Within the community of Fairfax many things happen. School is returned to full swing (children are walking to and from school so please be cautious as you drive the streets). The Labor Day holiday starts us off this month. The same weekend we have our monthly celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Of course in there we remember the lives that were lost on 2001 in New York as religious extremists used commercial airplanes to perpetrate an attack on the people of this nation (I was in Dallas, TX working that day and looking forward to my birthday celebration when I got home from work). Do you remember where you were at when those attacks happened? What about how you felt? Was a certain group of God s creation suddenly diminished in your eyes because of the color of their skin, the clothes they wore, their nationality, or the faith traditions they adhered to? Jesus tells his disciples (and us today): - Rev. Roger Cary I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other. (John 13:34-35) 1 What does that love look like in real life one might well ask? I would suggest to each of us today that true love that glorifies God looks exactly how Jesus lived in that he gave his own life so that each of us, sinners that we were and are, might have new life and a life abundant. This may be difficult to grasp for some but I challenge you to remember the idea of Jubilee. A Sabbath year is based on a cycle of seven years. At the end of seven Sabbath cycles (49 years) a ram s horn is to be blown ushering in the 50 th year-the Jubilee Celebration. We find this same cycle of years when we read the question Peter (Cephas) had for Jesus in Matthew 18:21- Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Should I forgive as many as seven times? Jesus said, Not just seven times, but rather as many as seventy-seven times. 2 Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 Based on the footnote and various translations this works out to 490, or a ten-fold increase in the meaning of Jubilee. No longer is a simple 49 (or even 50) good enough, Jesus expands that ten times. Along with that we are reminded by Jesus to: You have heard that it was said, You must love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who harass you so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both the evil and the good and sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have? Don t even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing? Don t even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also you must be complete. (Matt 5:43-48) Friends, I know this is extremely difficult. I have trouble with forgiveness of this magnitude myself. But I also know that this is the way to a successful harvest, if only for our own life. Our month closes with the season of Fall or Autumn beginning on September 23 rd. This will bring us close to harvest time (if it has not already begun). I would suggest that we pray not only for a bountiful harvest on the farms in the area, but that we also pray that God s harvest will be bountiful as we are faithful to love others, even as God so loved us that Christ, God s flesh and blood, died for us while we were still in sin and despair and, so continue to nurture the growth God planted in this world. Lord of Creation, You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. The River of God has plenty of water; it provides a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered it so. You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops. you crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the wilderness become a lush pasture, and the hillsides blossom with joy. The meadows are clothed with flocks of sheep, and the valleys are carpeted with grain. They all shout and sing for joy! We had a wonderful response last year, let s see if we can do as well or better this year. Monetary donations are welcomed as well, leave with Darla or get to me. Thanks for all your support, Pam Davis REMINDER: September is the last month to collect kits for Festival of Sharing. We need more of the (August) Personal Hygiene kits and this next month is the Prison Kit month! Monetary donations also accepted. Pastor Roger Cary and Cindy Cary, Bob and Amy Sefrit attended the FRB Annual Gathering in Lincoln NE August 7-8. High lights of the event were visiting with members of other Growing Projects from around the United States and listening to guest speakers from Gaza and Colombia. In Gaza FRB is helping communities raise rabbits as a quick and nutritious food source. In Colombia, South America, FRB is assisting the Christian farmers in raising plants to produce cocoa as a cash crop as opposed to others in the country raising plants to produce cocaine.

Permit #10 Dear Friends in Fairfax, AUGUST 2015 THANKS What about Mom?? I can t even count the times I think about this as I meet or learn of MKs who are leaving the nest for the first time! It is difficult enough for an American mom (and dad) whose young adult grew up here and knows the culture. Usually this student can return home for breaks and holidays, so moms can get their kid fix, making favorite meals, sometimes meeting their son or daughter s new friends, even doing laundry for them can be a treat when you haven t seen them for awhile! Missing our boys when they left for college a year apart and dealing with the empty nest has been the hardest part of our 30 years in missionary service. We were not prepared for it! These parents were visiting the U.S. this summer, but were already dreading the fall separation. How my heart goes out to them! As you know, my main focus is on college-age MKs, but it is an added privilege and honor when I am able to meet and interact with their parents as well. Would you pray especially this month for the missionary parents you know, both those who are already separated and those who will be facing separation shortly? Thank you for your partnership! I m so thankful to have you on the Mu Kappa Ministry team as we serve whole families as well as MKs! And I m thankful for the moms who release their kids to our care!
