5 CERTIFICATION CORNER THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF A FAMILY HISTORY CENTER Is To Help Members Fulfill Their Divinely Appointed Responsibility To Qualify Their Ancestors For Temple Ordinances. The Most Important Resource In A Center Is The One-On-One Assistance That Staff Provide. FAMILY HISTORY CALLINGS A collection of online resources to help you fulfill your calling Training materials and helpful resources for your family history callings LDS.org has added two new items: NEW-Assisting the Ward Council NEW-Easy Steps to: Descendancy Research Training for My Calling Select your calling below: Family History Consultant Stake and Ward Leaders Each section has a "Check your learning" and after completing the training you can print a certificate and training summary. Congratulations To The Following Consultants For Completing Their Training And Getting Their Certificates. Julie Newby... Betty Spencer...Karyl Lee Rodabough Staff members at family history centers often find themselves with no patrons to help. We encourage family history consults to reach out and help via these social networking websites as well as Family- Search s own Wiki. There is a mistaken idea that we as centers, as consultants, are not supposed to interact with societies. Not true! We have different purposes but we can help one another. Take an opportunity to turn your work inside out. Become more extraverted in helping others. -5-
6 Notes From Leonard Attached are presentation and handouts from Saturday mornings FHC staff meeting. Kathy showed how to find information on your family and ancestors on FamilySearch.org. I gave a summary of "CREATING THE FHC OF TOMORROW" by Elder Dennis Brimhall from last weeks FHC's Directors Open House. A great vision of the future was presented, the Church is doing some amazing things. More details are in Elder Brimhall's BYU talk on family history focusing more on HEARTS NOT CHARTS. ery=family+history+centers+in+the+liahona DISCOVERY THROUGH STORIES - How a 17 yr. old consultant turns the heart of a Elder's Quorum President (3 min. video) The MY Family booklet was passed out. This is the booklet for the 5th Sunday combined lesson. Sunday Lesson: Family History Stories sunday-lesson?lang=eng This 35-minute lesson, intended for a combined priesthood-relief Society-youth class, demonstrates the power family stories have to turn hearts. It introduces new features of familysearch.org like the photos and stories page and a new booklet that members of all ages can use to capture the stories of their loved ones. CAPTURE AND PRESERVE YOUR FAMILY STORY The My Family: Stories That Bring Us Together booklet is an engaging way to capture and preserve your family story. This booklet provides simple steps for recording family information, including adding photos, names, dates, and precious family stories. My Family: Stories That Bring Us Together. Go to store.lds.org to purchase the booklet or download a copy here. To easily enter the information from the booklet into FamilySearch Family Tree use -6-
7 UPLOADING DOCUMENTS IN PDF FORMAT TO FAMILYSEARCH.ORG October 21, 2013 By Matt Wright UPDATES_PHOTOS-STORIES New tools now available on FamilySearch.org can help you capture family memories that can be preserved and shared for generations to come. For most families, these memories can take many forms beyond just photos and stories documents, obituaries, and audio or video files, to name a few. FamilySearch is working hard to add support for as many of these different formats as possible. A first step is a new option to upload and specify a family memory as a Document. An important part of this new designation is the ability to upload, at long last, PDF files. This new feature is now in beta on the site. Here s how it works: New option in the navigation TOOL BAR DOCUMENTS TAB The Photos and Stories navigation now contains a Documents option. Clicking this button brings you to the Add Document page. You ll notice that the Documents features are currently in a beta trial period. Once we have had a chance to test it with enough users, it will be the default experience for every user. ADD A DOCUMENT You add a document in the same way as you do a photo. When the Documents Agreement page appears, you must click the agreement box, indicating that you have read and agree to the terms of the agreement. If you do not click the agreement box you will not be able to upload a document. DOCUMENT AGREEMENT CHECK BOX After you have clicked the agreement button, you will be taken to the page that allows you to upload a document. Click Box to Enter -7-
8 CHANGE A PHOTO TO A DOCUMENT What if you have already uploaded photos of documents as JPEGs or PNGs on the site? You can easily change the designation of any previously uploaded item from photo to document and vice versa using the Options dialogue at the bottom right of the new image viewer (until the new viewer is live, you can access it by clicking the View image in BETA viewer button on any photo page). View Photo in Beta Viewer 2 Click the Options tag at the bottom of the image to expand the Options menu. From there, click the Change to document link. Change to Document SHARE A DOCUMENT Just as is the case with photos (and stories, albums, and a person s photos page), you can share your documents through social media or . VIEW DOCUMENTS PDF documents on the site are opened in an Adobe Acrobat window, so navigation within the document should be familiar. You can zoom, jump from page to page, print, or save, among other features. PDF upload, and the ability to preserve documents as documents, have been some of our most frequently requested features. Give them a try, and let us know what you think. -8-
