Challenged by Faith to end Poverty 2009 Annual Report
Message from the CEO 2009 and Beyond Dear Friends of NCMI, NCMI is active wherever in the world we can bring needs and resources together to mitigate human suffering caused by poverty. Whether programs for mentoring at-risk youth in the United States or drilling wells for clean water in Africa, our goal is the same to support the global compassion mission of the Church of the Nazarene through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. NCMI is the link between donors and partner organizations on the ground closest to human need. For instance, we provide the support needed to be sure that a troubled teenager in the U.S. has a chance to succeed and a health clinic in Swaziland has clean water to prevent disease. This we believe is the good news that is a result of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As in our tagline we are Challenged by Faith to End Poverty. As a faith-based organization we also respond to those who are spiritually poor. We understand the suffering caused by hopelessness. Through NCMIsponsored programs, we are eager to be sure that spiritual as well as physical needs are met. NCMI is constantly evaluating its programs to insure that our donors contributions are used efficiently and effectively to change lives. We pledge to be a good steward of your trust and generosity. Sincerely, Tom Nees Dr. Tom Nees A graduate of Northwest Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary, Tom is an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene. After serving as Director of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in the US and Canada and Director of Multicultural Ministries, Tom became the director of Mission Strategy responsible for denominational mission planning. In 2003, he was elected director of the USA/Canada Mission and Evangelism Department (UCME). There he provided education, training and resources for over 5,000 congregations. He is the author of: Compassion Evangelism, 1996; The Changing Face of the Church: From American to Global, 1997; Dirty Hands-Pure Hearts: Sermons and Conversations with Holiness Preachers, 2006; and Best Practices of Growing Churches, 2007.

1980: The Church of the Nazarene repurposed its response to global hunger and disaster as Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. The Hunger and Disaster Fund became the Compassionate Ministry Fund. This was more than a name change. It represented an intentional, organized effort to alleviate human suffering caused by global poverty. 1992: NCMI s first annual report showed relationships established with 17 nongovernmental organizations worldwide. NCMI raised $251,182 to complete its work in the United States and abroad. 2000: NCMI worked with 151 organizations in 140 countries worldwide. Total revenue reached $2,334,059. NCMI s tagline was linking resources with needs worldwide History 1990: The Church created, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc., a separate nonprofit support organization to attract funds from sources such as the United States government, foundations and corporations which would not grant funds to the ministries of compassion. 1995: NCMI defined its mission so that Our resources help people break the frustrating cycle of poverty and disease. Our people help develop the skills and opportunities they need to be healthier, better educated and more self-sufficient. Our volunteers and staff are part of the solution.
0 2003: NCMI updated its mission to NCMI provides crisis assistance world-wide, including food, healthcare and rebuilding. Promotes long-term solutions to poverty through training, gifts-in-kind and micro-enterprise, economic and community development projects. Total revenue for the year was more than $5 million. 2009: For 16 years NCMI has received donations from employees who were given the opportunity by their employers to make a tax-deductible gift by payroll deduction. Workplace giving is one way to support the ministry of the Nazarene Church. Since 1993 these donors have given more than $2M toward responding to and preventing human suffering resulting from poverty and disaster. 2006: NCMI received several multi-year grants totalling over $12 million, Including a $9 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Total income for the year exceeded $7.1 million. NCMI entered 2007 with net assets of over $2 million. NCMI updated its tagline to challenged by faith to end poverty. Project Restoring Hope cleans, repairs and rebuilds 1,855 houses using 4,611 volunteers who gave 156,082 hours of their time for hurricane Katrina relief. Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc Mission To respond to and prevent human suffering resulting from poverty and disaster. The NCMI tag Challenged by Faith to end Poverty, expresses its mission to respond to the causes as well as the results of poverty as an expression of the Christian faith as understood and practiced by members of the Church of the Nazarene. NCMI accomplishes its mission through collaborative and cooperative partnerships between non-denominational donors for the support of relief and development projects designed and directed by local leaders in over 150 countries where the C/N through NCM is actively engaged. Vision NCMI seeks to be an effective intermediary, bringing human needs and resources together to advance the relief and development mission of the Church of the Nazarene through NCM.
