1 November 16, 2015 H O LY F A M I LY C A T H O L I C S C H O O L Newsletter Dear Parents; Pray for Paris, pray for peace. There isn t anything I could say here that could have more meaning, as the world mourns those who were lost in the horror of the terrorist attacks in Paris. The events that unfolded last Friday will stay in the hearts and minds of us all. It is hard enough as adults to come to terms with such loss, much less our children who, no doubt, have so many questions. Do we shield them from the brutal truth? If not, how do we explain the new reality of our world. while allowing them to keep their innocence? Pray everyday with your children for the victims and their families. Pray for peace. It is our responsibility to reassure them and let them know we will do everything in our power to protect them from these radicals, who themselves fear one thing; our liberty, our freedom, and everything that makes the free world great. Father John & Father Benjamin told us in this Sunday s homily about their recent visit to local Mosque. There they spoke to the spiritual leader, the Inman, who wanted to remind them that the evil of ISIS lies in the extreme of the Muslim religion. Please make sure your children realize most Muslims do not harbor these malevolent intentions. They want to worship peacefully, like we do. We share more in common with these people than we do our differences. Children can find comfort in God s hands. There is a safe place for them when they are at peace with God. Express to them, our relationship with Him is our ultimate protection. The Thanksgiving break is nearly upon us. It is a time to count our blessings and focus on the beauty around us. How lucky we are that we live in God s grace and in a country that values the sacred miracle of life above everything else. God bless all of you at this Thanksgiving and God bless the people of Paris. Sister Dorothy Sayers, M.P.F. Holy Family Catholic School Mission Holy Family Catholic School is an educational ministry of Holy Family Catholic Church serving students in early education through eighth grade. Our mission is to inspire our students, through word and example, the beautiful Gospel message of Jesus Christ; in a supportive and caring learning environment where each child is encouraged to strive for academic excellence and grow in faith, knowledge, and love. "Go forth and teach all nations... teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Matthew 28: 19,20

6 Honoring OUR veterans GUEST SPEAKER Lt. Col Patrick Sweeney THANK YOU MR. HAMM FOR ORGAINIZING SUCH A WONDERFUL EVENT!
7 A Special tribute to a long-ago soldier My family was invited to Amelia Island on November 11, 2015 for Veterans Day because the Daughters of the American Revolution were honoring one of my ancestors, John Daniel Vaughn. They placed a memorial stone in the park to remember a few of the veterans from the island. John Daniel Vaughn was born in 1763 and lived to be 97 years old. At the age of 14, John Vaughn enlisted in Massachusetts as a Private in Captain Wiley's Regiment. He gave his age as 16 in order to enter into the army. His regiment fought in the battle of Saratoga and later he fought with the main army of General George Washington in New Jersey. It is possible that he was with Washington in Valley Forge in He was discharged from the army in 1783 at the end of the war. John Vaughn later married Rhoda Effingham and he is my 6 th Great-Grandfather. He is buried in the Vaughn-Scott Cemetery, Amelia Island, Florida. By Cabot Zarn, 7A
