1 Grand Knight Notes November Hello Brother Knights, The holidays are looking us in the eye. Thanks to all of our Brother Knights who helped with our recruiting efforts on the 20th at the pancake breakfast. We also got a lot of interest in membership from our Fiesta efforts. Four new members joined 6016 on Tuesday, October 28th - Robert Reyes (Last name sound familiar??), Chris Bateman, Richard Boyle and Samuel Awiest (from Ghana). They were with 9 other brothers from St. Clare and Blessed Kateri for the rite of initiation into the Knights of Columbus. Welcome Brothers! There will be another First Degree Ceremony at Blessed Kateri the night of our next meeting November 10th. Candidates who missed October 28th can attend on November 10th. Time will be posted. Mike McSkane and the First Degree Team did another OUTSTANDING job! Jack O Shea is assembling a Second Degree Team which will be running soon. There will be a second degree ceremony in Lancaster the first part of 2010, stay tuned. There are a LOT of candidates who have been waiting for second Degree. Call me ( ) or Steve Surjaputra around the Christmas Holidays for the latest updates on the Second Degree schedules. The most important issue for the upcoming month is the Heads-Up fund raiser. Instead of selling Tootsie Rolls, Council 6016 needs alternative ideas to generate our yearly contribution. Give us some ideas to help us make a generous contribution to Heads Up this year. 4 Page 4 Reflection for the month of November Give Thanks to the Lord for He is good! The month of November is heavily focused on Thanksgiving Weekend and the ensuing rush on Christmas shopping. For the brief moment we dedicate to giving thanks for all the blessings we received throughout the year, we quickly shift gears towards the preparation for Christmas. But more on this in December. Right now let s focus on the events of November. We commemorate the feast held by the Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag people at Plymouth in Jointly, they expressed their gratitude to God for all the blessings they enjoyed. This great tradition continues today and is generally celebrated in the circle of an enlarged family gathering. It is also a day in the year when communities share the celebration with the homeless and less fortunate in our society by providing thousands of the traditional meals of turkey and stuffing has been a year of challenges for many. Our unemployment level has reached a figure that has not been experienced for decades. Families are struggling to keep a roof over their head and their utilities connected. We read of Food Pantries and Charities who run short of resources due to the increasing demand for help. Our community of Santa Clarita has experienced the same challenge. There are many families in Santa Clarita who fall into this category. Our neighbor is closer to us than we realize. Thanksgiving Day serves not only as a celebration to give thanks to God for all our blessings but is also a strong reminder of the call to love our neighbor and to share the gifts which we have been generously endowed with throughout the year. Thanksgiving is good time for all of us to look at ourselves and to focus on our activities and generosity towards those who have fallen on hard times. Thanksgiving Day is but one day out of 365 days that people need help. While it is most commendable that communities come together on that day and share their bounty, we need to think also of the remaining 364 days when the attention to the poor and less fortunate is limited to organizations and agencies who struggle to keep pace with the needs. We need to remember that our neighbor lives through all 365 days, not just on Thanksgiving! Jesus call is meant for every day of the year!

6 2nd ANNUAL LIFE CHAIN DEMONSTRATION October 4th, 2009 Page 6 Just slightly over 100 people attended the Life Chain demonstration on the intersection of Lyons and Old Orchard Village Road. The Knights of Columbus were represented with nine members. The number of attendants at the demonstration was less than in 2008 and was disappointing. One of the Knights of Columbus major focus is on supporting the dignity and respect for human life and it is important that we are more visible in our commitment to this cause. We thank the Knights who participated

8 Page 8 OCTOBER 18th WAS A TRUE MISSION SUNDAY! Mission Sunday means the annual collection for the Propagation of the Faith and our call to be Missionaries. Missionaries here and throughout the World. The Sunday is celebrated with a collection for the Church for distribution to the poor areas of our five continents. However, as our Chaplain Fr. Ekenachi has mentioned on many occasions, all our work, all our service to the Church and to our neighbor is missionary work. The many ministries at our parish offering services to the community provide that vital missionary work locally. The Knights of Columbus have been in the forefront of this missionary work in our parish for almost 50 years. Many of the Knights efforts and events are organized for the benefit of other groups serving those in need. It was fitting that the Pancake Breakfast on Mission Sunday was dedicated for the benefit of the Society of St.Vincent de Paul which has been assisting the poor and needy in the Santa Clarita Valley since The Knights have donated the proceeds from Breakfasts on previous occasions to St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent de Paul is the largest Catholic Lay Charitable Organization in the World. The Knights of Columbus are the largest Lay Catholic Fraternal Organization of the World. Overall, the Knights of Columbus are the largest in terms of numbers with St. Vincent de Paul following right behind. St. Vincent de Paul is active in 133 countries of the world. It was founded in 1833 in Paris, France by Blessed Frederic Ozanam. It has been active in the United States since 1845 and in Los Angeles, since There are over 100 Conferences in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles serving thousands of people every year. The Santa Clarita Conference served 240 people during their last fiscal year, helping families from eviction and disconnection of utility services. Their annual report will be Conference of Santa Clarita St. Vincent de Paul, Apostle to the Poor Frederic Ozanam Founder of the Society Thank you to all the missionaries of the Knights of Columbus who have dedicated their time and effort for the benefit of their neighbor! May God bless them all for their generosity and hard work! Scott, Isaac, Joe, Bill, Bob, Steve, Jim, Ray E, Jay, Don, Tony, Michael, Millan, Jack and Ray D. Thank you! The poor and needy of Santa Clarita Thank you!
