2 A New Priestly Face for the Summer! An Interview The Reverend Canon John W. Kilgore, M.D. will be our supply priest for most of the summer, until our interim arrives, probably in August. He hails from St. Louis, Missouri, but is indeed a man of the world, having traveled extensively on six continents and having served as supply priest in Europe on several occasions. Fr. Kilgore s (or Father John as he likes to be called, he says Reverend is not a very good title for him as he is not very reverend!)) Xirst career was in medicine, holding Bachelor s, Masters in Public Health (emphasis in Epidemiology), and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Missouri. He did his internship, residency, and fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and has enjoyed a distinguished career as an invasive cardiologist in St. Louis, Missouri. He has also served in medical leadership having been Chief of Staff, Chief of Cardiology, and Medical Director of Cardiology over Xive hospitals in a Catholic healthcare system in the midwest. As a part of his involvement in the Order of St. John, what he describes as international philanthropy at its best, he visited the Holy Land in As a result of that trip he went into discernment for holy orders and was ordained priest in (A story he may well tell in more detail some day when among us ). He has served at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri where he regularly does a weekday Mass and assists the Dean with strategic planning, visioning, and civic and community relations. Since his ordination he has served in a dual role as priest and physician. When asked about that mix, he says, being a good priest and being a good physician, if done very well, are actually quite similar. The beginning of 2014 he stopped all things medical and is now focusing on his priestly vocation, leading a spirituality group in the St. Louis region (see website conxluencespirituality.org), and hosting retreats at Riverwoods, his 1830 s log home and chapel on the banks of the Missouri River. On occasion Father John has been asked to preach at St. Paul Within the Walls (the American church) in Rome, Italy. In partnership with Dr. Chip Helms, he has a farm in Rappahannock County near Sperryville and spends free time here when schedule permits. This is one of the prettiest places around, godly country! he says of the region, and thus the farm purchase here. Come on these Sundays- June 21 & 28 and July 5, 12, & 26- to hear and meet John. He will also be around some during the week.!2

3 Summer 2015 at Trinity by Mike Mahoney It is tempting to write that the summer of 2015 will be an interim before an interim, a transition to a transition. After all, Jenks will celebrate his last three services as our Rector and deliver his last three sermons on Sunday, May 31 st. There will follow a period an interim, certainly when supply clergy will celebrate and preach. We hope that period will not last much longer than through June and July. Soon thereafter, we should have on board our Interim Rector, our pastor and guide until our search process is complete and a call issued. Back to the summer: the fact is that the summer of 2015 will be much like every other summer at Trinity and especially like those summers when Jenks was away for both vacation and sabbatical. (Jenks will still be our Rector until July 31 st, but just as we have in the past when he was away, we hope not to have to call him.) Worship will continue, hymns will be sung, and collection plates passed. The ofoice will be open; volunteers will serve (we always need more!); preparations for the Dried Flower Sale and House Tour will be ongoing, fellowship will be evident; and so on. It is also a fact that summers at Trinity are different from the rest of the year. It may be easy at times to think, Oh dear, Jenks is barely gone and things are already changing. It is a temptation to resist. It is just summer. Mike Mahoney Senior Warden!3

4 Notes from the Rector's desk: As our time together draws to a close, many have expressed their appreciation for my ministry at and through Trinity and I am grateful for those comments. At the same time, there has been a consistent afxirmation of Trinity's impact on our community, especially from folks not a regular part of our Trinity fellowship. That afxirmation is for all of us, especially you! We tend to make a higher proxile of our outreach in other parts of God's world; yet Trinity does a great deal here at home as well. The ECW contributes from its House Tour and Flower Sale proceeds to many local groups, from Boy & Girl Scouts to Fire & Rescue to seniors. The Brotherhood supports Sharon Pyne in her work with seniors in our county. Through my discretionary fund your offerings Xill in many blanks. Our Outreach Committee impacts the Senior Center, Helping Hand housing repairs, and the CARE program. And we have been ready again and again to offer our facilities to groups who serve our community, from AA (40 years!) to scouts to yoga groups. It is particularly poignant when we host funerals and such for folks who have no church to which to turn. Additionally we have often functioned as a catalyst for new efforts. On this list we can place the medical rides program, the Rapphannnock Benevolent Fund, and the new Rappahannock Home effort. Of course, we must also include the myriad efforts of individual Trinitarians working in our community as God has called them. On this list go Fire & Rescue companies, the Food Pantry, the Backpack Program, Aging Together, the Lions Club, and Scouts. Every one of the lists above is partial, for we do an awful lot out there in our nearby world. Trinity's impact is broad and strong! As I go, I will be praying for Trinity as it continues its history of ministry both near and far, even as it continues to grow and celebrate its internal rich diversity and inclusion. To say "Thank you" for the shared journey in ministry of these past 42 years seems most inadequate. Yet it is what I feel so very strongly from the depths of my heart. Thank you! Merci! Danke! 