TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! In Scripture, we read that St. Paul asked the Gentile Churches to take up a collection to support the Church in Jerusalem. Now we are asked to reach out and support the young churches throughout our world. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve in those on the margins and in most need. Go out to the whole world through your gift in today s collection!
2 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 A PARISH PICNIC THANK YOU The weather cooperated and the food and fun were plentiful for all who participated. The success of the picnic, however, was the result of the combined efforts of a great many volunteers. A parish thank you goes first to the picnic committee co-chairs, Bob Curtner and Gerry Dupree. They worked to sign up participants, invite volunteers, arrange the tent rental, the DJ, the clowns, the sketch artist, the basketball, batting, cornhole and golf games, the bingo, and the snow cone, cotton candy, cake walk and popcorn extras. Particular thanks: to Bob and Theresa Curtner and their team of volunteers for efficiently preparing and feeding all who attended; to: our maintenance staff, Mike McCall, Kevin, Jerry and Denny who kept things running and guided both the morning set up and evening tear down/clean up with manpower help from members of the parish Knights of Columbus and Boy Scouts; to: Tony Romano who organized and called bingo, Michelle Baldygo who led the Cake Walk team with Caroline Barhorst, Tammie Retzloff, Madeleine Sanders, and the 35 bakers of delicious homemade cakes; to: Nancy LeCain who organized three teams of three parish nurses to staff a first aid station (no injuries or illnesses); to: Youth Group members who manned the snow cone and cotton candy machines; to: Mike and Aaron Dufresne who popped and distributed popcorn to predinner snackers; and to: Ed Anderson and Bruce Thieman for their help in running Split the Pot. Behind the great job of so many volunteers, the Saint Luke Boosters deserve a special thank you for the generous donation they make to defray the picnic costs at no expense to parishioners. Thank you too, to all who participated and had an enjoyable time. The 2015 picnic could not have been a success without all of the above. Anyone with a suggestion on making 2016 better than 2015 is asked to contact Deacon Gerry at gdupree@saintlukeparish.org. The Lord willing, look for next year s picnic on September 18 th. CHURCH NURSERY TEAM VACANCY TO BE FILLED: Saint Luke will begin a search to fill its paid nursery staff position. Position responsibilities include supervision and safety of small children during weekend Masses, and during scheduled day and evening parish activities. A candidate must be at least 18 years old and complete diocesan child safety training. The time commitment may vary, but averages 4-5 hours per week. If interested, please contact the parish office at , ext Parishioners are asked to remember the search effort in prayer. THE BOOK OF NAMES OF THE DEAD November is the time of harvest and the beginning of the earth s winter sleep. For centuries the Church has observed this month as a special time to pray for our dead. Again this year the parish Book of Names of the Dead will be at the Baptismal Font on November 1 st. Parishioners are invited to write the names of their deceased family members in the book. This book serves as a reminder and invitation to pray for the dead. At each Mass during the month of November we will pray for those whose names are inscribed in the book. Names of parishioners who were buried from St. Luke Church during the past year have already been placed in the book. You may enter names in the book anytime throughout the month of November. SOCIAL ACTION MINISTRY Christ has no hands or feet on earth but ours St Teresa of Avila FAIR TRADE COFFEE: Fair Trade coffee will be available for purchase this weekend after all Masses in Kramer Hall. The November sale of coffee and other Fair Trade food items will be available at our Bazaar the weekend of November 21 st -22 nd. CREATED FOR GIVING SALE: Created for Giving, the fundraising arm of our St. Luke Social Action Ministry, is featuring new fall and winter decor and women s accessories for sale after all Masses this weekend in Kramer Hall. Our beautiful quilted table toppers, wall hangings, and metal charm jewelry are made by parishioners and friends. A new shipment of Fair Trade crafts includes hand woven, hand painted silk scarves; hand tooled and dyed coin purses; stone and glass necklaces. Artists from developing countries who make our Fair Trade crafts receive a fair wage and produce items that respect their environment and craft traditions. Many community and international outreach efforts have been possible because of your past patronage. We help the hungry in Beavercreek and recently assisted partner artists in Nepal with funds to repair earthquake damage to their workshop. We and the people helped thank you for thinking of us first when shopping for gifts. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CONTINUES: This is a time of quiet prayer and intercession for the end of abortion.
