fellowship Hall What: Movie Night: COURAGEOUS We will provide popcorn. It is up to individuals to bring their own beverage, blanket, pillows, easy chair, etc. Come and have a good time! SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED!
