1 June 2018 The Messenger A Monthly Newsletter from Resurrection Lutheran Church For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. -Ecclesiastes 3:1 Dear Ones, As summer slows down in some ways it seems to pick up in others. Weekend trips and vacations, sleeping in after a wedding or Saturday event often finds familiar faces far away (and sometimes new faces here) for Sunday morning worship. If you are a member or active visitor here at RLC, I encourage you to join us for weekly worship. We best welcome new people when there are more of us in the pews and present for fellowship. Remember, we're on our summer worship schedule of 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. If you're travelling, I encourage you to worship wherever you are and bring back helpful reflections of how others worship and welcome (along with a bulletin too!) so that we might learn and grow here at RLC! This summer, we'll consider the above theme in some way each Sunday morning. We'll share resources for praying/pleading that God would bring us peace but also for our own advocating or working toward peace in the world, in our city, and in our hearts. In June, we'll have "Get to Know RLC" sessions for new members and others as well as three weeks of backyard bible study on Thursday evenings to look at where peace is proclaimed in scripture. We'll also continue to collect items for Night Ministry Hygiene Kits, and assemble with others from the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches to march in the Pride Parade. Whether you're near or far, I invite you to pray, "God, bring us peace," and then to live in ways that can bring peace near and far. 2 GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT RLC Whether you're a new visitor to our community or a long-time member, you are invited to join us for a "Get to Know More About RLC" session! This could also be called a new members class, but all are welcomed and invited to learn a little more about the history, theology, and current ministries that make our RLC community who we are as a congregation! If you plan to join us on Sunday, June 11 a.m. in Fellowship Hall or Monday, June 7 p.m. in the Parish House, please Pastor Kelly. New Members will be received into membership on Sunday, June 24th. SUMMER COFFEE HOUR HOSTS Do you like to bake? Or maybe going through the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru is more your style? Whatever your style or skill, You could host a coffee hour! Either between services or after the 10 a.m. service, we are in need of Coffee Hour Hosts. What does this entail? You make coffee, bring snacks (and cold drinks if you'd like), and tidy up after. Please consider hosting this summer as we welcome guests and familiar faces for fellowship. FROM YOUR STEWARDSHIP TEAM As summer gets underway, vacations and other fun events sometimes keep us from Sunday services at RLC. While you are away, our congregation still has financial commitments to meet. You may be asking yourself, Is there an easy way to continue timely contributions this summer, even if I miss weekly worship? Yes! You can easily set up automatic payments of any schedule and amount using the Simply Giving program. Alternately, you might set up scheduled electronic payments through your financial institution. If you need more information about either of these options please contact the church office at office@rlclakeview.com or call (773) Thank you for supporting the summer ministries of Resurrection Lutheran Church! HYGIENE KIT COLLECTION We receive donations of travel items throughout the year that will eventually make their way to The Night Ministry. As the closet fills, we look to schedule an assembly date to put together kits. Planning ahead, we'll meet on Sunday, July 15th at 11am to assemble kits (our goal is 50 complete kits). In the meantime, we could use the following travel-sized items: 45 individually wrapped toothbrushes or toothbrush/toothpaste packs 45 mouthwashes 50 lip balms 30 combs/brushes 50 disposable razors 50 travel shaving creams 30 travel wipes/toilettes 5 deoderants We have enough of all the other items to reach our goal of 50 (shampoo, conditioner, washcloth, lotion, and soap), but will continue collecting them as well.

