and how they didn t meet. In 1979 for a total of 6 weeks Presbyterian Bill Queen and Canadian Anglican Lynn Ellen Haskett studied French in the same building in Tours, France. No doubt they passed each other walking from the same neighborhood to and from school each day. She, a junior at Northwestern, was spending her junior year abroad through the study program offered by Sweet Briar. He, having just graduated from Eckerd College, was participating in a Rotary fellowship. She spent the rest of the year at the Sorbonne in Paris, he at the university in Montpellier. For a total of 6 weeks their programs overlapped at the Institut de Touraine in Tours. They did not meet. Prior to this non- encounter, Bill was what sounds to be a character in a typical 50 s television program. Born and educated through high school in Jacksonville, FL, where his dad had an insurance business, Bill was an Eagle Scout and active in St. John s Presbyterian Church. He graduated with Honors in Philosophy & Language from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. To counterbalance Bill s traditional American upbringing, Lynn Ellen experienced her early life in war torn Algeria. She remembers bombs going off across the street from her pre- school. Channeling the spirit of Casablanca, she and her family were on the last boat out of Algiers. Her dad, an engineer with a French oil company, moved the family to Paris and then eventually to El Dorado, AR. Shunning their earlier adventures, the family later settled in Tyler, TX. So, after the international experiences of bombs in Algeria and passing as pedestrians in France, just how did these linguists of French meet? The not so obvious answer appears to be in a 7:30 AM statistics class at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, AZ where each were obtaining their MBAs. Graduating in 1984 and marrying and becoming a true statistic in 1986, the couple settled down in Atlanta s business world. Next month we will continue the path that led to the ministry. Bombs are not involved.!2

Your Monthly Bill The Big Picture for the Interim Year Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Your Vestry, Search Committee, and I met recently to look at the year ahead. We will be concentrating on four tracks of activities which will run concurrently throughout the year. (1) Regular parish activities: the calendar of services and events that would normally happen in the course of the August to July time frame. The Vestry and I, along with other lay volunteers, will primarily lead these activities. (2) Search Committee activities: the sequence of steps to complete for the hiring of a new Rector; surveys, focus groups, and preparing the parish prohile and the pastoral prohile. The Search Committee will lead these activities, with my assistance as Search Committee consultant. (3) Special intentional interim activities: a sequence of activities to help the congregation understand itself better, provide extra information to the Search Committee, and provide new experiential activities to tap into the passions and creativity of the entire congregation. A team will be put together to plan and implement these activities. More information on this track will be forthcoming next month. Also in this track is an informal, year- long audit and tune- up of parish worship, organization, administration, procedures, and other areas as needs are identihied by the Vestry and me. (4) Identihication of longer- term issues: a to- do list of activities, capital improvements, or other changes that will be compiled by the Vestry and me and passed on to the new Rector, rather than being undertaken during the interim year. Your Vestry, Search Committee, and I all hope and pray that this approach will make this interim year into a special window of opportunity for the continued growth and success of Trinity and its important ministries. Yours in Christ,!!3

59th Annual Floral Art Sale & House Tour by Helen Williams This year the three houses for the house tour, scheduled for Oct 17-18, span the history of American architecture from 1740 to The oldest, with the original log cabin and hireplace, enclosed in additions, is Huntly Farm & Studio, owned by Ronald and Ruth Anna Stolk. This house is the scene of one of Rappahannock County s signihicant Civil War Stories, as the home where Kitty Payne, a slave, was born and raised. Freed, she left the county with her three children, but was brought back by bounty hunters, and lived in the jail in Washington with her children for 300 days before the court found in her favor and she was freed. Now it is a plain country farmhouse, with stone walls and gardens to set it off, and with rustic furniture that enhances its old oak paneling, built in china cabinet, and hloors. Many additions have made it what it is today, and the intricacies of its interior attest to a long past. Meals for the haymakers of old were laid out on the old porch, barn wood made the cabinets and shelving of the kitchen, narrow stairs lead to a complicated upstairs, where Ruth Anna s studio provides space and light that encouraged many of her paintings that brighten up the whole house. And even today, it is a part time home for artists and dissertations writers, friends of the Stolks, who use the house as an oasis of tranquility as they work and study is the date for the second house on the tour, Little Eldon, in Woodville, not far from St Paul s cemetery. It is a lovely brick manor house, spacious and serene, once the site of elegant parties and coming out dances, and other times named The Spooky House by little boys, when it was empty for many years, and they dared each other to go up on the porch and peer in the windows. Now it is restored to a timeless elegance by the Lane family heirs, as well as its long time renters, Scott and Mary Sherman Willis. Original beautiful wood hloors, hireplace surrounds, staircases and bannisters are enhanced by the Willis s family antiques and art and artifacts they have collected from around the world. Our hinal house, just hinished in 2013, took a sort of modern, small house in the deep woods, with hostas by the front door to a Southern California style house, with open plan, generous dimensions, and something for every member of the four generation family, set in beautiful gardens punctuated with sculptures of stone, iron and steel. A breathtaking dining room table and chairs made by Peter Kramer, striking art on all the walls, and views of the mountains, pastures and outdoor pool, from the many windows provide a visual feast for the eyes. In this house too, its owner s travels around the world are our gain in every way.!4

