2 Serving in the name of Christ. GENEROUS AND CARING CFC DONORS EFFECTIVE AND TRUSTED CHARITIES CHANGED LIVES AROUND THE WORLD COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN Allows federal employees to donate to the charity of their choice CHRISTIAN SERVICE CHARITIES Helps charities raise mission-critical funds through the CFC CHARITIES YOU KNOW AND TRUST Fight poverty, hunger, abuse, disease, broken families and separation from God OUR MISSION OUR VISION OUR ENDS GOAL To glorify God by facilitating the inclusion of Christian charities you know and trust in charitable giving opportunities and providing services for the success of other charitable federations. Staying a step ahead in a changing charitable giving environment, while becoming the most cost effective and respected organization at connecting CSC members and other charities with donors across America. Greater giving (in both number of donors and total donations) for a greater number of Christian charities that we know and trust. SErving In the Name of Christ 2016 Annual Report Page 2
3 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, It has been my privilege to serve Christian Service Charities on the Board of Directors since During the past year I have served as President/Chair of the Board. The Board of Directors is an active and engaged board serving the staff, members and their constituents. The board is proud of the accountability and transparency that Christian Service Charities demonstrates at all levels. The board operates in the context of Policy Governance. Throughout the year we monitor the policies for compliance and progress. I am pleased to report that the staff has served diligently and with excellence in meeting the established board policies. The board initiated a major investment in auditing our technology for security after the hacks of OPM and other government agencies. We are pleased to report we have made progress in protecting Christian Service Charities constituencies and members with a secure platform. We will monitor IT security and other policies regularly to maintain compliance in the years ahead as well. Christian Service Charities is committed to helping its member charities and their constituents every step of the way. The board and the staff continue to work hard to lower expenses so that each member charity can make the greatest ministry impact possible. The attached annual report will show that the services being provided have increased while expenses have decreased. The board is grateful and congratulates the Christian Service Charities staff for their diligent and consistent stewardship. Fiscal 2016 was the beginning of our work in private sector workplace campaigns. In collaboration with Community Health Charities we are working to bring our member charities to workplace donors in the private sector. While a challenge for Christian ministries to enter these campaigns we are finding entrepreneurial ways to help both our members and workplace donors to participate with charities that they know and trust through Christian Service Charities. Thank you for your role in furthering the work of Christian Service Charities, its member charities and their respective constituencies around the globe. Respectfully submitted, Royce Bervig President, Chair, CSC Board of Directors Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. 4 A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Dear Members, One of many highlights of the year was our Annual Conference. As the philanthropy arena shifted from an impact focus to a cause focus I was delighted to welcome Derick Feldman, author of Cause for Change, join us. His session was a highlight in helping our members understand how an emerging generation thinks about supporting a nonprofit cause. One outcome of Derick s influence on CSC is the upcoming revision of our website to focus on issues that donors are passionate about. The collaboration with the second largest federation in private sector workplace campaigns was a major step forward for us in increasing participation in campaigns and increasing pledges. Community Health Charities serves more than 1300 private sector corporations in the U.S. Through our work with CHC we have entered 43 of our charity members into a number of private sector campaigns. The next step in the expansion of this effort is creating causes that include our members. The causes will allow donors to give to the specific cause they are interested in and the donations will be shared by the charities listed in that particular grouping. As companies move in this direction I am excited that CSC is at the forefront of the effort. The CFC has continued to shrink in donor participation and donations. The CFC also saw a shift of donations from National/International charities to local; local charities saw an 8% increase in pledges. Christian Service Charities continued to be in the top ten federations as number 6 in total pledges. Staff Thomas Youngblood Chief Executive Officer Matambira Makanda Treasurer, CFO, HR Director Lorna Campbell Clarke, IOM Director, Marketing & Member Services Jackie Davis Marketing & Member Services Coordinator Fiscal 2016 will go down in history as the year that we learned patience in waiting for OPM to release specifics on the changes for the CFC in 2017! Many of the changes are excellent and will be very encouraging to donors. Potentially creating a stronger appeal to millennials in the federal workforce should increase participation. Some of the changes will also bring relief to the work of charities in applying for the CFC each year. It is our privilege to coach and serve Christian Service Charities members to greatest success in navigating the changes. We will continue to provide guidance on these changes. As the fiscal year came to a close I announced to the Board of Directors that I would retire effective December 31, After more than 40 years of service and work in the nonprofit sector I decided that it was time to step aside and support the board in seeking the next leader for CSC. With nearly ten years at CSC, I have grown more and more passionate about the specific and various missions our members successfully conduct around the world every day in the name of Jesus. I will continue to support the efforts of CSC and pray for our donors that faithfully support our members. I believe the very best years are ahead as CSC will continue to be the best group of ministries in the Combined Federal Campaign and other workplace campaigns providing donors with the very best choices to support for global impact. I believe that CSC will continue to serve its members with excellence at the lowest cost. Sarah Davis Marketing & Member Services Associate Lara Maky Finance Associate Thank you for your support and encouragement over these years. Thomas L. Youngblood Chief Executive Officer Pieta West Finance Associate Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13: Annual Report Page 4

7 Highlights of our year As the old adage says, if you re not moving forward, you will begin to fall back. There s no such thing as standing still. In a year of uncertainty in the Combined Federal Campaign, Christian Service Charities pushed ahead, increasing outreach to potential donors, improving service to member charities, and facilitating greater giving for charities you know and trust. Among the highlights: New private workplace giving opportunities through Neighbor To Nation established with CHC. Welcomed six new members into the Federation: American Bible Society Awana Lifeline Ministries CURE Grace International Operation Mobilization USA Rob Morrison Project Continued track record of excellence as largest Christian federation in the 2016 CFC and 6th-largest federation overall. Raised $5.5 million for some of America s finest Christian ministries Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4 CSC processed approximately 303 event invitations and/or materials requests for CFC and Pennsylvania SECA campaign events and attended over 60 CFC events during the 2015 solicitation period Held a successful bi-annaul conference in June in Colorado Springs which inlcuded speakers from CSC members, OPM officials, state representatives and partner federations.
