Palm Sunday April 8:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m. We wave our palm branches to mark the beginning of this holy week in procession around the building and hear the whole story of Jesus journey to the cross. Maundy Thursday April We gather at Jesus table and kneel to wash each other s feet. The altar is stripped as we remember how Jesus walked from supper to his humiliation and death. *No parking available at Hawthorne School, hoping to have permits available. Please carpool or take public transportation. Good Friday April We gather around the cross and pray for the whole world, mindful that it is the whole world that God loves and dies to save, turning even the darkest Friday into the one called Good. *Parking may be available at Hawthorne School, we're hoping to hear back from them soon! Vigil of Easter Saturday, April We light a new fire, listen to stories of God s presence throughout our faith history, gather at the baptismal font, and celebrate Jesus Resurrection with Holy Communion and a latenight potluck (please bring a dish to share). *Parking may be available at Hawthorne School, we're hoping to hear back from them soon! The Resurrection of Our Lord Sunday, April 8:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m. Easter Egg 9:45 a.m. We gather for festival worship with Holy Communion. Whether you re the kind of person to break out a new bonnet and gloves or just want to put on jeans, know that you are welcome to worship the Risen Lord with us on Easter and every Sunday! RLC Mission Statement Resurrection Lutheran Church invites and welcomes all people to hear God's word, share our faith, and celebrate the sacraments. 2 LOVE LIVES AGAIN! Now the green blade rises from the buried grain, wheat that in the dark earth many days has lain; love lives again, that with the dead has been; love is come again like wheat arising green. The first stanza of Now the Green Blade Rises by John Macleod Campbell Crum ( ) is based on John 12:2324 when Jesus tells the disciples, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." During this month of April, we watch the transition from cold, dreary winter to sunny, warm spring and are reminded of how God brings forth new life time and time again, especially through Jesus' Resurrection that we'll celebrate together on Easter Sunday! SUNDAY MORNING PARKING We have renewed our contract with Hawthorne Scholastic Academy for Sunday parking. We pay the school $125/week for the use of 10 parking spaces on Sundays from 7am3pm. A few exceptions exist to space and time when Cubs games coincide with our festival dates and times: April 14 Palm Sunday (20 spaces) 7am1pm April 21 Easter Sunday (25 spaces) 7am12:30pm May 26 Confirmation Sunday (25 spaces) 7am12:30pm If you arrive early and can grab a street spot (especially on these festival days), it will help us be able to offer as much parking as possible. EVENING PARKING The city has stopped the program where nonprofit organizations can contain parking permits through the Alderman's Office and through the City Clerk which means that we are no longer be able to purchase permits. If you live in the 383 and would consider donating a sheet for evening meetings and Holy Week worship, we would be super appreciative! 3 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR STEWARDSHIP TEAM Biblical Stewardship Characteristics The word intentional comes to mind when one thinks about our Stewardship Team s mission statement: To help God s people grow in their relationship with Jesus through the use of the time, talents and finances God has entrusted to them. Most of us, if not all of us, are very intentional when there is something we want to accomplish. We may give serious thought, consideration, and prayer to such an endeavor. We may go as far as setting goals and developing a plan to accomplish such goals. When it comes to sharing with the church your gifts of time, talent and finances are you intentional? There is a congregation in India when at the time of the offering some people come forward with money while others come forth with rice and other food. The families who offer rice don t have much money. When they prepare food for their families they put a small amount of rice aside each day. As the week progresses they add to the rice that has been put aside and on Sunday they present their offering of rice. There is a food sale at the church on Monday and the money from the sale supports the congregation s ministry. This type of giving is intentional. The families have a plan of putting aside rice each day and they carry out that plan by bringing their offering of rice to church on Sunday. To be intentional in sharing your time, talent and finances means to develop a plan and carry it out. If you don t have such a plan, your Stewardship Team strongly encourages you to develop a plan and live it out. YOUNG WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY All women in their 20's and 30's are invited to join the Young Women's Bible Study as they meet monthly for fellowship and faithful reflection and study. 4 Grant Recipient Visits The RLC Mission Endowment Fund was set up with the hopes of supporting the longterm work and ministry here at RLC and by other community organizations and congregational ministries across the Chicagoland area and beyond. During Lent and Easter, we will hear from grant recipients during worship and/or between services during our adult education time. Please join us as we learn more or continue to be in relationship with these people and wonderful organizations. March 31 Betsy Nore Chicago Books for Women in Prison April 7 Paula Mattison Northside Housing and Supportive Services April 14 Concordia Place Teens will be selling their soaps and other products. These prayers are written or selected by members of our Stewardship Team for use in Sunday worship and for personal prayer in the month after they have been prayed in worship. March 3 Gracious God, We give thanks for the Good News Garage ministry formed and run by Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Plaines. This program provides refurbished and safe vehicles to those who are in great need of a vehicle but cannot afford one. Be present with and sustain the mechanics, painters, cleaners, and other volunteers who work on the donated cars. Reassure them that the hours they give make a real and tangible impact on people s lives. Inspire your people to provide paint, parts and resources necessary to pay for title transfers, taxes and license plates. Keep us mindful that a reliable and reasonable means of transportation is a necessity in our society. March 10 Healing God, today we thank you for Bonaventure House which has been a part of the Lakeview community since We give thanks for medical and mental health professionals, social workers and other staff members who assist clients living with HIV/AIDS. The three basics needs proper nutrition, consistent healthcare, and stable housing are addressed for each Bonaventure House resident. Once the basics have been addressed, the staff helps residents expand their focus beyond mere survival toward sustaining a healthy lifestyle. We ask your continued guidance and blessings on the staff and clients of Bonaventure House. March 17 Today we pray for the dedicated staff and volunteers at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. Guide these stewards who provide critical health, housing and educational services for those in need. We ask for your blessing on the Inmates Helping Inmates program, which offers literacy training to those who are incarcerated. Your grace is revealed when inmates learn to read and then help to teach others. We are grateful for these achievements and the improved sense of accomplishment for these individuals. Thank you for the rich blessings that allow Resurrection s Mission Endowment fund to support this meaningful ministry. March 24 Surround the youth, therapists, and staff at Lawrence Hall who participate in and facilitate their Expressive Therapies programs. As they use music and art to access and express emotions, help them grow in managing behaviors, reducing anxiety, and increasing selfesteem. March 31 Lord, help us to prepare the way on our Lenten journey leading to Christ s passion. The season of Lent fulfills God s desire for our salvation. Open our hearts to the Savior who has laid down his life to rescue us from sin and despair. Then use us to draw others to your son, Jesus. ~from Lutheran Lenten Devotions
