1 Newsletter of the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church Main & North Streets, Marcellus, NY June SEEKING WISDOM BIBLE STUDY A Gathering for EVERYONE SEEKING to DEEPEN THEIR RELA- TIONSHIP WITH GOD And DISCOVER MORE About Being a JESUS FOLLOWER 2018 June 9, :00-11:30 AM - Fireside Room Led by Dr. Ginny Smith Please join us Saturday, June 9, 2018, for another enthusiastic and enlightening discussion of God s Word and how it applies to and can be lived out in our lives today. Brian D. McLaren's book entitled We Make the Road by Walking is an excellent guide in helping us dig deeper into what can often be unfamiliar territory. On June 9, we will be exploring chapter 11, From Ugliness, A Beauty Emerges. The Scripture passages we ll be reading are Deuteronomy 7:1-11, Psalms 137:1-9 and 149:1-9, and Matthew 15: Here is a teaser that will be a part of our discussion. We can t ignore the brutality found in many scripture passages.... Our ancestors, led by Moses and Joshua, believed God sent them into the world in conquest, to show no mercy to their enemies, to defeat and kill them. But now, following Christ, we hear God giving us a higher mission. Now we believe God sends us into the world in compassion, to show mercy, to heal, to feed, - to nurture and protect life rather than take it. Our next meeting will be on September 8, when we will be exploring Stories That Shape Us and The Great Conversation. Future dates include: October 13, November 10, and December 8; 2019 January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, and June 8. Hope to see you on June 8. PEOPLE OF ALL AGES ARE EN- COURAGED TO COME. Morning worship service begins at 9:30 am starting Memorial Day weekend (May 27th) through Labor Day weekend (September 3rd) Summer Services Reminders: This summer we worship with our Methodist sisters and brothers. July services are in the Methodist sanctuary, while in August we will be in the Presbyterian sanctuary. 2 Note from Ginny Smith FALLING UPWARD A SPIRITUALITY FOR THE TWO HALVES OF LIFE A note from Ginny Smith I am excited at the prospect of meeting with people who are interested in growing spiritually and deepening their relationship with God. To guide us on our journey and in our conversations, we will be reading Richard Rohr s book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life. It is available on Amazon. In my life and ministry I have discovered, with the help of people like Richard Rohr, that in the first half of life, we are so preoccupied with establishing our identity climbing, achieving, performing, being who and what others want us to be that we lose the person God created us to be in the first place. Then we come to that point in our lives when we begin to realize that these concerns are not serving us as well as we had been led to believe they would, particularly when we are confronted by challenges, mistakes, loss of control, broader horizons, and necessary suffering. We re caught off guard and shocked out of our comfort zones. Unfortunately, we get stuck and don t know how to deal with what is happening in our lives, let alone know how and where God is present in all that is going on. If this rings true for you, or if you re intrigued by what falling upward is all about, I would love to hear from you. Perhaps you know someone who is not a member of MFPC who might want to be a part of the conversation. Check with them and see. And then me at ginnys3444@twcny.rr.com, see me at church, or call me and let me know. My phone number is in the directory. Once I know who wants to join me and others who have expressed an interest, we ll be able to set up a meeting time. June 2018 Page 2

3 Christian Education Hello, Summer! The Sunday School year has wrapped up once again. Hard to believe another summer is almost upon us. I feel like just yesterday we were at Navarino Orchards picking apples for our pie sale last fall! Looking ahead to the next couple of months, there will not be regular youth group meetings or Sunday school classes until September. The nursery room, however, will be open and available to any and all children who would like to head downstairs at any point during the service. Volunteers are scheduled through Graduation Sunday. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who help make our Christian Education program successful. Nursery volunteers included Sue Bird, Deb Swankey, Lisa Gates, Charlie Smith, Deb Quick and Erin Stasik. Elementary teachers included Sandy Manciocchi, Erin Stasik and Taryn Jirousek. Brian Ray co-led the youth group with me once again this year. Ginny Smith continues to offer her adult CE gatherings throughout the year, for which we are all especially grateful. Thank you all for the time and effort you put into keeping our little church school program running smoothly. We may be small, but we have some of the best kids around and have a great time growing in faith together. If you would like to continue as a CE volunteer in any capacity, please let me know over the summer. If you haven t been involved in recent years and would like to be, you can let me know that, too. We are always eager for new faces and ideas on our committee or in the classrooms. ~With Sincere Thanks, Allison Ray Bowling Fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Thank you all so much for supporting our independent bowling effort to raise money for Habitat for Humanity! Since we were not able to attend the organization s fundraiser in February, we opted to combine a year-end party and bowl-a-thon to do our part to support them. After service on Children s Sunday, we all headed over to Cedar House Lanes where we had a great spread of food and bowled a couple of games at their lanes. As always, it was a lot of fun to see some impressive bowling form and hear the good-hearted trash talking that goes on. More importantly, we raised $518 for Syracuse Habitat for Humanity! Thank you for your generosity! Here are some pictures from the afternoon. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Congratulations to Justin Costa on his graduation from Marcellus High School! He will be heading off to Clarkson University this fall. Youth group will not be the same without you, Justin, but we will be cheering you on from MFPC and we hope you ll come back and spend time with us when you re home from school!! June 2018 Page 3