5 Diocese awards $5,000 Mustard Seed Grant to Trinity for new St. Marc Toilet By Russ Collins Good News! The Diocese has awarded a $5,000 grant for the construction of a new outdoor toilet for the St. Marc School and Church in Troiun. NOT SO GOOD NEWS, we need another $2,700 to complete the project. Since becoming a partner of St. Marc after the 2010 earthquake, members of Trinity Washington have participated in or led 9 mission trips to St. Marc to further our relationship with the parishioners of St. Marc and people of Trouin. When Mary Frances lemat and Peggy Spillenkothen visited St. Marc in October, Pere Goursse, the Priest- In- Charge, asked for our help in replacing the existing outdoor toilet. It is not being used due to a number of problems, including drainage. A glance at a picture of the toilet says it all. As the majority of the students walk more than an hour each way to school, the need for a functioning toilet, even if only an outdoor toilet, is dire. The new toilet will provide privacy of use and seating to accommodate the students of different sexes and different ages, as well as, a hand washing station. It will be built in accordance with post- earthquake construction guidelines and be located closer to the school, in an area where students using the toilet will be less exposed to view from the other classrooms. Please consider a special donation to Trinity s Outreach Committee to help built the toilet. Checks should be made payable to Trinity Outreach and indicate St. Marc Toilet in the memo. 6 Now is the time to think about Education for Ministry! What is it? you ask, and why should I think about it? Education for Ministry (EfM) is a college level course designed and administered by the University of Sewanee, taught in parishes all over the country (not all Episcopal), and open to all interested in learning more about the Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and modern religious and spiritual developments. The full course if four years, but one's commitment is only for one year at a time. Please see Helen Williams, Susan Laing, or anyone you see in the EfM photographs in this summer edition for more information. 7 Search Committee by Susan Laing Over the summer we plan to complete the surveys which will help form the basis for our Parish ProXile. The next, our fourth survey, will be sent out in early June. In this one we will be addressing pastoral issues. The Xifth and Xinal survey asking about what you want in a new rector will be out in July. These are probably the most critical as they will strongly inxluence our future together. Many of you have talked with us individually about questions you have or concerns. We are now asking that you put these in writing and submit them to us so that we can address these issues when we begin to form our smaller focus groups. By writing them down we can avoid misinterpretations or omissions. As always we thank you for your participation. Your continued response to the surveys shows the strength of our community and your commitment to Trinity's future. 8 We wish Trinity s Parking Lot looked like this every Sunday morning, but since that s impossible, here are the: Guidelines for Sharing the Church Parking Lot For the Inn s Valet Parkers: 1- General Use: No overnight guest cars shall be parked on the clearly marked line of slots next to the church (including the brick walkway), and no staging of overnight guest cars into those slots shall occur in the mornings. No cars, for overnight or dinner guests, shall be valet parked in that line on Christmas Eve. 2- Saturday Night Use: No more than 9 parking slots are to be used overnight on Saturday nights (note that if a car is parked so as to occupy more than one slot, it is the number of slots that counts toward the total of 9). There is to be no staging of cars onto any part of the parking lot on Sunday before 11:30 AM (11:00 AM Memorial Day through Labor Day). 3- Other Notes: Neither exit from the parking lot shall be blocked when there is any activity in the church. The handicapped parking area is not to be used for non- handicap permitted cars. The slot nearest the Celtic cross needs a short car whenever possible. For Trinity Leadership: 1- Special Events: When special events at the church have particular parking needs, those will be reasonably communicated with the valet staff by the rector or wardens early on the the day of need, including a time when any vacant slots are available to the valets, e.g. 7:15 PM for a 7:00 PM service. The green TRIN marked cones may be used as needed (carefully not blocking any parking slots) to facilitate these arrangements and may be set aside by the valets at the time appointed. Please note that the Inn also occasionally has special events, e.g. a book signing, in preparation for which the Inn s General Manager will notify the rector or wardens of the Inn s needs in advance through the Church OfXice. 2- Other Parkers: Please note that there are people parking on the lot other than Trinitarians and the Inn s valets. In the midst of all these dedicated and shared uses, we have always welcomed community use of our parking lot. As well, some of the Inn s customers have self- parked for many years, still do, and will not know these guidelines. 3- Other Parking: Please note that the parking lot for The Parsonage which is entered off of Gay Street is available to Trinitarians and has a dedicated path to the front doors of Trinity. 4- Concerns: Issues over sharing will be addressed to the General Manager of the Inn through the Wardens of Trinity.