Integral Partnership While NCM and NCMI have been organized by the Church of the Nazarene for the same end, they are necessarily distinct. Integral partnership NCM exists as the relief and development arm of the Church of the Nazarene. As such it organizes responses to natural disasters, designs programs such as Child Sponsorship and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and NDR (Nazarene Disaster Response). It deploys staff and volunteers to various Nazarene church agencies including approved nonprofits and NGOs. Internationally, NCM sponsors a network of 30 non-government organizations (NGOs) and domestically over 170 faith-based organizations (FBOs) developing humanitarian projects to address poverty issues. NCM may be thought of as promoting faith to end poverty while the NCMI motto is challenged by faith to end poverty. The difference recognizes that funds from U.S. government agencies received by NCMI cannot be used to promote faith, or what is called proselytization. Nevertheless, it is appropriate for NCMI to acknowledge the faith that inspires people to volunteer and contribute to end suffering caused by poverty. NCM and NCMI are motivated by the conviction that empathy and compassion are moral mandates for the common good. NCMI exits to support missions and projects initiated by the Church of the Nazarene, thus having the role as an intermediary. As an intermediary, NCMI has the capacity to identify sources of significant funding and facilitates that funding for NCM s network of agencies and their projects. In certain instances NCMI may be asked or required to perform activities and/or employ personnel to support and lead a mission. NCMI as an Intermediary When NCMI agrees to accept funds from the U.S. government agencies or other agencies, it acts as an intermediary guaranteeing that funds are used for their intended purpose. This places responsibility on NCMI for M&E - Monitoring and Evaluation. Field personnel understand that NCMI representatives are necessarily required to audit financial records, observe the delivery of services and record outcomes. Unlike other faith-based intermediaries, which function as parallel or para-church organizations, NCMI is committed to working with and through the existing infrastructure of the Church of the Nazarene.
Grants Received in 2009 NCMI was instrumental in obtaining a $49,000 sub-grant from USAID Nigeria through Food for the Hungry for NCM Nigeria to expand HIV/AIDS prevention activities. NCMI received ocean freight valued at $45,750 to ship humanitarian aid to countries in the CIS from the US State Department. NCMI was awarded a $501,859 grant from ICAP to support centralization of HIV/AIDS clinical care and treatment services in the Manzini Region of Swaziland. NCMI was awarded a $3,251,170 grant from the Office of Justice Programs for the NCMI Mentoring Initiative. Implementing innovative at risk youth mentoring services in 10 sites across 6 regions with 7 additional capacity building and planning sites. Grants NCMI was awarded a $764,946 grant from the Africa Coca Cola Foundation for Year One of a three year project that will generate 50 solar wells and/or repair and remediate boreholes, that will produce 530 million liters of clean water in the first three years of the project, 300 trained community trainers, 50,000 educated individuals in environmentally sound water practices, sanitation and hygiene, 50 Garden Projects and 50 Service Learning projects designed to mobilize community residents to support the infrastructure of the wells. Mentoring NCMI, an intermediary for 178 non-profits (Compassionate Ministry Centers-CMCs) serving at-risk youth nationwide, seeks to expand an existing mentoring movement among CMCs to promote and institutionalize a wide range of mentoring best practices and to double the number of mentors and mentees to be served by the participating CMCs across six US regions over three years. Ten implementing CMCs will receive extensive capacity building, training, and technical assistance to refine and expand existing mentoring services across a range of mentoring models (peer, school, center, church, family, community, and skill-based models) and funds (an average of $70,000/year) to implement best practices for both the mentoring model and documentation of outcomes. Six additional CMCs will receive planning and capacity building services and $5,000/year to support technical assistance needs to select and implement best practices. The range of mentoring models and innovations will be identified and enhanced to meet best practices standards with a special emphasis on improving the number of mentors recruited, trained and retained while increasing the recruitment, retention, and changes in outcomes for the at-risk youth enrolled in each program. Progress will be measured against the required short and long term program objectives.
Faith for Water in Swaziland Living Water For many people across Swaziland, life revolves around the daily challenge of finding enough clean water for basic needs, especially the rural areas where large water sources have not been developed. In July of 2008 a team from Oklahoma Bethany First Church of the Nazarene (BFC), traveled to Swaziland. During that trip one team member looked up the hill at the primary school and saw a tall windmill that was not turning. He was told by teachers and community members that the windmill water pump was broken but the water source beneath it was still strong. The idea of water being just below the surface and yet not accessible to the needy community created a holy discontent in this team member. He began researching the best way to get the water to the communities. In March 2009 they returned to assess the other 16 Nazarene clinics and surrounding communities. At the same time The Coca-Cola Foundation was looking for a group that had a vision and a plan to bring water to Swaziland. Jim and Colleen Copple, BFC members and grant writers for NCMI, connected Coca-Cola, NCM Swaziland, NCMI, Swaziland s RFM Nazarene hospital, and BFC. The plan that had already been developed by BFC s assessment in March became the basis for the proposal to Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola awarded a grant to NCMI in July Twelve Nazarene clinics and communities will receive a solar water system with associ ated water harvesting and sanitation systems during the remainder of 2009 and early Each system is to serve the clinic, the school, and church on the mission station, and the community, providing water to gardens operated by HIV support groups initiated by Swaziland s Naza rene HIV/AIDS Task Force. The project is being implemented by NCM-Swaziland under the leadership of Beauty Makhubela, NCM-Swaziland director, Anna Mdluli, community mobilization coordinator, and Sabelo Dlamini, training officer. Clean water for several communities in Swaziland has become a reality because of the strong faith exhibited by many; the faith of one team member who felt a holy urgency about water, the faith of a team who prayed around a broken windmill, and whose continued prayers multiplied the supply of water throughout the country. Some times the glory of God comes in the tangible form of clean water in the name of Jesus - the living water. --Brent & Michaele LaVigne, Mission Corps volunteers for NCN News-Africa
