One of the gifts for which I am thankful in our community here at Resurrection is that we often see and meet and welcome new people into our midst. On Sunday, April 9th, we welcomed new members to our congregation. Bob Goldstein (pictured on the left) is a retired pastor (he's filled in here at RLC) and was born in Australia. He has two grown daughters in the Chicagoland area. Adam, Kim, Bennett, and Clayton Collins (center) live in the neighborhood and are (clearly by their picture) huge Cubs fans. Clayton was baptized here earlier this year, and Bennett looks forward to attending preschool here this fall. Adam works in the mayor's office and enjoys sailing. Kim works for Illinois Action for Children. Sara Calkins (pictured on the right) recently received her Master's degree in Library and Information Science and currently works at Thresholds. She enjoys writing, singing, and time with family back in Jackson, Michigan. Andrea Munger (picture coming) and her fiancé Derek both work as internal auditors. She enjoys baking, crafts, swimming, and travelling. Welcome to you all!...and A PICTORIAL DIRECTORY "Isn't it time for a new directory of all of us?" Phil Thompson asked at our last Council meeting. This summer, we'll be asking all of you to submit a picture (formal or fun like the ones above) for inclusion in a new directory. Look for more information next month as to how and when to submit your photo. In the meantime, there are plenty of great things happening at RLC this month! See you on Sunday, Pastor Kelly SERVING WITH THE NIGHT MINISTRY Join us as we gather items, prepare a meal, and serve the meal with the Youth Outreach Van! You can sign-up in the hallway behind the pulpit or online. The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization that works to provide housing, health care and human connection to members of our community struggling with poverty or homelessness. With an open heart and an open mind, they accept people as they are and work to address their immediate physical, emotional and social needs while affirming their sense of humanity. RLC Mission Statement Resurrection Lutheran Church invites and welcomes all people to hear God's word, share our faith, and celebrate the sacraments. Through music, liturgy, and fellowship, we embrace diversity, nurture children, advocate justice, and praise God. This is our response to the Gospel.

2 ADULT FORUM ON MAY 21ST As a continuation of the series led by Sherman Hicks this Spring, we welcome Jennifer Viets on May 21st at 9:45 a.m. Jennifer will share information about her work here in Chicago as a prison and police Abolitionist and Restorative Justice practitioner. She will also outline the work of other abolitionist organizations she is connected with including CLAW(the Chicago League of Abolitionist Whites) BYP100(Black Youth Project 100), Assata's Daughters, R3 Coalition(Resist, Rebuild, Reimagine) Love and Protect, the People's Response Team and the Reunification Ride. She will also include direct and immediate ways to be involved. If time allows she can also present a small portion of the 3 part series she co-facilitates at the Chicago Freedom School on White Folks and Racial Justice. MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND GRANT RECIPIENT VISIT Preschool Director Debbie Mytych attended a luncheon for recipients of the grants awarded by Cubs Charities. Thanks Cubs! Join us as we welcome guests from organizations that received Mission Endowment Fund Grants this year. CONFIRMATION SUNDAY ON MAY 21ST, 10:45 A.M. We celebrate with Fay-Ling Laures and Will DeCaigny as they affirm their faith during the 10:45 a.m. worship service. They'll share pieces of their Confirmation Reflection and we'll all eat cake after worship. This month, we welcome Leslie Hunter, Chaplain for Holy Family Ministries on Sunday, May 28th. Leslie visted us last year, and we're thrilled to have him back among us to bring the sermon!

April 2, 2017 For Social Workers Compassionate God, we lift up all who work as social workers. Strengthen and guide them as they protect vulnerable children and support families in need of assistance. Give them wisdom and caring hearts as they help others solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. April 9, 2017 For Lawyers Dear God, we lift up to you today lawyers who work in our country, state and community. We ask your wisdom for those who advocate for the very young, the very old, those wrongly accused, immigrants and others whose voices are sometimes hard to hear. Give these advocates the courage to labor for right within the confines of our legal system. April 16, 2017 For Peacemakers Loving God, give us the wisdom to be peacemakers; to control our anger (Romans 12:19), to pay back evil with good (Romans 12:17, 21), and to stop slander (Colossians 3).May we find the strength to work for local and global peace which allows God to work through us. April 23, 2017 For Creation / Earth Day "Lord God, sovereign of the universe, in your majesty you created and sustain all of creation. Bless all of your creation as a sign of your wondrous love. Help us to use our technological inventiveness to undo the damage we have done to your creation. Help us to end the suffering of the poor and bring healing to all of your creation. Help us to seek the way of your new creation, the way of justice and care, mercy and peace. Grant us the grace to respect and care for your creation. April 30, 2017 For Retired People Dear Lord, Today we pray for people who are retired or who are nearing retirement. We express grateful thanks for the good health and strength which enabled them to reach this point in their lives. Guide them to continue to be instrumental in your work. Help in time of trouble and be a constant guide to direct their every step. Inspire them to seize each opportunity that arises and to explore the skills and gifts that you have given them. Offer them many more years in your service so their retirement may be an opportunity to work with spirit and truth to glorify your name. 4 LUTHER HYMN OF THE MONTH: CHRIST JESUS LAY IN DEATH S STRONG BANDS (ELW #370) This Easter Hymn is one of the most famous of Luther s hymns. Like many of his hymns, it is less known in this country, often pushed to the background by the more familiar English Easter hymns. However, the hymn can be found in the hymnals of many American denominations. The text was written in 1524, and its image rich message illustrates Luther s understanding of the atonement as a mighty duel between life and death Good Friday and Easter. Here Luther again is teaching the common Christian, through and song, the foundational doctrines of the Church. The tune is always linked to this text, and was probably written with the help of Johann Walter, a close musician associate of Luther. The tune is derived from an earlier Latin chant for Easter, Victimae Paschali, which is also found in ELW (#371), and is also the source for another popular German song, Christ ist erstanden (ELW # 372). The resulting adaptation of the tune creates a strong, straightforward and uplifting vehicle for Luther s words. Many composers have used this hymn as a basis for new compositions. When used, the entrance of the theme always signals a feeling of hope and victory. Ecumenical Taizé Service Thursday, June 1st 7 St. Andrew s Roman Catholic Parish, 3546 N. Paulina. 9 Our communities in the Americas whether immigrant or campesino or indigenous or Afro- descendant are pushed off their land and sometimes out of their countries by large economic forces pursuing profits. For these forces, there are no borders. Many who are displaced are finding ways to connect with others in the Americas to resist deportation and dislocation. All seek to create safer spaces in which to live in the Americas. Come for social time with CRLN members and staff and hear from Claudia Lucero, Cinthya Rodriguez and Sharon Hunter-Smith about how CRLN is addressing these issues and ways to get involved.
