Longer Days The Lenten Season (or Lent for short) is now before us. As the year progresses we see a lengthening of days, thus where we get the name lenten from its Old English origins. Though the name reflects the outward characteristics of the earth s seasons, the meaning of Lent in the Church itself is something quite different. Early on in the Church, Christians set aside the time leading up to holy week for deeper faith contemplation. As Christ s disciples they reflected on God s work in baptism and the hope that comes through our Lord s suffering, death and resurrection. Many observed this time with a 40 day fast. (But Pastor, Ash Wednesday to Easter is longer than 40 days. Why? That s true, but the Sundays are Festival days of Christ s resurrection, and are not counted. So the fasts were not observed on Sundays.) This fast varied greatly from region to region, and in some Catholic traditions we still see that Fridays bear a common element, such as the eating of meat to be restricted to fish. Many Christians around the world continue some sort of fast by intentionally going without, or depriving themselves from a personal want, in order to willingly embrace a sense of suffering as an aid to remember Christ s humility and work, and for their prayers. (For more information on fasting, see Matthew 6.) In the fast the focus is never on the work of the individual, but on Christ, and how man does not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. (Deuteronomy 8:3) If you choose to fast or not this Lenten Season is entirely between you and God. No doubt, fasting can make for some longer days, but typically they are well worth it. In order to help you get thinking about Lent, fasting, and the overall scope of this season in general, consider the following text from the book of Hebrews, Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. "The Vine Speaks" by Cindy Steinbeck is our subject of study. It is a wonderfully written and thought-provoking study. The author will be the main speaker for the LWML convention to be held in Lubbock this coming summer. All are welcome to come and enjoy. 5 LUTHERAN STUDENT CENTER (LSC) NEWS The spring semester is rapidly approaching! If you would be interested in providing a Sunday evening meal during the spring semester, please let me know if you or your church group would like to sign up for one or more of the following dates: Feb 28, Apr 3, Apr 10, Apr 24, May 1, May 8, May 15. Thank you! WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY This year, we will be doing an in-depth study based on a Max Lucado book, He Chose the Nails. This study is 15 sessions long. In February, we will start meeting once a month on the second Wednesday of each month through May, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Everyone is welcome. We will watch a couple of videos that go with the study and we might occasionally listen to some inspirational music that was especially written for this study. 8 LUBBOCK UPBRING (THE NEW LSS) ADVISORY BOARD NEWS FOSTER KIDS (FIT) - The FIT offices will be moving by January 30 th to a new location on University just up from Target. At present they have 48 kids with 55 being the budget number. There will be four placements mid-january. State rules have changed and there will no longer be any homes with more than six kids. This new rule has affected five of their homes. FIT is working with Mary Lee Franklin and St. Paul Lutheran in Plainview to make birthday boxes so each foster kid will have something for their birthday. HEALTH FOR FRIENDS (HFF) Due to the move to our new facility and the snow, only 79 clients were seen in the clinic during December. However, over 7,000 clients were seen for the year. During 2016, there were 331 participants in the glucose test strip program and 43 glucometers were given out for just over $300. There were 253 people assisted during the year with their prescriptions for a total of $6,162. A grant for $3,500 for prescription assistance and $4,000 for the glucose strip program was received. The grant will assist the lowest income patients. Tami Washington, HFF, has been invited to speak again at Lubbock Christian. The United Way luncheon will be held January 28. NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE (NH) Utility assistance was given to 4,731 people for a total just under one million dollars. Nearly 17,000 individuals were assisted for a total value of 1.1 million dollars for NH received $6,500 for utility assistance from the Anderson Foundation and $1,000 for prescriptions and $6,000 for food vouchers from the Lubbock Area Foundation. This should take care of our food vouchers for the coming year. The CEAP grant should be coming soon so they can probably begin helping people around the first of February STATE BOARD The new representative on the UPBRING State Board from this area is Wood Franklin. SPRING FLING This will be the 25 th Annual Spring Fling on April 1, 2016 at the McKinzie- Merket Center on the Texas Tech campus.
