3 Options for 2016 This booklet features opportunities for mission and service supported by Royal Redeemer. Every year we offer a few new options along with some familiar old ones. Missions (serving beyond our congregation) are different than ministries (serving primarily within our congregation). While Royal Redeemer s Care Ministries has its own booklet of opportunities, we ve also listed some ministries that focus beyond our congregation (pages 4 and 5). A new mission this year, Friends of Jesus, serves developmentally disabled adults (page 6). Also new this year is H.A.R.P. (Helping Appalachian Rural People), working out of a base in Caldwell, Ohio (page 13). Our Alaska team is going back for the 16th time to the Native American village of Scammon Bay to teach Vacation Bible School (page 14). The Dominican Republic team is taking its 10th mission to the Lighthouse School in Los Alcarrizos, near Santo Domingo (page 15). The Philippine team is planning its second trip to the home village of Royal Redeemer member Marissa Zimmerman, in the province of Leyte (page 17). 4 Through Royal Redeemer Donate & Deliver Food, Clothes and More Serve beyond our congregation without going too far from home! Donate food for Royal Redeemer s Community Food Pantry. Watch for announcements of needed foods. Drop off items in the basket in the Gathering Room. Become a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels. 5 Through Royal Redeemer Servant Saturday Twice a year, hundreds from our Royal Redeemer family spend a Saturday morning in the community doing yard work, visiting nursing homes, helping out at shelters and more. Christmas Giving Give to children in need through: Operation Christmas Child. Pack small gifts in shoeboxes to send to children around the world. Angel Tree. Buy gifts for children whose parent is in prison. Adopt-a-Family. Families are identified through Royal Redeemer. Care n Share Every Thanksgiving, Royal Redeemer cooks and serves more than 1,000 hot turkey dinners for people in our community. It takes a huge team of volunteers: cooks, servers, packers, drivers, and setup and cleanup crews. Watch the weekly announcements for the next opportunity to help with these activities. 5

6 Through Royal Redeemer Friends of Jesus Friends of Jesus is a group of adult and youth volunteers from Royal Redeemer that come together twice a month to provide Christian fellowship to adults with developmental disabilities and the staff that cares for them. The agenda always centers around a Bible story, interactive music, craft or activity and snacks. The highlight of 2015 was the Midnight on the Midway special needs prom hosted at Royal Redeemer in May. Come to a session on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Gathering Room. Help with crafts and answer questions. Donate crafts. Lynn Ebner lmebner@att.net 6

7 Through Royal Redeemer Redeemer Creations Redeemer Creations shares warmth and God s love with others by providing hand-knit and crocheted items. Currently, we send: Baby blankets, baby sweater sets and baby booties to pregnancy centers Preemie caps to neonatal intensive care units Lap robes and afghans to nursing homes, hospice care centers and the veterans hospital Prayer shawls and lap robes to members and friends of our congregation, including recipients of Meals on Wheels Winter scarves to kids in need and Cleveland-area deployed military personnel Memory blankets to birthing centers Baptismal blankets to newly baptized infants and crocheted crosses to newly baptized children and adults at Royal Redeemer Knit or crochet items independently. You should have a basic knowledge of knitting and/or crocheting, but we can teach you the basics. We have a generous supply of yarn available. Join us from 7-9 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month in Room 136 to share what has been created and arrange for deliveries. Donate yarn or money. 8 In our community Crossroads Church Plant Crossroads mission is to be a safe place for churched and unchurched people to unpack the messiness of life and learn how to move forward in a relationship with Jesus. As the congregation intentionally reaches out into the highways and hedges of their community, God is connecting them with all kinds of people some who have never felt welcome in a church before. Homosexuals, felons, addicts and strippers are coming to know the forgiveness and freedom that come with knowing Christ as Lord and Savior. The congregation now worships weekly on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in their building at Brookpark Rd., Brook Park. Crossroads leaders are aiming for a big public celebration at Easter. Lots of lives have already been touched. Pray that Crossroads would stay outwardly focused as they train leaders to make disciples. Pray that they would continue to be in the path of people who need Christ. Join the list to stay in the loop on volunteer opportunities in Crossroads community. 9 In our community Cleveland Pregnancy Center The Cleveland Pregnancy Center educates, equips and provides services to meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of pregnant, parenting and post-abortive individuals and families. We provide clients with information about prenatal development and abortion. We assist women in carrying their baby to term by providing emotional support and practical assistance while sharing God s love and plan for their lives. 10 In our community Building Hope in the City Our mission is to restore Cleveland to God by developing and linking people, communities and churches. We offer various ministries focused on developing and supporting urban faith leaders, tutoring urban and refugee students, mentoring refugee families and transforming the lives of brothers and sisters in poverty. Amy Mitchell Mentor a refugee family. Join a team of two to three volunteers who take turns working with one family for six months, helping them learn about American culture and life in Cleveland. Tutor an urban or refugee student once a week. Afternoon and evening tutoring is offered at five locations around Cleveland. Help an immigrant or refugee learn English. Sign up to attend a Building Hope 101 session to learn about opportunities to serve. 10

