1 RED LODGE COMMUNITY CHURCH, UCC Shalom Charles Aurand, III, Pastor Lynette Coleman, Editor Checking in with Pastor Chuck Do not let your adorning be external the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God s sight is very precious. ~ 1 Peter 3:3-4 I was in a Red Lodge restaurant today patiently waiting in line to place my order. A woman in front of me received her food and then stated quite pointedly to the wait staff that she did not approve of their choice of body jewelry (piercings). To the wait staff s credit, they took the insult very calmly and quietly. The grace of God was amazing within both of these employees. For my own part, I was so shocked and taken aback by the comment from this local middle-aged woman, that words failed me. I made my order, got my food, and left stunned. It wasn t until I had driven off that I realized what I could have and should have said. My church doesn t judge our choices in personal jewelry; you are welcome in the Community Church. The author of First Peter reminds us that beauty shouldn t be external only. Beauty is much more about the heart, and having a gentle and quiet spirit. The New Testament does not say that we cannot adorn our bodies; rather it is about having the Spirit of the welcoming Christ within us. Honestly, does God care about our tattoos, rings, bangles, piercings, haircuts, clothes, or hair dye? Of course not. I am so proud of our church s absolute stand of gracious and extravagant welcome. As Red Lodge swells with workers and tourists flocking back to our little town in the Mountains, may we see and celebrate the imperishable beauty within each person we meet. Pastor Chuck Aurand ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GriefShare is a video and support group program for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. 4 Church Council Minutes May 10, 2016 In Attendance: Sharon Roat, Shirlee Quinn, Dixie McCampbell, Edna Bomar, Pat Bomar, Jay West, Pastor Chuck Aurand. The meeting was called to order in the Upper Room at 5:00 pm with opening prayer by Pat Bomar. The minutes of the last meeting were approved subject to clarification on the amount of outstanding expenses to be paid on sanctuary improvements. Sharon Roat, Financial Secretary, reported that training Alicia Angell as Assistant Financial Secretary is progressing well. Shirlee Quinn, Treasurer, presented the April Financials and noted that the approved deficit budget was being met.. Pastor Chuck presented the Pastor s Report. He indicated that attendance YTD was up by approximately 11%. There was a discussion about Christian Education and the desire to start having Vacation Bible School again this summer. In the past this was done in conjunction with the Lutheran Church. There was a continuing discussion about the implementation of electronic giving and the implications for record keeping. The Grief Share program is going well with an average of ten people in attendance. A new Bible discussion group headed by Pastor Chuck and Don Hamilton will be held at 4:30 pm on Wednesdays. Likewise, a program of meditation will be led by the Reverends Aurand on Sunday mornings from 7:15 to 8:00 am. Pat Bomar, Moderator, reported that there was a major effort underway to recruit a new Vice-moderator. Edna Bomar reported for the Diaconate and discussed ongoing activities including the implementation of the new Welcome Packets. Jay West reported for Facilities Management on items including the bell tower, deacon s closet, radon monitoring, exterior improvements and the peace pole. Under old business, Pastor Chuck reported that the technology review was progressing more slowly than earlier anticipated due to overlapping equipment and software complexities and the need for a committee of skilled volunteers to spearhead the project. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on June 14 th at 5:00 pm in the Upper Room. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Pat Bomar
