2 Feeling the Flow By Reverend Philip Price, Interim Senior Pastor Life is being a surfer riding the cusp of where chaos meets order and where choice meets fate. We live with roots and wings. We are grounded in limitation, yet our minds soar into unlimited skies. We are both human and divine. Our material roots become either a prison of limitation or a launching pad, giving rise to our spiritual wings. Spiritual growth is the movement from the limits of our material grounding to the flight of visions and dreams. Growing in natural terms seems to be about getting bigger, taller, or having more. A growing bank account has more in it this month than it had last month. In spiritual terms, growing means expanding the boundaries of limitation. It means being a bigger river. It is understanding that I am a channel for unbounded possibility (some people call this God) allowing the unbounded to flow easily through my life. I can be a free flowing river that allows Spirit to flow through me, or I can be choked up and shut off. A river does not claim the water flowing through it as a possession. It lets water flow through it. We are called to be filled with the spirit, but we are to be filled as a river is filled rather than as a pond is filled. In our natural state we all want to be bigger ponds. We tend to hold on to the water that comes our way, claiming it, getting legal title to it, protecting it and measuring our sense of worth by how big it gets. As we grow in spirit we discover that joy comes from being part of the flow. The prayer, "Thy will be done on earth," is realized as we find our place in this sacred flow. God be with you as you find your wings, as you experience the joy of being a river! Blessings, Phil Thank you for coming out and celebrating with us! We had a truly wonderful worship followed by great food, games, and togetherness! It was amazing to see all those families up front as we recognized those baptized in the last five years and presented Bibles and gifts to our young people. We are glad that you came out to join us to Be a Piece of Peace on September 18th. We hope to see you again soon! 2
3 On the Lighter Side Nine-year-old Jeremy s mother asked the boy what he had learned in Sunday school. Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he and his engineers built a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then he used his walkie talkie t o r a d i o b r o a d c a s t headquarters and call in an air strike. They sent in bombers to blow up the bridge, and all the Israelites were saved. Now Jeremy, is that really what your teacher taught you? his mother asked. Well, no. Mom, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you d never believe it. Pause and Ponder If you are daunted by the tasks, simply remember and embrace these beautiful words from The Talmud (collection of volumes containing Jewish civil and canonical low): Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world s grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it. Do-It-Yourself Messiah A Do-It-Yourself Messiah is an informal performance of Handel s Messiah in which the audience serves as an unrehearsed chorus, supported by soloists and musicians. Musicians will be provided through a generous grant from the Seyfang\Menker Music Fund. Our church is sponsoring a Do-It -Yourself Messiah on December 11, 2016 at 2 p.m. Please save the date!! We are asking for ushers, hosts/hostesses for the musicians, and assistance in selling scores and setting up the Narthex if needed. Peace Café will be offering limited refreshments before and at intermission. We hope you will consider helping in any way for this allchurch community event. We have contacted churches, high schools, colleges and singing groups. For more information and to volunteer, please contact Priscilla Hook at Let s sing together to the Glory of God! Time Change Sunday November 6 Looking ahead to November please remember to turn your clocks BACK one hour before you go to bed on Saturday, November 5th. 3 Expressions of Thanks for the National Youth Event From David Rudnicki: The National Youth Event was very fun. I thank Peace Memorial Church and its members who donated to make it possible for us to go. It is nice to know that I may have helped make a difference in someone s life. The best thing about the trip was not only Disney, but helping others that were in need. I was glad to be a part of the mission trip and all that came with it to make it happen. From Matt Rudnicki The National Youth Event was quite an amazing experience. The bus ride down to Florida was an adventure! Not only was the bus ride an experience, but we learned a lot about spreading the word of Jesus on this trip every time we went to worship twice a day. The best part was when we worked fo a non-profit company that helps people in poverty. By helping them with college to the simple things like getting groceries, we were doing the work of the Lord. Thank you Peace Memorial Church for helping us to be a part of this great mission. November Messenger Deadline Articles and news for the November issue of The Messenger are due into the office by Monday October 17th. The issue will be available for pickup on Sunday, October 30th.
4 Neighbors in Need October 2 The 2016 theme for NIN is "This We Believe" and connects the issue of child hunger to the work that UCC congregations are doing to serve their community and address this injustice. Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering. Life Line Screening Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at Peace memorial Church on November 4, Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and an osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take minutes to complete In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call or visit There are sign up appointment sheets in the Narthex and the church office. By signing up through the church you will receive a $10 discount when registering for either of the Complete Wellness Packages. World Communion Sunday October 2 World Communion Sunday is always observed on the first Sunday of October and is a time when Christians in every culture break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the head of the Church. It offers us a distinctive opportunity to experience Holy Communion in the context of the global community of faith. We will also be collecting for Neighbors in Need, a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. It is the day that we can express our connectedness and responsibility to our brothers and sisters in need. 4
5 More on Mental Illness By Vera Bayer Portions of the following article appeared in the Summer 2016, Issue No. 44, NAMI Voice Newsletter: As Summer gives way to Fall, we have a lot to reflect on and be grateful for, while remaining steadfast. Thanks to your support, we have raised mental health awareness in some very unique ways. Advocacy: We successfully employed the full power of national and grassroots advocacy efforts that resulted in the unanimous (53-0) passage of Mental Health Reform in the House Energy & Commerce Committee. NAMI advocates sent over 80,000 s and helped collect 230,000 petition signatures that prompted Congress to act now to help reform the broken mental health system. This was after unprecedented bipartisan discussions, which resulted in a balanced bill and a stronger version of H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. And thanks to your steady advocacy, the House voted to pass the bill on July 6! Awareness: The Empire State Building, Niagara Falls, and other landmarks throughout the country became symbols of hope as they were lit in green, the color of mental illness, which signifies hope and renewal, to show support for mental health. Outreach: NAMI received significant visibility by partnering with several celebrities and a major network. We held events in New York and Los Angeles to promote the Stigma Free initiative with celebrities. Fox Sports chose NAMI to raise awareness about mental health and promote our cause. If you are in need of help, remember the following places: 1. NAMI Southwest (708) for support, education and advocacy for persons with mental illness and their families. 2. Metropolitan Family Services Southwest (708) for counseling and mental health services. 3. Emergency Mental Healthcare Center (708) for 24/7 emergency mental health care.
