1 FAIRFAX MESSENGER JULY 2011 Fairfax United Methodist Church 305 N. Broadway P.O. Box 318 Fairfax, MO Office Hours: 8:00 am 12:00 pm Mon Thurs Office: Fax: Website: Sunday Worship: Sunday School - 9:30 am Worship - 10:30 am Channel 61 Broadcast - Tues. 4:00 pm Wednesdays: Promise Keepers - 6:00 am Pastor Roger Cary Study: Cell: fairfaxumc@fairfaxmo.net To our family at Fairfax UMC, As we begin our shared ministry with all of you, I would like to let you know a bit about myself and Julie. I grew up about 90 miles from Fairfax in Southeast Nebraska, just outside of Lincoln. My dad farmed; growing milo, wheat, and hay (alfalfa) as we also had a dairy operation that mainly featured Jersey cows. Along with the cows we had raised hogs at one time. My parents brought us up in a very religious home although not Methodist. I was raised and led into this journey called faith as an Assembly of God member. Upon graduation from high school I entered the U.S. Army spending the next 16-1/2 years traveling the world. I participated in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Julie was not my wife at the time. Julie grew up in Joliet, Illinois. She has 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Julie's dad still resides in Joliet. Her mother passed away at the age of 59 from breast cancer. Growing up I played some sports with my final year of sports being football at Lincoln Southeast High School under the coaching of Heisman Trophy winner Frank Solich. Yes I do bleed red and cream during college football season. After my time in the military I spent the next 10 years traveling the country working on cellular phone sites; doing everything from building the towers and installing the lines and antennas to managing the construction of cellular phone sites. At one point Julie and I lived in a 35 foot 5th wheel travel trailer for 5 years. Whenever I was out of work I would go back to driving a semi truck. After the telecommunications work ended we (Julie and me) purchased a small farm in the Ozarks (Ripley County) and settled down. We had a team of Percheron draft horses and built a wagon that we used to haul people around with. It was while living in the Ozarks that a couple invited us to a church singing. We became friends and then began attending the small Methodist church with them. This church was 126 years old and still had no running water or bathrooms. Outhouses can be brutally cold in the Ozarks winters. Julie had never made this faith connection and decision for Christ but one night at a singing, the tears poured out and she accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. I renewed Continued on page 2
2 Continued from page 1 my faith and we joined the Tucker United Methodist Church. The pastor of that church, a lay minister, Mrs. Elaine Burrows saw something in me and asked me to bring the message one sunday. At the end I was again told that I had something special and should seriously consider the path of ministry. I prayed and prayed, trying to get out of it, but it was here to stay. I had felt a call to ministry while I was still in high school and still felt that the time to answer the call was not then. My life took many twists and turns, many of which would make people cringe, but which I can see that God used those experiences to prepare me to be relatable to others. Currently I attend United Theological Seminary in a hybrid format (online and short periods of time at campus). This is one of the 13 United Methodist sanctioned seminaries and is an ideal situation for those of us that are in our second, third, or fourth careers. Julie is a stay at home spouse due to recent health problems. We are looking forward to sharing in all of the challenges and opportunities that you currently enjoy. Remember: God is good-all the time; and all the time-god is good. Peace and blessings, Pastor Roger and Julie Cary The United Methodist Women s Evening Edition met on Wed., June 8th at 7:00 pm in the church basement. Members present who enjoyed a delicious dessert provided by Amy Sefrit were: Sandy Burke, Amy Sefrit, Michele Hawkins, Martha Shaffer, and Gale Ball. The meeting was opened with prayer concerns. Amy Sefrit had been contacted to see if our church members would be willing to donate sandwiches or a meal to feed flood workers if we were needed. Amy offered to go get cheese, meat, bread and other items, and asked for assistance from others to help make sandwiches to give to sand baggers or workers during the flood. The group discussed hosting another Just Because Dinner again in the near future. Supplies needed for a flood buckets to assist in the flood clean will be discussed at our next meeting, too. For a couple years we have discussed selling T-shirts at Fairfax Fair Time. Michele Hawkins has offered to price the T- shirts at Tarkio Avalanche, and get back to the group. Following the brief meeting, members packed up most of the items from the church clean-up day and packed them up to take to the Salvation Army. The group decided that we did not have enough items for a garage sale or an auction. If we could sell some of the larger items on a consignment basis in someone s else auction, we may do that at a later date. $30 was collected for Karen Kirkland s missionary ministry, and prayer concerns were discussed. Our next meeting will be held in the church basement on Wednesday, July 13 th. Respectfully submitted, Gale Ball, Secretary At Fairfax UMC, July 17 th for the morning worship at 10:30 am with a meal following! I was taught to care for those around you as you would have them care for you. I strived to do this through out my life and also my business. Now in my retirement years, I felt lead by my Lord to take on this project of helping those in need. As I thought about helping others in need I realized that there is a great need for financial support. A volunteer without building material is a volunteer at a stand still. So now here I am embarking on a 9,300 mile journey on a 1937 COOP #2 tractor pulling a 20 ft. camper, driving in all 48 lower states, raising funds for CRWRC and FRB. Together with the Lord s help lets raise $$ for those in need. Thanks, Dave and Deb Wolfsen Dave is raising funds for CRWRC-Disaster Response Services, CRWRC Food Security Programs, and Foods Resource Bank.

7 Fairfax UMC is once again hosting the Live Simulcast with Beth Moore! Tickets are $20 (and that includes lunch) Saturday, September 10th 9:30 am 4:15 pm (doors open one hour before) The tickets are available through the church office , or any members of the team: Gale Ball, Charla Graves, Lois Wiley, Michele Hawkins, Brenda McLaughlin or Carla Smith. The event offers powerful messages that will challenge and encourage both veteran and first time participants to dig deeper into a more intimate relationship with God. Moore, whose books and studies, including David: Seeking A Heart Like His, Breaking Free and Esther: It s Tough Being a Woman, have been read by millions around the world, is known for her ability to apply biblical scripture to everyday life. Last year, more than 100,000 women, representing 8,400 churches, participated in the Living Proof Live simulcast event. This year s event provides the same inspiration, though with a new, unique message. We also need volunteers to help on committees. Please contact Charla Graves or Gale Ball if you would like to help or if you have any questions!