Evensong by Kay Wilson At the conclusion of the House Tour and Floral Art Sale on Sunday October 18, the community is invited to a service of Evensong at 5:00pm, which will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Internationally acclaimed organist, Mr. Ronald Stolk, will lead the music and play the organ, beginning with a substantial organ prelude which will lead into Evensong. A small choir of young professional singers will lead the singing and also sing an anthem. Mr. Stolk, a Rappahannock resident, hails from the Netherlands, studied in The Hague and Paris, and is a laureate of several competitions in Europe and the United States. He is director of music at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington,DC, and teaches organ at the Catholic University of America. We also are blessed in that the Reverend William Queen, our Trinity's interim Rector, besides having enjoyed being a chorister himself, has celebrated innumerable Evensong services, and is from a musical family. Evensong has been said to refresh the soul and inform the mind. The tradition of daily prayer at set hours goes back to the earliest Christians who followed Jewish tradition. Evening Prayer is known among Anglicans, and therefore by Episcopalians, as the Daily Ofhice. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry Vlll, Edward Vl, and Mary, was mostly responsible for Morning and Evening Prayer, and an anthem for Evensong is found in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, which Cranmer authored. Evening Prayer features a hymn, a selection from the Psalms, a Scripture reading, the Magnihicat, prayers, and an anthem. Please invite your friends and neighbors to join us for this beautiful celebration.!5

Guidelines Going Forward for Trinity: by Mary Thorpe Director of Transition Ministry, Diocese of Virginia You might be wondering what it means when your rector retires, particularly since he and his wife will continue to live in the area. This raises some questions. Does it mean that he becomes invisible? Is he, in the Old English tradition, "dead to you," meaning that he no longer ceases to exist and you refuse to interact with him? Is he still a priest? Is he still YOUR priest? Is it uncomfortable to deal with a change in roles? The answers are no, no, yes, no, and sort of. Jenks was ordained, as the Letter to the Hebrews says, "a priest forever, according to the Order of Melchizedek." Once a priest, always a priest, even after retirement. That said, Jenks will no longer be YOUR priest, as much as you love him. All priests serve and then move on, and another priest comes to serve as pastor. Priests are all of us itinerants in this work, even if our sojourns are sometimes 42 years long. This means that Jenks cannot come back to preside at services. No weddings, no memorial services, no baptisms. It seems harsh, but it is part of the letting go of your retiring rector so that you can welcome the next rector fully. Jenks cannot be entwined in the day- to- day work of Trinity Episcopal Church. He has served faithfully and well, and all must respect his right to lay down the burden and the joy of that work after 42 faithful years. This doesn't mean that you cannot say hi if you run into him on the street or get together for a non- pastoral cup of coffee as a friend. You just can't do it as if he is still your pastor. Since Jenks and Molly will remain in the area, you are bound to run into them. It may feel a little clumsy at hirst, but simply say hi. Don't talk about parish stuff. Ask them about their travels, their family, their new home. Slowly, it will become a new kind of being together as friends. It will take a little while, but Jenks and Molly and you will adjust, and God will bless you for your graciousness in all this.!6

The Meditation Corner Ultimately, Christian truth is about God. To know God is to know the living God, who is at work in us by his Word, on which we rehlect, and by means of the activity of the Spirit in us becomes the life of God at work in us, transforming our hearts, minds, and actions. To be engaged with God is to have our person continually affected and renewed by God s Spirit. Diogenes Allen, Theology for a Troubled Believer Thank you from Barbara Lohre: What a surprise to have Carolyn Emerick present me with a retirement card and fabulous cash gift! I wasn't expecting anything and was completely caught off guard by the purpose of her visit. I can't explain how great it feels knowing that my work was appreciated by those I served. Thank you so much! To All of You Who Helped to Clear Out the Rectory, the Parish Owes You a Big Thank You! Preston Angell Mike Brown Greg Merritt Trish Bartholomew Juliet Del Grosso Cindy Williams Harold Beebout Carolyn Emerick Spots Williams!7

