3 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 July 24, 2011 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Hey now, This past week I had the opportunity to get away from the heat for a few more days; however, it was not for a vacation this time. I spent the week at a seminar titled Toolbox for Pastoral Management. It is a program put together by Seton Hall University and is addressed to pastors, as they realized that the formation programs of most, if not all, seminaries are desperately lacking in this area. Unfortunately, you will have to wait to hear about what I learned as I am writing this bulletin article describing my adventure and return although I haven t even left yet. (You can blame deadlines for any confusion with that last statement.) However, while I was working away at this seminar, there is no doubt that the office will have been a busy place as well. Now truth be told I am not referring to our beloved staff members. I only say that as I have heard many references during the past few weeks to: cat s away, mice will play, happy hour lunches, and bonbon Wednesdays (one can only imagine what all that chocolate will do to one s desire to work). Yet there will have been a great deal of action as a number of workers descend upon the office to re-configure it s layout. This has become needed as it will enable all staff members to be housed in the same area. Hopefully, this will provide opportunities on an informal, and formal, level to do some teambuilding. This will be essential as there have been a number of changes in personnel within the last few months. Also, we, as church, are faced with changes that the new translation will bring to us this coming Advent season and together as a staff we will be able to envision how the liturgy here at the Parish of St. Benedict will continue to be one which nourishes, inspires and challenges us to bring about the Kingdom of God. On that note, I would like to share a bit of news that will hopefully provide comfort for some anxious people. We have recently added a youth minister to our faith formation team. His name is Patrick Mooney and he will be joining us in August. His presence here will allow a somewhat unique and hopefully fruitful relationship for our parish. While Patrick is working here part-time he will be continuing his work in children s ministry at St. Andrew the Apostle. He has assured me that even though his position is considered part-time he will devote the time and energy needed for youth ministry. This is evident in that he has served as a Diocesan Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Monterey in California, and he continues to be a consultant in this area for the Diocese of Orange (also in California). He has celebrated here a few times in the last few months and he remarked how welcoming and spirited this community is, so I hope when you are introduced to him we will continue to make him feel welcome. Thanks for allowing me to go off on that tangent, but there is a little bit of news regarding the changes to the offices that is exciting as well. The office area adjacent to our sacristy/kitchen will be converted as well. It will be divided in two parts and the part accessible directly from the worship space will be built up to become a permanent (OK permanent as long as we are in this building) reconciliation room. In the past the space set aside for the celebration of this sacrament of mercy and forgiveness has been taken down each week as the space was needed. To help inaugurate the space an invitation is given to all to go out and do your best sinning (or would that be worst?), so that you could not only come and see this space, but experience a truly powerful experience of love and compassion given to us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Well I am sure there is more information that I was supposed to bring you up-to-date on; however, the trip that I said I have made, but will be making as I haven t yet, has really drained me with jet lag, so I will save it for upcoming bulletins. No matter what awaits you in your journey this week always remember the beautiful prayer simply titled the Serenity Prayer. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. In Christ s Peace, Fr. Gary
4 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 July 24, 2011 Marriage Prep for Engaged Couples These classes are for couples where neither partner has previously been married. Topics include finances, intimacy, covenant, and communication. The entire one-day program must be completed to fulfill the requirements for the Married Life Skills Training, Step 3, of the marriage preparation program of the Diocese of Phoenix. Each couple will receive a certificate of completion. Each Marriage Preparation program will meet on one Saturday from 8:30 am-5:30 pm at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale. Saturday, September 10 Saturday, October 8 Saturday, November 12 Saturday, January 14 Program dates for 2011: Saturday, February 11 Saturday, March 10 Saturday, April 14 For more information, call Wendy at ext Register online: Fee per couple is $110 which includes lunch and workbook. Sacristan & Hospitality Minister Training There will be training for new sacristans and hospitality ministers on Saturday, August 13 at 3 pm. Sacristans work to ensure that the details in preparing for each liturgy are addressed and completed. The preparation begins in the sacristy as the sacristans set out the sacred vessels and organizes the various liturgical books. An important, yet somewhat time-consuming task, is the cutting of the bread that has been hand-baked by our parish families. After the liturgy, the sacristans will help to clean up and leave the sacristy in good order for the next group of ministers that will come in for the following liturgy. Hospitality Ministers conduct themselves in such a manner that makes all people, whether this is their first visit or onethousandth, that they are welcome and that they are an integral part of the Body of Christ. A Hospitality Minister is called to be a witness to God s Kingdom: by word and deed. All of us by our Baptism are called to be welcoming to all our sisters and brothers everyday wherever we go. Personal Discipleship: Taking Care of Our Mind, Body & Spirit "We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking." Richard Rohr Questions to ponder:` How does your life reflect living as a disciple? Planned Giving: What is a Bequest? What is a Personal Representative? A Bequest is a gift made through your Will. Personal Representative is a generic term used in some states to include both executors and administrators. For information on how to include St. Benedict in your will or trust please contact Suzanne at spercy@stbenedict.org or ext Do you keep your Discipleship in a Sunday-only box, or does it permeate your entire life, 7 days a week? How? How are you an example for your family? If you are interested in either one of these ministries and would like more information, contact Gail for sacristan information at or gailsbodyshop@wbhsi.net and Larry for hospitality information at or lrkraus@wbhsi.net. The Preface Dialogue Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. With this ancient dialogue we enter the Eucharistic Prayer, the heart of the Mass. These venerable words have been part of the Christian liturgy almost from the beginning by the time of Hippolytus of Rome (c. 215) they were already fixed in the liturgy. Several times during the Mass the priest has invited us to pray. There is something different here. We are invited to be lifted up, to ascend, to climb the Lord s mountain, as it were, to go to a new place for this most solemn part of the Mass. And we are invited to a new frame of mind, a sense of joy, of focused dedication: our hearts must not be cast down, but lifted up, and lifted to the Lord. Why? Because we are going to give thanks we are going to eucharist! It is right and just that we do this. Corinna Laughlin, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
5 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 July 24, 2011 Interested in Joining the Catholic Church? Have you been thinking about joining the Catholic Church? Have you been baptized in another Christian Tradition or have questions on what it would take to become Catholic? Inquiry, the first step in joining the Catholic Church gathers those interested to a place where they can find answers, and grow in their faith and spirituality. Entrance to the Inquiry process is open year round. When you are ready, we welcome you to join us on Sunday mornings from am twice each month. The next meeting will be in August. For more information please contact Diane at ext. 303 or dorban@stbenedict.org. National Natural Family Planning Week July 24-30, 2011 Celebrate your marriage! Learn more about Natural Family Planning (NFP) during National NFP Week. NFP is not the Rhythm Method. NFP is an umbrella term for modern, healthy, scientifically accurate, natural and reliable methods of family planning. When used correctly NFP is 99% effective in avoiding pregnancy, very helpful in achieving pregnancy, 100% safe and inexpensive. NFP helps build great marriages, helps parents in talking to their teens about chastity and sexuality, and it follows the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Did you know that the divorce rate among couples who use NFP, which requires periodic abstinence during the couple s fertile periods, is less than 5$? NFP couples know God s plan for marriage and spousal love. Their respect for this plan brings them greater intimacy, better communications, a more satisfying sexual life and much happiness. Just look at their low divorce rate! For more information about NFP, including class schedules, visit the Office of Natural Family Planning s website at or nfp_admin@diocesephoenix.org. Also, coming soon is the new C.A.L.L. program for teen chastity. Visit for more information about this new program.