3 Peace in Scripture Backyard Bible Study Thursdays, June 14, 21, :30pm Bring your own bible and beverage. Snacks provided. If raining, we'll meet in the parish house. PRIDE 2018 Brunch 6/16/18 Please join us for the second year at our Pride brunch and reception, "Sharing Light, Sharing Faith in Divided Times!" on Saturday 6/16 from 10 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. This year we are hosted by Irving Park United Methodist Church, 3801 N Keeler, Chicago, IL Last year s event provided an opportunity for story sharing and fellowship, and we again hope you will share your and your churches stories of welcoming justice and needs for support. RSVP by June 14 to brent@chicagowelcomingchurches.org or bhopemsw@aol.com. Any goodwill donation from noncoalition members will be accepted gratefully at the door. Pride Parade Sunday 6/24/18 Members and friends of RLC have an opportunity to walk in the Parade with the other congregations of CCWC. Plan to worship with us at 10 a.m. that Sunday then head to the parade line-up. JUNE SOCIAL MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT THE CHICAGO COALITION OF WELCOMING CHURCHES The Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches (CCWC) s a collaboration of more than 70 churches and other ministries in the Chicago metropolitan area which welcome and affirm people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The organization has two goals: To spread the message of our members' LGBTQ-inclusion across the Chicago metropolitan area, mindful that a positive message about sexual and family diversity is a gift to all people. To connect the leaders, members, and guests of our partner churches for fellowship and education, enabling support and resource-sharing for the practices of faithful welcome. This is the organization that helps register and organize our marching in the Pride Parade. Here at RLC, we store all the sings used in the parade in exchange for our annual dues (and because we had the space!). To find our more, you can visit the CCWC website.

4 THANKSGIVINGS A HUGE thank you goes out for all the folks who came and participated in our Spring Work Day on May 19th! Phil Thompson, for his leadership and coordination of the whole day. Beth Fulkerson, for her leadership with the landscaping and outside work. And for all these folks who painted, cleaned, organized, and encouraged: Brittany and Andrew Dulmage, Eloise Thompson, Laura Fosler, Bill and Linda Chin, Grady, Reid, and Declan Prickett, Rob, Stephanie, and Christian Youngman, Rick Kline, Jackie Grinvalds, Anthony Didato, and anyone else who Pastor Kelly didn't write down on her list! FROM CHURCH COUNCIL Pastor Kelly's coordination of funeral services, Maurice for painting sacristy floor (and putting the finishing touches on the basement), Ryan for finding a new insurance quote, Jill for putting together planter in front of Parish House, the Confirmation families for luncheon, Preschool families at Mia Francesca, and Tony and Tina for using our space. (They finished their performances in May). OUR FIRST BICYCLE BLESSING On a cloudy Saturday morning, we tried our first Bicycle Blessing on the corner of Seminary Avenue and School Street. We had one family from the neighborhood attend with their young daughter riding her bike with training wheels (she had asked all week when it would be time for the blessing) and our own Jackie Grinvalds. With such a small gathering, it means we have plenty of room to grow this for next year! Hope you'll plan to join us next Spring!

5 These prayers are written or selected by members of our Stewardship Team for use in Sunday worship and for personal prayer in the month after used in worship. May 6 Loving God, You are the giver of all we possess, the source of all of our blessing. We thank and praise you. Thank you for the gift of our children. As Cady, Christian, Gregor and Max affirm their Baptism in the Rite of Confirmation we pray for the Holy Spirit to help them grow in faith, hope, and love so that they may know peace, truth, and goodness. May 13 We pray for mothers we love and mothers we struggle to love. For adoptive mothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers. For those who long to be mothers. For those who grieve the deaths of their mothers. For everyone who has mothered us in the faith. Give rest, healing, wisdom, and strength, mothering God. (adapted from Sundays and Seasons) May 20 Gracious God, We give thanks for those who have taught Sunday school, confirmation, and adult education classes this past year. With wisdom, insight and patience, these dedicated people prepared and presented lessons that encouraged us to ask questions, ponder and grow. We are grateful for the songs, snacks, art, crafts and books that enhanced our experience. Bless these teachers with the knowledge that their commitment is valued and that they enrich all of us. May 27 Heavenly Father, tomorrow we remember those who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. May we honor them with the way we live and exercise our liberty. For you are our example by the sacrifice of your beloved son, Jesus, our lord. FROM LAURA SMALLEY SUNDAY MORNING CANTOR Thank you for another wonderful year, for welcoming me every week, for supporting music, for all the treats and (many) cups of coffee, for caring conversation and laughter, for nurturing my faith and showing me Christ-like love both here and in the world. FROM OUR PRESCHOOL The preschool was so very excited to visit the fire station on Halsted near Diversey in May! Many parents joined us as well as the children learned about what the firefighters do when they get a call. They even showed the children what they have to wear to stay safe! The children also got to go inside a truck and took turns using a hand water pump! Hip hop hooray for firefighters! And great job Resurrection Preschool children!