11 In our community Lutheran Metropolitan Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (LMM) provides services and advocacy for people among the most in need in Northeast Ohio. LMM helps them find employment, housing, counseling and support services so they can become productive members of our community. Gary Likowski , ext Ministry Serve at 2100 Lakeside, LMM s 350-bed men s shelter in downtown Cleveland. Be a volunteer guardian or attorney for a vulnerable adult, serving as a caring advocate or surrogate decision-maker. Support people returning to the community after a period of incarceration or people placed on probation. Lutheran Chaplain Partnership This service agency provides spiritual care services, primarily in hospitals and long-term care settings. Friends of the Chaplain Partnership mostly sew, knit or crochet items that chaplains give to patients, families and hospital staff. Howard Chavalia

12 In our community Youth Mission Opportunities Each year as we begin planning our mission trips, parents say, There are so many needs right here in Cleveland. Why not serve here? You ve heard of a STAY-CATION? We re once again offering our youth a STAY- MISSION. We ll be serving here in Cleveland, partnering with local ministries to provide students with lifelong opportunities to serve. This year we will be partnering with The City Mission and Building Hope in the City, working with our own Caring Cafe care ministry, and holding a community carnival. In addition to learning about some important local ministries, we ll also be learning about our city through daily adventures to places like Melt, the West Side Market area, Tower City and more. 13 Across the United States H.A.R.P. & Disaster Response Royal Redeemer works with Helping Appalachian Rural People (H.A.R.P. ) out of its storage and bunk bed building in Caldwell, Ohio, and its headquarters at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Columbia Station. H.A.R.P. servant events assist with home repairs and yard work for low-income families, the elderly and the disabled. We do about four servant events in Caldwell each year. Royal Redeemer also works with Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio to respond to disasters. There are about three floods in Ohio each year. 14 Across the United States Vacation Bible School in Alaska July 2016 This will be the 16th year that Royal Redeemer partners with Alaska Mission for Christ to send a team to Scammon Bay, Alaska. The team will lead Vacation Bible School for grades K-6 during the day, including opening worship, Bible lesson, gym time and craft time. In the evenings, they will lead a young adult Bible study. The trip also involves fellowship with the village s adults and helping organize a prayer service for the village. Join the team! Pray for the team s health, safety and success. 15 Around the world Construction in Dominican Republic February 2017 Following its February 2016 trip, the Dominican Republic Mission Team will have done 10 missions to serve the Lord and the Dominican people in Los Alcarrizos, a poor community northwest of Santo Domingo. Teams of 15 to 30 people have built homes, a vocational school classroom and a kitchen facility at the Lighthouse School, where they lodge in the guest house they also helped build. The teams ministry includes teaching Vacation Bible School, English as a second language (ESL) and a women s Bible study. No prior construction experience is necessary. This is an ideal short-term mission trip for families. Trip expenses range from $1,600 to $1,800 per person. Pray about joining the 2017 team! 16 Around the world Missions in Haiti Royal Redeemer has a long-standing relationship with congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti, especially in the cities of Cap-Haitien, Jacmel, Les Cayes and Port-au-Prince. Last year, Royal Redeemer was the major contributor towards the construction of a new sanctuary and wood shop for Premiere Lutheran Church in Cap-Haitien. In addition, each year we provide an opportunity to sponsor individually named students at Premiere Lutheran s school for $250. Last year, Lutherans in Ohio sponsored 175 students. 17 Around the world Water Filters and Eyeglasses to the Philippines March 2017 The family of Royal Redeemer member Marissa Zimmerman asked for help obtaining clean water for their village in the Philippines. Royal Redeemer mission teams had installed water filters in Haiti and done several eyeglass missions, so doing both in the Philippines was a natural fit. A team of seven traveled to the Philippines in March They coordinated the trip with the president of the Lutheran Church of the Philippines, who led a worship service during the trip. He brought an evangelist who is continuing the work in those villages. The team plans to return in March Pray about joining the team in March Attend the Philippine-style pig roast fundraiser at Royal Redeemer on May 14, Financially support the ongoing work of the evangelist from the Lutheran Church of the Philippines. 18 Around the world Lutheran Women s Missionary League This group seeks to develop and maintain a greater missions consciousness among women through education, inspiration and service. A major emphasis is the support of mission and ministry throughout the world through mite box offerings, which have funded tens of millions of dollars in mission grants since Each year, our grants help 20 different missions in the Ohio District, United States and around the world. Mission Teams Audacious Garage Sale August 2016 will be the 10th year that an army of dedicated volunteers will unite to transform the Activity Center into a mammoth garage sale. The sale not only raises financial support for missions, it also builds relationships between mission team members, our church family and our community. It s a great way to reduce/reuse/recycle, and it provides an economical way to purchase items for home, business or school. Following the sale, leftover items are donated to area nonprofits. Think Mission Teams Garage Sale when it s time to do spring cleaning! Donate your good items during collection week. Volunteer to help plan, sort, price and work at the sale. 18