The Spots & Harold Report Spots Williams & Harold Beebout will share a column in the Trinity Times with a monthly update on the progress of the Rectory and the Parish Hall. Rectory progress as of Sunday, August 16: - Joe Keyser is our general contractor. He is quite experienced and satisfying in the best sense to work with. His family has signihicant roots in Trinity. - Current demolition is hilling a second 30 yard roll off dumpster. - First dumpster was paid by an anonymous donation. No funds from Capital Campaign were involved. Basement is broom clean and dry. - HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) bid was made this week. Some choices were offered. Heating radiators will be removed and sold. As much hot water piping as can be accessed will be removed and sold. - Insulation. We are getting bids for insulating the walls (currently there is none) and the attic. - Windows cannot be replaced without the blessing of the Architectural Review Board of Washington. Much paper chasing and a hearing required. This may be a high cost item, but long term savings can be substantial. Trinity pays the utility bills at the Rectory. - Kitchen cabinet designer met with us last week and will generate a hirm price this week. Order will be made 1 Sept and delivered 3 weeks later. - Kitchen appliance vendor has given us a bid. - Framing carpenter has framed walls of new walk- in closet and bathroom on 2nd hloor. - Electrician has started his work on 2nd hloor. - Plumber will start work Monday on infrastructure. Bid for hixtures coming this week. Some will be purchased on line. - Paint. We have a bid. Still need a drywall bid. - Adam Kerr has been engaged to manage all the outside property work. Great! Tree overhanging Rectory was expertly trimmed (you would not know it if you did not look carefully) on Friday by Chris Irmen. - Except for the cost of the windows, original estimate is tracking well. Your humble servant, Spots!8

Your Generosity Makes Capital Campaign a Success Campaign brochures were designed and mailed to every Trinity member or friend. Advance commitments were solicited. The vision was Welcoming the Future, Honoring the Past. The campaign theme was Not an equal share but an equal sacricice. Prayer booklets given to every parishioner to prayerfully consider how each was called to participate. Jenks shared his testimony and commitment from the pulpit on a number of Sundays. The children and youth participated through the creation of banners and posters. Gratitude cards were completed by children and adults to share what they are most grateful for from Trinity. The Celebration Event ofhicially launched the campaign. Jenks announced over $343,000 in advance commitments, and everyone left with a pledge card to complete. The concept of First Fruit Offering an opportunity to not only make a pledge, but to give some up front- - was introduced in order to have funds available to start the projects. By April 26, Announcement Sunday, the pledges totaled $449,895! What a celebration and a testimony to the generosity of Trinity parishioners! As of June 30, the pledge tally is up to $506,595, with another $40,000 in reliable verbal pledges, for a total of $546,595! And donations in hand are already over $240,000. Prayer and generosity have created a successful campaign beyond our expectations! But is it more than we needed? Unfortunately, no. The rectory renovation, initially estimated at $90,000, will cost nearly twice that. The parish hall, originally estimated at $305,000 is likely to exceed original estimates. The Vestry will keep you informed. So it seems that prayer not only worked, but the Holy Spirit knew something about rising construction costs. Work has begun on the rectory, expected to be completed in about three months. The Vestry will be soliciting your input and hinalizing design of the parish hall renovations. This is an exciting time for Trinity. Stay tuned. John Fox Sullivan, Campaign Chair Cole Johnson, Campaign Co- chair Mary Frances Le Mat Tim Lindstrom!9

Trinity Outreach Update By Linda Brosgol and Russ Collins Outreach Forum in Parish Hall on September 13th Trinity is known for support of its neighbors in our Rappahannock community and internationally. An Outreach Forum will be held in the parish hall after each Sunday service and during coffee hours on Sunday, September 20th. This will be an opportunity for you to learn more about local and international Trinity outreach activities. Representatives from programs such as: the Benevolent Fund, Food Panty, Fire and Rescue Volunteers, Scout Programs, ECW and the Brotherhood of St. Andrew will be invited. Each ministry will be asked to prepare a small display and be available to discuss their activities. Plan to stop by the Outreach Forum: learn, grow, get involved! Haiti Update St. Marc Trade School. Valanda Decime, a woman, university graduate will become the new Principal of the Trade School this fall. She has worked as the Administrator for both the Academic and Trade Schools for the past 3 years. We expect she will continue to improve the quality of the school. Thanks to directed contributions from Trinity members, a Tailoring Class will be added to the Trade School this semester. The existing classes of Cooking, Decorative Arts, Sewing, Embroidery and Computers will continue. Goat Program. Using directed contributions from Trinity members, our partner, Voix et Actions distributed 30 goats in July to parishioners of St. Marc, Trouin. This brings the number of goats in the program to just over 100. We are helping grow the church and improve lives. Construction has started on the new outdoor toilet for the St. Marc School and Church. Next Trip to Haiti. Russ Collins will lead a Region 13 team to Trouin departing November 7th and returning November 11th. Cost will be about $1,300. If interested, contact Russ at russcoll@comcast.net.!10
